Fair point, so I'm not done with you after all. Watson and Carr look pretty good. Culpepper, Vick and Testaverde were also good. And Marino and McNair played in the past 20 years. The other thing is the sample size of QBs with a <=20 Wonderlic is small, so there won't be too many good ones because of that.
Something to keep in mind: the last (only) time the Jets were in a SB, that team was built from the QB out - they drafted FOUR of them because Weeb and Werblin knew how important the QB was to establishing the identity of the team. When you're starting "from scratch" as the Jets essentially are, it makes the most sense to start with the QB and then add the complementary players ans system to match.
Watson I just don't know what his future is. So much he does with his legs (and QB's also generate power through their lower bodies when throwing) and his throwing arm wasn't strong to begin with. And his sample size is still tiny. Marino I think blew most of the test off or didn't' finish. Carr I'm not sold on ever being a great QB, but he'll be a gutsy good QB throughout his career. So I can chalk him up as a low wonderlic success. Vick I never liked. Too gimmicky and good D coordinators always seemed to find a way to corral and limit him. His career was more good than bad though. Shame he didn't learn to be a better pocket passer with that amazing arm and tight spirals he threw (effortlessly)
Don't make excuses for the fact that a player with a "low" wonderlic score CAN have a good NFL career. The, "I don't like this player", "hes too gimmicky" puts nothing in your favor bud. There is barely any correlation between the two. Facts are facts.
Looks like Cimini is backtracking, per an article tonight “Allen, Darnold and Rosen have the kind of arm talent that makes scouts swoon, but don't dismiss Mayfield from the conversation. There's Mayfield/Jets buzz in the scouting community, enough to make me believe he's still in play with the third pick. This surprises me. As an undersized quarterback from a spread system, he doesn't seem to fit the Maccagnan profile of a classic pocket passer. But Mayfield is a winner with rare accuracy, and he has impressed the Jets' brass in their meetings“ Also, a quote from Christopher Johnson tonight: “I’m 100% sure that that pick at 3 will be exciting and fans are going to like it” Hmm, who does that sound like?
Also, reading between the lines a little, doesn’t that Johnson quote seem to suggest Allen isn’t in play? It’s pretty well vocalized that the majority of the fan base is against selecting Allen. The Jets twitter and Facebook comments are inundated with anti-Allen pleas haha
Cimini lol. I saw that on SNY just now with Johnson. I was hoping to see him say something about Suh. Vacchiano was trying to bait him into saying the pick would be QB. I didn't get anything out of it except it will be a QB, obviously. They gotta like at least three of them, and they are without question excited themselves. Gonna be nuts that night if we don't get any leaks. The only thing I ask is that the Fucking Johnson's stay the fuck out of football decisions
Low wonderlic guys can have good careers at other positions QB is an entirely different animal. Tough to win with a dumb QB
I have a question for you guys regarding the Wonderlic test- you can study for this test, correct? Maybe the exact questions are different from year to year but there are samples out there and wouldn't it be conceivable that an agent could get a copy of the previous year's test for their client to study and practice? if that's the case and it's possible to study, then doesn't a BAD score indicate the player is lazy more than anything about smarts? They couldn't bother taking a little bit of time to study so they wouldn't have an embarrassing score. To me that is the most important thing to come out of that silly test than anything about people's smarts - - (only if its possible to study for it of course)
The test Mayfield got the 2nd highest all time score on wasn’t the Wonderlic, it was some athlete intelligence test designed to replace the Wonderlic
