Exactly.... I was as big a Darksider as anyone starting with Week 1 Vs Dallas.... But, frankly, my expectations are the same for next year as last - Those Needs are exactly the same except now we have a full offseason, hopefully a QB that is NOW ready to take another step and a Front office that has a higher priority on those needs.... Many of us wanted OL help when Turner went down or even Mangold - THis year it should be expected - Same deal with backup QB.
Agreed. We contended for the playoffs this year to the very end, missed it by a few mistakes and a 2-point conversion by the Texans. The bar has been raised since Rex got here and that's why people are overreacting, but it's not like we need an overhaul. Maybe we needed some adversity for some of our core guys to not take it for granted and thing we're just going to show up at the end next time.
Jets don't need to change every weakness into a stud player to contend. If they can stabilize the right side of the line, upgrade TE, & bring in speed on OLB or at Safety, I think Rex has the talent to get 10+ wins. For the Jets, some positions were so bad that just putting in somebody of average or middle of the road talent is a huge upgrade. What I think they can upgrade easily: RT - Nothing I can possibly add to the already numerous posts/threads already. Simply bringing in a non-turnstile will be dramatic improvement. TE - Jets must have a player who can block. With all the penalties he picked up, it was a step up when Mulligan could actually be a non-factor. Keller himself isn't a good blocker. Don't want Vlad to be this guy because he's obviously not a passing target. Not looking for Tony Gonzalez. Just a TE that can block & catch passes when left left wide open. They don't need a TE that is fantastic route runner or good at getting YAC or separation before catch to get a HUGE upgrade from Mulligan. Positions not so easy to upgrade Safety: My draft knowledge is pretty weak. Been reading up on random websites and its almost universal amongst them that this isn't a good safety year. This leaves Jets forced to go FA route only. Makes me kinda depressed because this is position I really want upgraded. OLB: Not so easy to get a college player to contribute here right away but maybe it's possible for Jets. The young DL drafted last year is going to have one season under their belts. With Rex, DL tie up blockers instead of shooting gaps. Also, Scott is still capable of peeling blockers & redirecting runners, so OLB drafted will get the chance to make plays without being forced to fight through blockers. WR: Never been a fan of taking WR when the OL needs help. Also, with Holmes making so much $$$ how much can they spend to bring in another WR? If this team that's supposed to win on defense, I'd expect the salaries of Sanchez+Holmes to leave little wiggle room on how much Jets can spend on QB/WR positions. === Positions you mentioned but I don't think need upgrading. Or at least they're lower priority than positions listed above. RB - LT is still good enough to be 3rd down back. He's not breaking tackles but he has good hands & very good at picking up those blitzers. Greene is not a franchise RB but I still believe he'll produce if the line is solid. Greene is simply one of many RB who can't succeed when the OL isn't getting it done. LG - Assuming Brick plays well & Mangold is healthy, LG is pretty solid. Can't have 5 all-pros on the OL & the Jets are very lucky to get such production @ LG considering when he was drafted & how much they're paying for him.
Maybe I'm naive but I don't see TOO many holes to fill, outside of obvious depth. Obviously, there are a lot of moving parts here, but what are our most pressing needs? RT (Hunter, no explanation needed) S (Smith blows, and Leonhard is an UFA coming off major surgery) WR (we only have 2 under contract, Holmes/Kerley, one of which already has a foot out the door) OLB (would love to get younger at this position, plus Bryan Thomas most likely won't be back) These four listed above I consider true 'holes,' as in we are fucked if we go into next season without massive upgrades. Next up: ILB (Scott coming back?) TE (Mulligan replacement) RB (presuming LT is gone) T/G depth P K I consider these as areas where we SHOULD upgrade, but if we went into next season with the same players, I don't think its the worst thing in the world. These are positions that should be relatively easy upgrade (scouring the FA market, a late round draft pick). Obviously, more than anything, we need depth. We struggled vs the run a bit when Thomas went down, and with no Mangold and backup Rob Turner, we got torn to bits. Guys, we went 8-8 this year. This isn't a 4 win team, we don't need to completely overhaul the roster. Just fill in the key holes, add some depth while bringing in younger/faster players on defense.
