change the thread title to "coles" signs one year "contract" with "jets" i hope we don't cut him after 4 games, if he's signing for the vet minimum what's the point? he's clearly better than clowney or smith and as a #4 WR he could do some damage (obviously not by putting up huge stats but pick up key first downs late in games)
I love how everyone hated on the idea when i first posted this topic before the thought of Coles returning to the Jets was just a random opinion. But now that hes signed everyones happy.
There should be a question mark at the end of you sentence. Its a good way to getting shit all over. But luckily I'm not in that mood, and I don't wanna throw the e-dick around like I'm someone important. And the funny part is that I wasn't talking about the punctuation. I was talking about the rambling thoughts that are stringed together by horrific sentence structure.
+1. NDmick, asking why was Coles in quotes did address punctuation. As for the ghastly sentence structure, now why you gotta go be do like that? If my previous (and conciliatory-in-tone) post wasn't enough, well then I don't know what to say other than it's not worth it (i.e. making an issue out of a tissue). Camp's open (finnally!) and this is nothing more than nit-picking, picayune bullshiate. Let's move on.
it's totally unnecessary and I can understand why some people might be against it. I know I wasn't that hot on the deal until after I saw that Coles was expecting to be cut after 4 games and still signed on. That shows a level of commitment that I didn't think he would still have.
There isn't much to be down on for this deal. He's coming in cheap and he's only staying until Santonio's suspension is up. If he performs well then he might stay longer. If he plays poorly than the Jets are right back where they started without him. There isn't much to lose here.
ESPN: Coles Retiring As A Jet CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Laveranues Coles wanted to retire a Jet. And he knows that might mean his career is over before the season ends. Rex Ryan was straight with the Coles when they discussed his return to the team that drafted him in 2000. Coles is going to compete for playing time when Santonio Holmes serves a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. After that, Coles could be cut. "I'm a realist," Coles said "I look at things the way it is. Of course they have a great core without me. The circumstances call for them to bring somebody else in like myself, a veteran guy, to try and help out while he's gone. "Coach Rex [Ryan] was straight forward and honest with me and said that it's something we'll deal with and approach when the time comes at four weeks when Santonio comes back. Of course it's always a probability of him saying, 'You're being released.' There's a probability of, 'Your role is being reduced.' There's a probability of a number of things. Just being straight forward and understanding the situation, it was great for me." Ryan said that Holmes was just too valuable a player to have any doubt that he'll be playing after his suspension ends. Despite Coles' history on the Jets, Ryan wasn't sentimental when discussing Coles' future. "He could get cut, he could make the Pro Bowl," Ryan said. "But I was upfront with him." Coles was twice a Jet, after he was drafted and after a three-year tenure as a Redskin ending in 2005. In 2008 he refused to speak publicly after his friend and quarterback Chad Pennington was cut for Brett Favre's arrival. Coles spent last season with the Bengals, where he had 43 catches for 514 yards. On Monday after the Jets first practice, Coles said he wasn't planning to get to play with quarterback Mark Sanchez quite yet, that he still needed to prove himself working with the second- and third-string offense. "And again I know right now we're thinking short term but while I am here I'm going to give my 110 percent, and trust me, it's going to be fun," Coles said. Coles said he wanted to end his career with the Jets, even if it was just by signing a one-day contract like Ike Hilliard and David Tyree did last week with the Giants. Now that he is here, Coles said he wouldn't look for another team when the Jets can't use him anymore. "This is the last hoorah, the boat stops here trust me," Coles said. When he heard from the Jets, Coles said the whole situation just seemed right to him. It seemed like it was a way to come home again. "I was walking back through these doors whether they wanted me or not." Jane McManus is a columnist for ESPNNewYork.com. Follow her on Twitter.
Coles needs to just be quiet and do his job and he will get a reduced role later on if things go well early on.
Love him as a player and I hope he plays well enough to force the Jets to keep him after week 4. If he can't do that he seems prepared to go gracefully into retirement. The situation seems perfect from every angle to me.
I think its great that Coles will make his last stand with the Jets. I think he will serve as a great fill in and occasional slot receiver. Coles still has terrific hands , but may be prone to concussion. I know its a one year deal , so lets hope he wants to walk away into the sunset a winner. May also shake things up around Jet camp for the younger guy's to step up or get packing.
I'm glad Coles is back with the team. I hope he contributes and is able to stick with the team throughout the season.
