By the way, I give Cimini a lot of shit on this board, but he finally proved me wrong and presented both sides of the argument.
Agreed. Football front offices don't promise fringe or average players anything. What if the Jets drafted a guard in last year's draft and he outperformed Kendall????
ok so it doesnt happen, but why then have 3 guys in the last 9 months claimed that it DID happen? why after the first one was dealt with so harshly would 2 others come out and say basically the same thing. that the fo promised me they would rework or look at my deal? you guys can kill the players all you want but it is becoming something that is happening WAY TOO OFTEN. i unlike most really doubt that they didnt say that they would re look at his contract. thing is they probably did re look at it and determined that he didnt deserve jack, just like the did with the other 2. now are they doing something wrong well maybe not but it appears they are misleading some of the players on this team. and that is bad juju
I'm not blaming the players as much, although they factor into it largely. I am mostly blaming the agents. Two of the players you mention share a pair of agents. I can't vouch for why Coles spoke out, but he got his extension... the agents for Kendall and Baker are the same agents that advised Revis to hold out almost through his entire rookie training camp over an extra contract year. In this situation, the red flags are above the agents in my mind. I'm also not going to sit here and say the FO/CS have clean hands in the situation, because it's a 2-way street. I didn't like the way they publicly handled the Kendall situation at all. I think the rookie dorm shit was bush, and they didn't prepare for that situation. They would be ill-advised to continue treating players like that in the future, because then you lose the locker room.
I think this is the most interesting part. How often do we see agents and other players provide all this BS that goes around. I like Baker and I think he has the making to be a great TE because he does make some of the most amazing catches at the right times but based on this article he really does need to keep his mouth shut about everything...
I doubt that a leopard will change their spots. If baker demanded a trade, he obviously doesnt want to play for them- and that's not a surprise.
Where are all the 'the front office lied to Baker, Baker is right to be upset' crowd now??? Where are the whiny 'he's ONLY making 650K this year, he deserves more money' people? Finally, a good article on the subject. I almost didn't even read it, because Cimini is a tool.
Agents work for the players, so you have to blame the player FIRST and most. Coles did NOT get an extension, he got his current contract guaranteed. Something the Jets' FO offered to do BEFORE he becasme a whiny bitch about it. Kendall was the ass that instigated the whole thing last year. Who do you think this insider was referring to when he said "certain locker-room lawyer players"??? He made up crap and deserved to be treated like crap. I agree that the Jets were not prepared with a solid back up G, but who knew Kendall was going to pull that stuff? I want the Jets to continue to treat malcontents with multiple years left on there deal exactly this way. If you deserve a new contract, you'll get one. Look at Rhodes and Moore.
Cimini would NEVER have written such an article. It was send in by someone else and he just passed it along.... Cimini sucks.
I sent him a diatribe on how he needed to do better re-search on his articles if he wanted to be considered as a serious beat writer for the Jets, and also told him that he should be working for free since everything he writes sucks and 12 year olds could write better drivel.
Over the years, Cimini has selectively chosen to present a distinctly anti-Jets slant on most of his articles. I never said he wrote it, but by printing it in his column he is presenting the other side of the argument.
Why do the players do it? Because if they are unhappy with their contracts and whine about it, they usually get traded. That's why. Players like TO and Keyshawn Johnson taught players a lesson. Complain about your contract and you either get paid or traded. Kendall acted like an idiot and a malcontent and a cancer for one reason - to force a trade. The only other choices the player has is to hold out and not get paid or to play. People are too quick to blame the FO. Baker can read the handwriting on the wall. He is not getting a big contract and he is on the brink of losing his job. He is trying to force his way out of NY now. Kendall handled his situation horribly and gave the Jets no choice but to get rid of him. Coles did not get a contract, only more guaranteed money. That's why fans should support what the Bengals are doing with Chad Johnson. Players should honor their contracts and the decisions they make. They should get away with trashing their team and teammates to force a trade. It is bad for their teams and bad for the fans and the league.
yeah, but don't agents get a cut of the player's salary that they're representing? if so, it's in the agent's best interest to urge the player to demand more money.
yeah, i agree that's something to think about and maybe even eventually fret over. however, if Revis really improves his play from last year - which was solid - and becomes one of the best CB's in the league, maybe he'll deserve that money. i guess it's hard to diagnose that because the Front 7 is so crucial; it's almost like we won't know if Revis actually becomes a better player because of his overall skill or if the much-improved Front 7 (if they fit the bill) makes him a better player.
