I think initially were going to have to let clowney eat before he starts getting that respect you speak of.. Nobody is going to be frightened by him as a decoy at first but if we air the ball out a couple times to him.. Your def right
This is all I've found from the Post that would be even close to what you are talking about: On Monday, RB Jesse Chatman, who missed the first four games because of a banned substance use suspension, sounded certain he'd be in uniform for the next game, a week from Sunday against the Bengals. Not so fast, according to Mangini. "He has to come back, he has to show that he's in shape, he has to show he can contribute, he has to contribute on special teams," Mangini said. If that's what you meant, I don't consider it 'iffy', I just consider it cautious.
Having watched Clowney in the 2007 Packers preseason games, I'm concerned you guys are expecting too much here. He was very fast I recall, but he dropped a lot of balls, not good hands. Maybe he's improved since the Jets got him, so take my words with a grain of salt. FYI here's an old article on Clowney the Packer if any are interested: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=599462
You know, I don't think who is 1st, 2nd, or 3rd wideout is very important. What's interesting is how Clowney will fit in to the empty backfield two minute drill with Brett calling the plays to find the open receiver. If Clowney is on the field there is another speed dimension that will eff up the safeties and pre-occupy one shut-down CB. Clowney is a dangerous weapon in that spread-out, all-out that was a favorite tactic of Vinnie T. With Clowney, Stuckey, Cotch, Coles, and Keller up there on the line, the NYJs have the OL strength to run those DBs into the ground, get them to stumble (a la the Cowboys' No. 41 this weekend), and force them into confusion.
We're hoping he can come in as a 4th receiver and stretch the field. We're not asking him to be our #1 receiver. I don't remember him dropping a single ball in preseason.
Yeah, could be my memories/impressions are influenced by my "Whoa! What a find!" reaction to James Jones, almost any other WR rookie would seem to pale next to that.
Yeah where has he been this season, has he been injured? I don't remember seeing too much of him so far.
Yeah it seems like every week a few receivers stand out, and the others don't even get a catch...and then it will switch the next week
If Keller, Stuckey and Clowney all keep progressing like they have this season / preseason, the Jets will have a dangerous a receiving corps. Maybe not with the star power of a TO or Larry Fitzgerald but a legitimate threat at all 5 positions. Which is more than most teams can say.