Hopefully Maybin and Ricky Sapp are the answer at one of the big issues. Time will tell after a real offseason. One can hope. And Kerley could be a bandaid on a huge problem at WR.
I wanted him to stay, and is departure was a huge problem for the Jets, obviously. Despite being hurt, he's not that old and should be able to contribute if he came back. Everyone should admit they made mistakes and go on from there with him back, imo.

I dont know but after i saw JCo make that huge TD grab for the Steelers, I knew instantly it was definitely a mistake to let him go. JCo should of been our #3 wide receiver all season (even though Kerley looked great this year). We need veteran players on this team. I hope we dont cut all our vets this year and sign all younger players. Another thing that occurred to me is that our locker room was most likely ruined after the Baltimore game when Mason flipped shit and we traded him.
I don't know about that. If Mason was the problem, things should have been fixed when he left (a la Randy Moss on the Pats last year). I think Santonio was unhappy with not getting the ball enough and Mason was unloaded to give Santonio more touches. That's why it never improved because Santonio never got what he wanted. My guess is that Santonio and Schotty don't get along. Never have (see last year's Steelers game). One or the other has to go for locker room peace.
Can the Jets be fixed in one offseason? No. And, the longer Tanny and Rex think that this is a "win now" team, the farther we get from winning anything. Right now, as the team stands, we need a RT, a NT, 2 WRs, 2 Safeties, at least 2 LBs, and a DE (or OLB) who can consistenly rush the passer. That's 10 positions that need filled. It will take at least 2 years to fill those positions, and by the time they are filled there will be 10 more positions that need to be filled. The Jets are a "best available player" team. We need to get athletes in here who can perform at the NFL level. Unfortunately, we have a coach who can't adapt to new talent, but rather tries to force square pegs into round holes. He'll continue to trade draft picks for veterans on the downside of their careers, and the talent level will never improve until the owner just gets completely sick of the nonsense and cleans house. Unfortunately, that won't happen until 2014 at the earliest.
They have enough leverage because they have 31 other teams he could go to as well. If they're all offering the vet minimum, then yeah, Tanny holds the cards, but I wouldn't expect that. I'd like to get him back at a very reasonable price.
The Jets will not address all of our issue but they an certainly address most of them and be a competitive team. Adding a Pass Rusher, a quality Safety and a RT will do wonders for this team. Yes there are plenty of other spots we need upgrades but since its unrealistic to think we can solve all of our problems hit the most glaring needs. I am under the impression we will get the following: Pass Rush: with our #1 or #2 pick in the draft Safety: FA ( not sure who, Griffin would be nice) RT: FA ( we just need someone who can play a competent Tackle) WR: FA and Draft - I think we will target Braylon and Draft a WR in the 3rd maybe 2nd I would say those are the most glaring needs. Then with the rest of the Draft we can try to fix other holes.
Just a thought on WR....what's everyone's thoughts on Garcon? I've always thought of him as a dynamic playmaker, and if we're looking to get younger, he's an intriguing option.
I'd also be interested in bringing in either E.J. Henderson or even his younger brother Erin. Erin would be a cheap solution, and I think he has a chance at being a diamond in the rough. E.J.'s much more established in the NFL, but being older and having a knee injury certainly hurts his stock. All of this assumes they end up cutting Scott which sounded like a possibility not too long ago, though I'm not sure there are great ramifications with that with the cap hit.
But no team save a few even wanted Braylon if you recall. And the only reason he was signed to the Niners is because of his old man's connections to Harbaugh who convinced the GM there to take a flyer on him. There's really no guarantee it would turn out differently this coming offseason.
No thanks. The Jets need speed at LB. The Hendersons are slow. There'd be no point in getting rid of Scott. As far as Garcon, I'd like him if Holmes wasn't here. I see him as more of a #2 WR or even #3. Kerley is the slot.
