Because when you are over 30 years old and not getting better and you sign a contract two years ago and take a signing bonus, you don't renegotiate with 2 years left on the deal and you don't go whining to the press about how unfairly you are being treated. The Jets took Kendall off the scrap heap and gave him a second chance and decent money. He is not worth the money or the effort in dealing with him unless he shuts up and plays.
I think he's been a very solid runner for us... I really hope he sticks as the 3rd RB... Why is there any hate? Anyway, I hope it's nothing serious and I'm sure he'll be back soon.
I hope it is not due to his illness. Back off him some of you guys. Some people blasted Chad last year when he took time off for his sick father.
My first thought was about his thyroid condition as well; but seeing how it's "personal" reasons as opposed to injury concerns, I suppose that isn't the case. Whatever the reason, I hope he doesn't miss too much time. He has a legitimate shot, along with lil' Leon, to battle it out for the #2 spot.
According to the NY Post, it doesn't sound like Houston is coming back. http://www.nypost.com/seven/0727200...for_personal_reasons_jets_mark_cannizzaro.htm BACKUP RB HOUSTON LEAVES JETS FOR PERSONAL REASONS By MARK CANNIZZARO July 27, 2007 -- On a day that Curtis Martin said his official goodbye to the NFL, the Jets also lost running back Cedric Houston, who left the team for undisclosed personal reasons yesterday. Barring an 11th-hour change, the Jets, too, will begin today?s first training-camp practices (8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.) without their top draft pick, cornerback Darrelle Revis. As of last night, Revis was still not signed to a contract. The former Pittsburgh star defensive player is said to be seeking a five-year deal, and the Jets are believed to be insisting on him signing a six-year deal, which makes more economic sense to them. Should Revis not be in this morning?s practice, it will mark the first time since 1997 that the Jets have had a rookie holdout because of a contract dispute. Former Jets linebacker James Farrior, who now plays with the Steelers, was a contract holdout, the only one since Mike Tannenbaum came to the Jets in 1997. One player who will be at practice today is disgruntled left guard Pete Kendall, who?s dissatisfied with his $1.7 million salary and has been very publicly vocal about his displeasure. It was widely speculated that Kendall would hold out, but he would be subjected to a possible $14,000 fine per day missing if he decided to stay away. In other news, the Jets yesterday signed free agent wide receiver Chris Davis, a 5-10, 180-pounder out of Wake Forest, where he caught 62 passes for 721 receiving yards and four touchdowns in four seasons. The quitting from the team by Houston is curious considering he?d been somewhat productive in his two seasons with the Jets. Houston rushed for 374 yards and five touchdowns with a 3.3-yard average last season. His role, though, was certain to be diminished this year with the addition of Thomas Jones and the emergence of Leon Washington last year. Houston was a sixth-round draft pick in 2005. He rushed for 676 yards and seven touchdowns and gained 109 receiving yards on 15 catches in two seasons with the team. The fact that his name already has been eliminated from the roster on the team?s web site is a sure sign that Houston is not returning to the team. mark.cannizzaro@nypost.com
I just hope the Jets don't become too stingy with their contract negotiations. I understand getting players for the right value but at the same time if they alienate all their players then this team won't have any consistency in the future, and will suffer.
He can go hang out with Montansante Pope. Very disappointed in ced. Now we are in big trouble if Jones or Leon goes down.
ya, there was a lot of speculation going on out there, including: I don't know what to make of it. Houston always struck me as a true-blue football player, I can't believe he's lost his desire. Well, we'll see, I hope he comes back at some point. Maybe they just worded it that way so they could sign someone else in the meantime. Lil' tryout so to speak. Maybe?
Maybe it's the kind of thing where the team told him that they were going in a different direction, that his playing time would be next to nil, and that he should consider looking elsewhere for another opportunity. I could definitely see this guy backing up somewhere in a #2 role- he was pretty damm solid for us last year behind a less than stellar line. Alot of folks are quick to say that "he sucked" mainly because he didn't have the highlight reel that Washington did, with killer cuts etc- Houston was more of a punishing straight-ahead runner. Here's to hoping that the guy isn't seriously ill again and that he finds another opportunity somewhere else.
Damn, I was hoping he was just taking some time off and coming back after he dealt with whatever he had going on. I certainly didn't mind him at our no.3 spot, but I guess we just have to move forward and find some bruiser who can fill that void.
I don't want to start speaking poorly of him before we get the real story, but here's a little speculation. What if he got popped internally for steroids? Perhaps the team told him they don't want to deal with it? I know, it's wrong to start talking without any story, but it is very strange that he's been removed from the roster. If he were leaving due to his thyroid, with any chance of regulating the problem again, there'd be no reason to remove him from the roster. Very strange. I hope for his sake that everything in his life is okay. But if this is because he douched out on the team for some reason, let him rot.
Damn, I had high hopes for the guy...he was a great backup...but not that much of a loss with Neon Jones in the mix...I hope he's OK...Our depth really just took a hit and we won't miss him unless we need him. Where's *cough* Michael Bush when you need him?
well we had a guy last year that decided to quit on us when training camp started, i dont remeber who it was but i think it was a DT who we had high hopes for. it happens.
Wow, that is very strange, I hope things are okay with him. I guess now Danny Ware will get a good look. He's an interesting prospect, but I don't think he is ready for a role on this team. We will see, otherwise I'm sure they'll be scouring the waiver wire for a backup....
My newspaper, the Star-Ledger, said that, "According to someone close to Houston, 'Football isn't a priority in Houston's life right now. He wants to take a couple of steps back and decide what he wants to do with his life.'" This doesn't sound like something minor, "deciding what you want to do with your life." Sounds like something pretty serious going on.
You're right- guys don't just walk away from an NFL career because they've yet to decide "What they want to be when they grow up."