What Revis is going to get, if I am correct about how good he's going to get, is the richest CB contract in the history of the league. At least, until another elite CB signs a deal the following year. It happens every time. And I am not bothered by that. What I'm bothered by is his agents advising him to hold out in a year we are going to make a run. Edit: Hell, imagine this scenario... the Jets pull a surprising 11 wins in 2008 and Revis, with a bunch of monsters wreaking havoc in the trenches, gets 15 INTs and 15 PDs and racks up a good number of tackles and become the flavor of the year in the Pro Bowl. And then, at the end of the 2008 season, he does an unprecedented thing by holding out 2 years into a 6 year deal, as advised by his agents, because he isn't getting elite CB pay. This is the stuff I can imagine with a Jets player.
yeah, totally. so i guess the question becomes: if Revis greatly benefits from the Front 7 - again, if it's really more the Front 7 creating INT's - then does he become expendable because you can put another CB back there who can produce due to the Front 7? i hate to overanalyze a scenario like this so early, but it's a definitely possibility that could be looming. i really don't know if this FO would be the type willing to acquiesce to his demands, or if they believe they can plug in someone else if that time comes. that's what i meant by having to determine if it's Revis' skill that's at the crux of it or the Front 7.
I get where you're going and I am not saying at all that stats like that would be creditied in my mind to the front 7. I think Revis is an amazing young talent and something like the stats I put in my scenario could only be achieved by an elite CB. On the other side of that, I would never want to give up a guy like Revis. I would have the same justified nightmares I had when we sacrificed Aaron Glenn for Bill Parcells' stupidity with the Jets salary cap. A lock-down corner is hard to find, a guy whose abilities has a psychological effect on the QB of the other team. I was in awe in week 1 when Brady went away from Revis so often. The kid had barely worn a Jets jersey. I hate Brady, but the guy has great instincts and if he didn't feel comfortable throwing at this guy, then there's something he saw. If this kid can stay healthy, and stay wearing green and white, we will retire his jersey someday. You don't let go of talent like that. No matter the factors that contribute to his success.
This is the biggest thing I hate about football. I think this should not be allowed to happen. The same thing could happen with Harris since he might be even better than Revis and only got a 2nd round contract. A player's contract is based on how well he is expected to play. If a player plays worse than he was expected to play, the team is stuck with the contract and most times have already payed a big signing bonus. If players are not going to honor their contracts maybe they should be done away with and you get paid based on how many games you play and how well you play at the end of each game and season without an upfront contract. This way, if you play poorly, you get paid poorly. If you are a late rounder and play well, you get payed according to how well you played. But of course, the players and agents wouldn't want that and it will never happen.
It's hard to be a pro-Jets writer because all of the evidence that accumulates over time suggests that the Jets are a franchise run by tools who are clueless about how to win anything worthwhile. This has been true for all but a handful of years that the Jets have been in existence and even the upticks, like the Parcells era, end woefully after a few seasons. Steve Serby, Rich Cimini, same thing, smart writers who eventually burn out and start writing pissed off soap opera crap because it's more entertaining than covering a team that is on auto-pilot to the bottom of the pack most of the time. Dr. Z. was the smartest Jet's writer of all time: he abandoned ship for a better job as soon as he got the opportunity. Most of the Jet's beat writers see the team as a stepping stone to the real job in NY football writing: covering the Giants.
