Let's see how Izzy performs under fire. This is IZZY TIME! Even before the injuries I firmly believe Izzy was planning on adding at least one Vet DB during camp cuts. Teams wait until they see how their young guns step up during training camp before releasing their high priced Vets, be it it O-Lineman, DB, whatever. Idzik will have around 5 decent DBs to choose from. The injuries to his own guys may up the significance and force Idzik into a trade to get the guy he wants, vs waiting for cuts and fighting with other teams. But that's about it. The Giants have a glut of DBs......hmmmm. McDougie was never going to start, so meh. Patterson has the worst game of the season out of the way and will play better in the coming weeks, relaxing fears on him. Injuries definitely suck but Idzik has plenty of time to restock the liquor bar.
Trade for who?that's my question. Its not like solid starting corners are thrown on the trading block every day.We had our chance to get a solid corner with the most cap space we had in years and the best Idzik did was Patterson.I wish we would have shown more intrest in Flowers when the Cheifs cut him
Patterson has missed practice with ankle issues the last few days as well according to the daily news,Idzik needs to pick up his phone
Pick a vet DB who's being pushed by youngsters and at risk of being waived. Which is pretty much all of them.
"IZZY" should have taken care of this 5 months ago ,there's not much he can do now. He's the one who signed Patterson, drafted Millner and Mcdougle and technically traded Revis, and could have resigned him instead of letting him end up in a Patriots locker room
It's an issue of depth, if you have depth you don't have to worry as much about injuries. Even if everything went relatively well we were still going to start the season with a top four CBs consisting of: -a 2nd year CB who played like crap 3/4 of the season (albeit very well for that last 1/4) who has a history of injury problems -a retread coming off an a shortened season due to injury -a rookie 3rd round pick who missed most of the last year due to injury -one of Wilson, Walls or Lankster: enough said Not the worst group in the league but hardly awe-inspiring, especially for a coach that leans so heavily on his CBs. You take one or two of those out of the mix and it's looking a lot less pretty. Plus, it's not like the rest of these guys are guaranteed to finish the season any one of them could go down to injury at any point in the season. We had cap space to spare and this year had an unusually high number of decent to high quality CBs hitting the market but we did nothing. This was a mistake for both this year and the years to follow as we were gambling on both Dee and McDougle being starting caliber CBs either this year (for Dee) or next year (for Dex) and now we have no idea what we have in Dex and will have limited ability to see what we have in Dee if he's struggling for a large part of the season with an ankle injury. So we'll likely have to just go out and sign or draft another CB next year, likely at an even higher cost and it's highly unlikely we'll have as many high quality options as we had this year as those guys are now all locked up on long term deals. So he could have spent a fraction of our remaining cap space to address the position for the next 3-4 years but instead we're likely going to have to bring in a camp casualty or retread for this season which will lead to continued struggles with our pass defence and spend another draft pick in 2015 or go out and just pick someone up in free agency next year...or rely on the fact that Dex, who will now be two years removed from playing football, will be able to step into a starting role opposite of Dee who may or may not have proven himself capable during the course of this season. What part of that doesn't sound like poor planning at a very key position for the sport? Especially for a team that had such a terrible pass defence last year.
Supposedly the Jets reached out to Asante Samuel but he wasn't interested at their price. He wasn't great last year but for the right price (they must have low-balled him) its the type of person they should be looking into.
People criticizing Idzik this afternoon simply want something to complain about and are thrashing around without a clue. Again, for the hundredth time, how was Idzik to predict injuries? The Jets have plenty of CBs in camp. Take one out and add the veteran you all wanted at ridiculous salaries - Revis, Cromartie (who I think is done), DRC, Davis - whoever. Then assume that the VETERAN tore his acl today along with the Milliner injury. How are the Jets better off? If the Jets sign a free agent DB, who says they don't have the same CBs left as they do now? What would have happened if the injuries today were to Brick and Mangold. You all would be all over Idzik for not having enough OL depth. If Decker and Kerley were hurt today, you all would crying about how Idzik drafted Pryor instead of Cooks or Lee. If Pace and Coples were injured, the critics would be complaining about the lack of an elite pass rusher. There are only 45 starters on a team and if a team is hit with a rash of injuries in one position, it is going to hurt. The Jets couldn't go into camp with 8-9 NLF caliber starting CBs. Idzik had a philosophy not to pay ridiculous salaries for a veteran CB. He was going with youth. If Milliner continued on the path he was on and Patterson were hurt, would you all feel the same way today? And to claim that these injuries were foreseeable because the two players had injuries in college is just absurd. You all deserve Tannenbaum back and the Jets could then splurge on a few ridiculous contracts for a handful of players that won't lead to a Super Bowl, or he could have traded a bushel of picks for one players. And then a year or two from now, the Jets would be in cap hell again with not enough money to pay their own players and lacking in depth at EVERY position just like two years ago.
Cory Webster is still a free agent ,guy had some decent years with the Giants. He is coming of a season ending injury last year tho so who knows what shape he is in
possibilities on rosters.. Terrance Newman / Pacman listed as #3/4 on Bengals depth chart Will Blackmon #3 Jags Tracy Porter #3 skins Patrick Robinson #3 saints.... brother helps brother? slim pickins...
