I am assuming the coaching staff wants to see if Clowney can be a gunner. I don't know if they know yet who will fill Wallace Wright's role, but I would think Clowney will be in the mix. Whether he makes the team or not will depend on his special teams ability.
Looking at the current roster, the battle for the open gunner spot has to be between Marquice Cole, Donovan Warren, and David Clowney.
I have no problem with this move. Clowney is unproven, and without ST value, he's got to show the FO he can be a starting receiver one day. If Coles has something left, he's probably better in the short-term. If not, we can cut one of them after week 4. In terms of a pure receiving competition, I think Clowney has a chance against Coles given a fair chance.
Great move upgrading WR #4 and WR #3 for those all important first 4 games against Baltimore and our division.
if Coles stays healthy....i love this move. If his head explodes like a grape at some point from the start of TC to week 5......not so much.
If that happens, we're right back to where we were yesterday...so it shouldn't be that big of a deal if he gets hurt.
Agreed. I feel a little better about his health only because he doesn't have Chad Pennington lobbing the ball to him and leaving him open to a free shot from defenders. Coles can step in for Holmes for the first few games and then be quality depth in case of an injury to a WR. It's not like we need him to catch 60 passes or anything.
