It is going to be pretty interesting to see all the FO homers who lauded Idzik for not "over paying" for a free agent CB jumping for joy when he does just that next year for what will likely be an inferior player based on the potential available CBs. Guys can of course get cut so maybe someone good pops up but it's still going to be funny when we sign someone to a bigger contract than we could have signed someone to this year and watch the reaction. That or we end up using another high pick, maybe our first, on a CB AGAIN which will make it harder to address our other areas of need.
fans want to overpay every name, to overpay a bit for the right player is the important part. I think we did that w/ Decker but I think he will be worth it. Rodgers-Cromartie? are you serious? fans wanted any name CB and wanted to overpay.
Rex must have missed the memo that Allen was not "a quality starter" and was "just pretty good" in coverage.
Seth Walder@SethWalderNYDN 1m CB Antonio Allen now picks off Vick. Second of the day. #nyj Cortland West, NY
Apparently, Allen missed the memo too. Still not convinced Pryor has the NFL caliber range to be more than just effective FS but if I'm wrong and he does or we find someone else on or off our roster with does, our base package will have so much flexibility against the likes of NE who try to cause matchup problems by not allowing you time to make substitutions to match their personnel. We can just stay in base in situations we would normally have to switch to nickel.
I think at this point Allen has proven that he more than just "solid" at man coverage especially for his position. Most SS can't play man at all. The plight of a 7th round pick; it's a constant uphill battle.
Funny but in an indirect way losing Milliner/McD & Ivory/Powell may have more of an effect on Geno/Vick. Rex is counting on a STRONG defense and STRONG running game to give Geno some much needed breathing room to develop, win some games, and keep the season within reach. Geno won't need to pass for 300+ yards and score 35 pts every game. He can hand off for a buck 50 and let his defense keep the game close enough (20 pts or less). Perfect recipe for a developing QB. Has any of that changed with the injuries to the secondary and running game? I know none of the injuries are season ending but it's cause for thought. If the face of our team changes dramatically through injury (ie, Defense and Running Game) and Rex finds he NEEDS a QB to put up lots of points and lots of yards to even have a chance, would he still stick with Geno?
I'm hearing we are after Asante Samuel?? Just found this as well - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/..._medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=new-york-jets
Antonio Allen is the best DB in all of football! bahahahaha if this whole DB shit wasn't so funny it'd be sad.
i know, it is a joke. but Rex's hands are tied. he was on thin ice before Idzik was hired. he's been in self-preservation mode the last 2 years. as badly as he wanted Revis or whoever, he's not gonna call out his GM. it almost makes me wish Tannenbaum was still the guy. Brett Favre, Braylon Edwards trade, what we got out of Santonio Holmes the 1st year. the guy was unafraid to make bold moves when he saw a need or opporutnity. he wasn't always right, but now we've got something like the polar opposite, a guy who is so slow on the draw that by that time he's figured out what the "best" decision is, the window on making whatever decision is already closed so that it doesn't matter anyway. this approach, combined with an insulting "lowball-offer or nothing" attitude in negotiations, is the only way to explain ending up with dmitri patterson, a guy who's been on 7 teams in 8 years (the definition of a journeyman), as one of your starting CBs on a team that is supposed to contend for a playoff berth.
AA has played the nickel before when we either were stuck or elected to stay in base personnel against 3 wide WRs. Rex did it a lot purposely last preseason especially in that Giants game. Whether not it can work on a consistent basis is a whole different story though. Note AA has also played on the outside when the TE is stretched out wide but not against WRs.
