WB - I agree that from a player standpoint there are always going to be "chirpers" and it really has nothing to do with their individual or team performance. However, here I feel Rex is trying to change the mindset of the Jets. He's instilling confidence and allowing the team to show bravado , something that was sorely lacking in our last two HC's. Its funny but when Parcells took this approach everyone put him on a pedestal - and yes he was old school all the way. Bottom line is the Jets played in the Pats shadow the past 5-6 years , our illustrous leaders ( Herm/Mangini) were scared shit of pissing off Belicheck. Ryan , has restored our agressiveness and has the team believing they shouldn't fear any team - will it mean we beat the Pats - not necessariliy , but I guarentee if they go down , they'll go down swinging and that's about as old school as it gets.
Mr. Brady? What are you, a child? So, you hate smack talk and feel that it's weaker than simply quietly kicking some ass. Then why embrace the Joe Namath guarantee in your signature? That was hardly exuding quiet confidence. That was going out and making a bold and ridiculous guarantee when an AFL team had yet to beat an NFL team. Oh wait, you must have realized that it sounded ridiculous, because you address that contradiction: So, now you're automatically assuming no change in our performance against the Patriots on Sunday. New regime = new approach. You're automatically assuming that this team isn't going to show up this Sunday based on the past few coaching staffs? How absurd is that? The same argument can be applied to Namath. What had he, or ANY AFL player, proven against the NFL? Nothing. He had NO reason to talk shit other than a belief in himself and his team. That's something Rex Ryan has brought to this team. Whatever happened before him is irrelevant.
This is in reference to concept not type of event. Competition is competition, whether it be badminton, poker, or sword fighting.
Ray Lewis is one of the biggest talkers in football. Ditto for Bart Scott when he was there. This is nothing compared to the trash the Ravens and Steelers talk before their matchups.
And those games end up being some of the most intense you will ever see. I don't get the idea of people wanting team leadership to stop emulating the HC. It's what Bart has been doing from day 1. Kerry, Bart and Rex take the heat so that the other players don't have to deal with it - namely, Mark Sanchez.
They actually talked smack? funny....I only remember "you play to win the game" (Herm) and "uuhh..ummm...uhhh...we played hard...uhhh...." (Mangini).
I'm not sure who this is directed toward in this thread, but if it's directed toward those who don't approve of Rhodes' smack talk, you're way off base calling them names like "chicken shit" and accusing them of being "scared." How silly. Talking adolescent smack talk days before a game neither proves or disproves anything and certainly has nothing to do with being "afraid" or not. It doesn't even have anything to do with reality. Reality is game day, on the field. I guess the world has changed a bit since I was growing up. In our day we let our actions speak for us, not our mouths. There's plenty of time to talk trash and laugh about it after kicking butt, and it's twice as rewarding.
oh-oh..Peter King is talking trash too. New England Patriots (1-0) at New York Jets (1-0) I buy the Rex Ryan kool-aid. I also buy that Leon Washington is going to be a major matchup problem for the New England linebackers, who made Fred Jackson look like Bo Jackson on Monday night. Prediction: New York Jets 27, New England Patriots 20
Holy shit this thread has gone into lame land. Now we are talking shit to each other. What a sad fucking lot of fans.
