I actually like the Houston/Leon combo. I still think a big part of why they aren't anything more then average yardage wise is the offensive line. Clement is average at best, Moore is nothing special and Kendall really doesn't have the size to move a fat dl out of the way. He's great on counters and things where he is coming at an angle. And brick just needs to gain weight. They are an undersized, average unit at best because of good coaching. I would like to see Leon and Houston with really good guards and Brick and Mangold with a year under their belt.
I don't want Portis here. However, you have to be brain dead to think Portis is not as good as Washington/Houston. Those 2 couldn't carry Portis' jock
Sorry, but I don't think you've been paying attention this year. Portis does not fit the mold of the player Tangini wants on this team. He is a player with lots of talent, but is selfish and has no heart. I think we need a RB, but Portis is not the guy.
i cant believe people are saying no to Portis..he is a proven playmaker who can break a long one. Plus he is a hard worker and wants to win. Look at the Redskins record when he is playing vs when he is not. Id take him if we had the chance.
You hit on the reason. He doesn't last a full season healthy. At least lately, that's true. He runs well with the zone blocking, but even though he still does well, he doesn't adjust well to the non-zone blocking scheme.
I would agree that the offensive line needs to be upgraded, specifically in the run blocking department, but I still think the Washington/Houston combo would be nothing more than above average even with a better OL. No reason to settle for being just "above average" when we should be trying to be great. Portis is a very good RB, but no way you give up a 1st for him. Depending on what holes we fill in FA, a possible trade down from our 1st round pick for extra picks, and other factors, I might give up a 2nd for him. He'll have just turned 26 entering next season (granted with a little more wear on the tires than your usual 26 year old RB), and I don't think his injury history is something that should prevent you from acquiring him for a fair price. Portis + upgrade on the right side of the OL would be HUGE for our 2007 offense.
Not happening. They gave up Champ Bailey and multiple first rounders for Portis. No chance they take a 2nd rounder for him.
You said we needed a running back in the first round. When essentially it made no sense without having the line to protect him. Now that we have a line, we just need a franchise running back to make the plays. While I love Houston and Washington, they are in no way the answer. Washington is great for blocking or receiving out of the backfield.
I thought we desperately needed a rb this year and we still need a runningback. Washington and Houston are good backups and good change of pace backs. However they are no game breakers and Id definitely go for a running back in the 1st round.
His first 2 seasons he played in Denver so i think those stats are worthless. Every RB in Denver puts up great numbers. If you look at what he did in Washington with a great O-Line and great WR's im not too impressed with him. Barely 4 yards per carry, that's average at best.
I wouldn't give up a 1st or 2nd round pick. Not that I don't think he's worth it, I just don't want to give up the picks. You build and sustain a good organization through the draft. I don't believe you need a great RB to win in the nfl. You need a great line and a solid rb who can block, catch and hit the hole. Let's face it if you put Tomlinson behind a bad line he wouldn't be anywhere near what he is today and if you put cedric houston behind a great blocking line he would have a decent nfl running back. My point is that unless there is a running back that the jets really feel has that type of high end value it's not worth taking early. You can always find a running back it's much harder to find a great offensive lineman or a great qb.
He's also not a very good fit for Gibbs' power system. I would say, in a system like ours (with improved blocking), he would be in-between his Denver and Washington production (4.5+ YPC, 10-12 TDs).
The only reason I would trade a 2nd for him is because we have two this year. In a regular year, I might not.
Which would be the worse idea: trading for an injury prone veteran (Portis) or drafting an injury prone rookie (Peterson)?
This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! describes more real life. Anyway why would we like to rehab a back that will be very expensive? he suffered a broken hand and some weeks ago he underwent shoulder surgery. Too risky.
Great minds think alike. I was thinking the same thing, but I'd rather try to get another back late in the draft like we did with Leon than give away a high pick. TBTF
Gibbs loves Portis, no chance they give him up. And if they do, Id love to get Portis. Hes one of my favorite players in the league not for what he does off the field but for the burst he has from the line. But as someone said, he signed a monster contract like a year ago, so I doubt that will work for him to come here.
