Thats the reason he was a 7th round pick. Many so called experts had him going early 2nd to 3rd. He has all the tools , but as already mentioned , hes a bit of a sicknote. And I agree that we should still draft/FA a few more WRs.

I am the only one who will probably say this but. Do not pay Coles, Im sorry I would rather trade him and get some value for him (can you say Redskins). He is old he is breaking down. I would rather start fresh than pay this guy more clearly coles has always taken hits from the horrible arm of chad he is hurt he will be breaking down very soon and hes not worth the value. I would try to trade him as soon as possible

There is a third way. Sit tight, let Coles sit out some or all of training camp and he'll turn up and play under his current contract. Coles will be happy to miss training camp, he'll still be getting millions and the Jets can look at renegotiating depending on how he does in the 2008 season. If he's healthy and productive give him a new deal, if not...

    This isn't true.

You're talking about two different things. Coles is a Pro Bowl caliber receiver and a guy who leads by example. He's an integral part of the offense, and he's still got some juice left. Kendall is an older guard with a reputation for undermining coaches(see- Arizona) and he was the leader of an offensive line that didn't do much good opening holes even when he was here. When you have a young coach, you can't have guys like Kendall undermining him in the locker room. I think they knew that Kendall or no Kendall, the team would struggle last season and that investing long term in an older guard in decline isn't the best move going forward. People act as if the guy played at a Pro Bowl level, and act as if he is solely responsible for the play of both Mangold and Ferguson. Those guys are first round picks who are supposed to step up and play well.

The media thoroughly dislikes Mangini because he's not Mr. Quotable Herm Edwards. I'd rather have a guy who can coach than a guy who can talk. The fact of the matter is, I think there is a lot of mutual respect between Coles and Mangini, and I think the idea that htey don't get along is overblown. It hink it's a tough love thing. I fully expect to see Coles on the Jets this season.

Agreed. He is not going to be worth that much on the free market with his age and concussions. He does not have the leverage that he had before. The only thing the Jets did wrong with Kendall is they did not have a plan B. If they had a plan B and Kendall knew this he would have had much less negotiation power. Coles is in a similar position. He knows we are thin at WR so he is going to try to take advantage. Now that he has showed his hand we need to make him replaceable. Once we do that we hold all the cards.

That's my feeling.... I've never seen a guy play hurt more times than this guy. Give him his $$$ and lets make it snappy.

If we were not to pay Coles, and this became an issue, what current player would have faith that this organization is going to take care of them.

It's not like we're the Pats that can win consistently, and can afford to lose players, we need to keep our heart and soul players.

It's obvious now that Tangini doesn't do right by their players. I totally believe Coles when they called him a team guy for sacrificing his production for the good of the team, then say they can't throw him more money cause his production is down. I totally believe that.

    QFT.

I realize it's a tough choice for Mangini and Tannenbaum because Coles is 30, has taken an absolute beating his whole career, and is starting to show wear and tear on his body.

BUT, this guy has given everything and then some on the field. During the seasons theres always a look of annoyance about how hard Mangini pushes the team, but you can also see he obviously has alot of respect for what Mangini is preaching. This team just wouldn't feel the same without Coles.

    I hope/expect a deal gets done.

i really dont think that this is that bad, either we pay and have a great reciever or when we dont want to pay him we can trade him and get value for him before it diminishes. If you want to show your team that you reward guys, pay Rhodes

Pay Coles, the guy is a warrior and is IMHO the best offensive player on the team. The Jets already lack any semblance of depth at WR; letting him go would make the Jets pathetic offense even worse.

Trade him for some value. We don't have a QB so there's no point in paying big money for a declining WR, while we look for one.

Coles is a 'warrior' and a very good player, but he wants to redo his deal every two years. Enough is enough. He's not Terrell Owens. He's not THAT good.

Coles is too banged up. Period. The Jets NEED to unload him this offseason before they commit more money and wind up with nothing. LC is one of my favorite players but his time as a Jet needs to come to an end. He knows it too, thats why he wants the payday. It is likely his last season.

As much as I like Cotchery and Stuckey, they're simply not #1 and #2 material yet. Cotchery is on his way, and shows improvements every year, but he still has a tendency to disappear in games. He's not a consistent go-to guy, who you can just bank on to make a play ala Chad Johnson, Moss, etc.

Stuckey showed flashes before getting injured, and I was really starting to buy the hype. Even still, he's a big ol' question mark and hasn't given enough to prove he's ready.

If Coles leaves, WR will be a huge weakness. Not something you'd especially want with a green QB still learning the ropes. This may put another dent in his progression, and with the lack of O-Line right now, it'd be the last thing the Jets need. Without giving him some support here, he's going to be ruined.

i think LC has proven his worth. he played hurt, most of the season, and always leaves it all on the field.he's a team leader,on a team where not to many stand up and take control. i think he deserves to retire a jet. that being said, i still think we need an upgrade at wr.

The way to handle it is to give Rhodes a big contract extension and take care of the key players. Coles called the GM a liar in the press two weeks after the season ended. By taking care of key players Coles cred is done. This is Coles standard operating procedure and nobody will take him seriously after this.
