It's a joke. He is #3 on the depth chart behind Kerley and Nelson. The guy never made any plays in Miami and couldn't stick on a roster whose #1 WR was Brian Hartline. Idzik underwhelmed me this offseason in FA and in the draft, given all the picks we had this year. In general, I'd rather underspend and play it conservatively than reach and overpay for guys. But the additional draft picks mean nothing if you can't convert them into good players. I have some faith Saunders can be a good punt returner and that hopefully they can sprinkle in Jacoby Ford on some end-arounds and gadget plays. But beyond that, the mid-round rookie WRs with zero upside Idzik drafted are all jumbled in the "other" category below the 3rd stringers. Basically, except for Decker, we are going to war with the same group of receivers as last year.
I think the simple answer is. Until someone proves themselves better or someone better is signed, Gates is in the same position this year as last... the best available option on the team. It costs us little to keep him around for a while longer, if he turns things around its a bonus, if not, he's done.
I feel like we have a lot of bodies at WR I'm not sure id call it depth.None of these guys have proven anything yet.Decker Kerley and Nelson are the only legit options as of right now until someone steps up .Hill and Gates and the rest of the rookies are question marks
I believe he's number 6 on the depth chart... 1s Decker, Kerley 2s Hill, Nelson 3s Salas, Gates 4s Ford, Saunders, Evans, Hakim, Enunwa, Cmapbell
he's only ahead of the rookies and other camp bodies, not that surprising at this point. I'd be shocked if made the team. salas? sure. gates? no… some other rookie will take his place unless he's just a balls out special teamer or something.
Don't be mistaken. I don't want Clyde Gates on this team...just citing examples of his nice performance in camp which justifies him being around. Absolutely hopes someone other than him makes the team.
