the second link is what i was referring to. but then i find this link:
    nyj.scout.com/2/710650.html

which was written on 12/12/07 that says he just signed an extension. hence my confusion. if he just signed an extension in december, then i say underpaid or not he should just shut up. if he hasnt signed anything recently, then he may have a point...

Then I am guessing his gripe is how much money hes getting front or backloaded or if its an incentive based deal or what not.

I hate to see this, as I'm a big fan of Baker.

Hopefully both resolve the issues at hand and he heads back to the off-season work outs. He had his best season last year, it'll be great if he can contribute again, because I know he can if the ball is thrown to him.

well, i guess my point is if you signed a piece of paper four months ago, you have no basis for asking for a new contract. if youre unhappy, well you screwed up but they signed you four months ago! and i like baker, and hope he stays here but if this is true, i hope the jets dont give him another cent.

So based on your theory, Mangini should be the one that's pissed, the players work 'under' him and they make WAY more than him. Besides, it happens all the time in the working world. What doesn't happen in the 'real' world is very few of us have guaranteed money in the millions coming in. I agree, human nature is going to make a person feel slighted by somebody else making more money, but Chris Baker chose a profession that everybody's salary is going to be public knowledge. I'm sure at some point he had a contract that was more than somebody else playing in the league that he wasn't better than.

He signed the deal. Exceed expectations for the next 2 years and he will be rewarded accordingly.

And I really don't want to hear anymore about Franks making more than Baker.

Bubbas deal includes his signing bonus, and is an apples to oranges comparison.

Put as plainly as possible, Baker is working on a 4 year 6.6 million contract. Gee, I wonder what that works out to per year. Hold on, let me grab Bubba's deal. Oh yup, rocket science.

Stupid fucking agents need to be monkey raped.

okay - let's talk reality here. if Baker sits for a year/is released/traded etc...

who steps in and fills his shoes. I have heard comments that make it seem as if Baker can be easily replaced. As if he is a bum off of the street and we can just slot another bum off of the street to take his place? This is a foolish thought process. Franks is no better than a backup at this point and after doing some reading up on him - a very below average blocker.

it's really easy to say I don't want him here anymore or let him sit. it's not so easy to name a replacement.

I don't think he is a bum, I think he's a really talented guy who is under-used, but if we're going to continue to utilize TEs in the same fashion then Franks would fill his shoes easily. I don't know what Schott is thinking, but we never use TEs and haven't even from Hackett's days. I thought that would change when they stuck Clemens in, but it didn't.

    Baker's contract info from Rotoworld.

Looks like he signed an extension in November of 2007, six months ago. Looks like he got about $3.8 mill last year. Probably most of it as a signing bonus. I wonder why people don't seem to count that when looking at his so called 2008 salary....

Anyway, I say trade him for Shockey! :topper:

Wow this is hilarious.. The guy is requesting a trade? Does he realize no team wanted him when he was a FA yet he thinks now someone is willing to trade for him?

We will probably draft one late and then just cut him. See how he likes unemployment.

I'd say grant him his wishes. With a catch, though; once he seeks out a trade from other team, whether he gets a job or not, he's not coming back to NY.

I still don't get it, if Baker signed a deal on December 12, why was he saying I want an extension 2 weeks later on Jan. 1 so that I can remain a Jet for life. And I know the second piece of information is right because I remember it at the time, and we all discussed it, and said that he comes third behind Rhodes and Coles... But I really don't remember the extension taking place, I mean obviously it had to have happened otherwise half of us wouldnt remember it and their wouldn't be links about it...

but really 2 weeks from deal to deal? thats wild. Also I think this needs to be fixed soon, because we really don't have anybody else who could step in and fill Bakers shoes. I don't trust drafted tight ends to produce in their rookie year or there second year for that matter, we got a steal in Baker who we got in round 3 and he has produced well for us. We should probably keep him happy so that we can somehow have an offense with some kind of consistency. Clemens has been working with Coles Cotchery and Baker for 2years, so he needs to feel comfortable with something in the passing game, and they say the Tight End is a young QB's best friend....

    From rotoworld.com

Jets signed TE Chris Baker to a three-year, $5.4 million contract extension.

The restructuring actually took place last month. Baker had $800,000 in "new money" added to the deal he signed in March 2006, and this year’s pay upped from $850,000 to $2.37 million. Baker has had a strange run under Eric Mangini, sometimes seeming to be in the doghouse, but the underutilized former third-round pick appears committed to the regime.

So he had more money added 6 months ago but now its not good enough?

If he or his agent had any brains he would have played this year out. With a much improved line and less need for him to stay in and help block he would have the chance to have his best year ever, since the stick is not set too high as it is.

He could have had alot more bargaining power and a better chance of getting what he wants.

That's bullshit...He signed a 5.4 million contract in November of 2007. That means he's averaging 1.8 million per year, not what the article says. Just because he got the money in the form of a bonus and not as "salary" proper for cap reasons, doesn't mean he is actually getting less than Bubba for his services. The reality is that he is making .15 million more than him and has never been to a Pro Bowl.