What you're not understanding is the lack of talented depth at the position. You're comparing apples to oranges. The Jets have a stud at center in Nick Mangold, they have very good players at linebacker, many of them actually, and they have quality depth at offensive line. The biggest question mark going into this season was corner. It wasn't center, it wasn't offensive line, it wasn't linebacker, it was cornerback. If Mangold goes down, obviously we are in trouble, why? Because no team can have a stud starter and a stud backup, it's impossible. If a linebacker goes down, we have plenty of guys that can fill that hole and do very well. What you are missing is that we had NO STUD at corner. Not one. We have a corner, Dee Milliner, who struggled big time last year. Yes, he has a ton of promise, but he is nowhere near a lock at starting corner. We have a guy who gets burned time and time again, Kyle Wilson. We signed a cheap veteran who has an injury history, Patterson. We are left with guys who have a chance to be good, but are very far from it, Lankster and Walls. What does this show? That we have no set starter at a very important position. Idzik had a chance to make many moves at corner this offseason. Let's say, for example sake, we signed Rodgers Cromartie and Davis. Let's say, like you said, Davis and Milliner go down. We are then left with one high quality starter on one side. Let's say Davis and Cromartie go down, we are left with Milliner, the exact position we were in to start this preseason. Quality depth that has talent. We signed no one worth a damn, so where does that leave us? The best corner on our team, a second year struggling player, goes down and a young draft pick goes down. We are left with Kyle Wilson, who gets blown every game, Dimitri Patterson, who is both injury plagued and isn't doing very well, and two guys, Lankster and Walls, who have shown nothing to be number one corners. That's where signing depth at a dire position comes into play. Picking positions to compare that have very solid NFL starters is not a valid comparison. Offensive lineman are set starters. The guys sitting the bench behind them are usually average at best and will fill a hole which is why they are on the bench and not starting on another team. Cornerback is nothing in comparison to offensive line. In a defense run by Rex Ryan, cornerback is a position of need. A position that needs to have a very good starter and top tier backups that can help play a role. We didn't even have one corner in that NFL starter role. When Revis went down, we had Cromartie, a top tier corner. He held the fort and did it very well. If Milliner went down, like he did, who do we have to hold the fort? This is where Idzik failed. Love Idzik and what he's been doing, but he dropped the ball on this one.
Go to Rotoworld and look at the Defensive depth charts at CB. I was shocked at just how shallow the gene pool is for a quality CB. This is the year Rex needs to focus his efforts on coaching up the OLB and getting the most out of them. Its going to make or break their season, not CB.
When you have a ton of money to use and guys at your disposal to sign, it's a mess up. We're not talking about lack of money and lack of available talent. There were plenty of guys who would have done very well in this defense and we all know we have the money.
The linebackers are gonna make or break the season? That's bs,we are good at linebacker with a ton of depth and quality players
Overall, Idzik has done a solid job. But you're drinking green kool-aid if you think Idzik didn't mess up the CB situation. He absolutely messed up. He went bargain-hunting on the FA market and picked up Patterson. Patterson...a guy that has missed 33 games in the past 3 seasons and provided a small sample size. Idzik put too much faith in his "competition mantra". YES. competition does bring out the best in people. But the "best" a player can be is limited to the talent ceiling of guys you bring in. Patterson's "best" is not what the Jets need. Then he goes out and reaches for an injured player in the 3rd round. Now. I like McDougle. Alot. I think he's worth a 3rd....but there was no need to draft him there. They could have waited a couple more rounds before picking McDougle. They shouldn't have relied on an injury riddled guy (he's had injury history since high school) to come and compete for the starting job with two other injury riddled players. It was a risky move. Then, they had the opportunity to sign countless CBs and failed to do so. Idzik has lowballed almost every FA out there except Eric Decker who they desperately needed. There were reports that came out from Jets executives about how slowly Idzik worked in FA. As they were planning to bring in guys...they already had visits with other teams. They lowballed Vontae Davis...and lost him. They lowballed DRC...and lost him. They lowballed Verner...and Lost him. They lowballed and offended Antonio Cromartie...and lost him. You would have thunk they should have started to see a pattern and change their approach. They ignored Revis. The owner is so fed up with Revis that he overlooked a desperate need that he put his ego first. Instead Revis signs with the Jets #1 most hated opponents. As frustrating as Revis has been, he signed a deal with the patriots that the Jets were looking for years ago. A fair deal that was lower than the highest paid corner... They didn't even hear what Revis wanted in an offer. They let a relationship get in the way of business. They made up their mind WAY before Flowers was released...that they were satisfied with having a "Fine" secondary. "We'll be fine," said Rex today. The Jets don't want to be "fine." "fine" isn't playoffs. Fine is 8-8. And on top of this....the dagger is their budget. CURRENTLY 21 Million in cap space. Sure...save some for a Wilkerson deal and next year's FA period. BUT you couldn't spend 3 Million to resign Cromartie....a guy who made the probowl the last 2 seasons. A guy that knows the defense, knows Rex, wanted to come back for less.... Idzik is being cheap at CB. He's settling for "average" bargains because he thinks competition will not only bring out the "best" in players...but also magically make them pro bowlers.
So pick up an injury prone CB because we have a few CB's down with injuries? What would you want to offer for him?
Nope. Not his style. Idzik will bring in a FA here and there for the right price. Baring that, he's building our team through the draft baby! No more overpriced FA. Period. Get over it.
I cant makes excuses for the way Idzik handled the CB situation in free agency but most of the CB's that signed contracts were completely overpaid. Would we really want Vontae at 10 mil per or DRC at 7.5? I dont. The only guy that came at a value was Verner.
