Context really is everything: "I've shown flashes of being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback, but what we're looking for here is consistency. The best teams have consistent quarterback play and I realize that and that's truly what I want to show to the fans and everyone outside the building," Smith said Tuesday in Manhattan, as he distributed coats at a New York Cares coat drive in conjunction with the Coalition for the Homeless. What was he going to say? "I suck at being a QB and should be benched"
No matter the context, Geno Fuckin Smith has no right to mention himself and the words "pro bowl" in the same sentence. If Jamarcus Russell throws an amazing pass for a TD, does that now grant him the right to say he's had pro bowl caliber glimpses? Lmao Give me a break.
"I need to improve as an NFL QB. There are a lot of good things I have done and there are some things I need to clean up. I believe I have a future in this league and I will continue to get better" That's it. Why even draw attention to yourself by using that term "Pro Bowl" - I remember how much hatred Eli got for saying he's an elite QB.
Hahahaha! If by "Pro Bowl caliber flashes" he means that he has played like he was on vacation in Hawaii and doesn't care what the final score is, I agree.
Every single QB ever to play in the NFL has "shown flashes" of being a pro bowl caliber QB. Every single one--even the worst of them-- has made some plays when looked at in a complete vacuum would look pro bowl caliber. _
I still dont understand why people put so much stock in what athletes say to the media. They say stupid things to reporters and then it blows up into big stories, when in reality it doesnt matter. We have eyes, we know he hasnt shown flashes of anything. But if that confidence level helps his game, than what do I care. Actually, now I do care, since losing is more beneficial than winning lol. Fans put so much stock in what players say to the media, I dont understand it. But everyone's different.
Actually, I do think he has shown flashes (remember the last 4 games last year?). I know he hasn't done much since, and he continues to be painfully inconsistent (which was the knock on him in college too), but to say he hasn't shown any flashes is just plain wrong. I do agree with you that fans pay way too much attention to what athletes say. I guess it's the same people who read the tabloids, people magazine, and TMZ celebrity gossip...the ADD and general dumbing down of our society is real, and sad...
That's a great point, actually. Messaging is everything and if he was talking at a press conference, I'm sure this is how he would have said it. Unfortunately this seems like an off-the-cuff remark that Geno made as he was answering questions while participating in a coat drive. He probably shouldn't have used the words "pro bowl" whatsoever, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Just a comment that the NY Media loves to tackle and magnify even though every QB in the league has probably said something similar in the past. He shouldn't have said it in that way, I admit, but it's not a huge deal and should probably not even be reported.
Holy fuck this myth again? He didn't show jack SHIT those last 4 games, he just protected the ball (which is his job) and didn't look as shitty as he did earlier in the year. Those 4 games have been built up into some sort of folklore that's taken on a life of it's own. He threw for UNDER 200 yards a game, under 59% completion percentage, under 7 YPA. MM totally dumbed down the playcalling for him. Yeah he threw 4 TDs and ran for 2 more and only had 2 turnovers--but THAT'S what we're calling "flashes"? Because he had the second highest QB rating in the league over those 4 games after only PEYTON FREAKING MANNING? We gotta stop building those games up into something more than they were. Mediocre. Had he put together a couple of 300+ yard 3 TD games I'd agree. He was 53.6% for 167 yards in the loss to Carolina. That's flashy. _
Anything is possible and I want him to succeed. He flat out sucks right now and needs a change in philosophy, scheme, mechanics etc.. He's here under a cheap contract and we should continue to try to develop him while we have him under contract. Maybe he can be a serviceable backup? Maybe he could become a decent starter. Problem is, everyone wants him to be a franchise QB right now, and we're probably going to run him out of town before we figure out how good he can be.
Agreed. Those games showed flashes that maybe he wasnt totally awful. I didnt see flashes of Pro Bowler at all last season. Maybe the game against Atlanta, I remember him being good there.
That Atlanta game was the best he's ever played. I was there that night and I couldn't believe how good he was. Totally shut that crowd down. _
And that was great except then we all found out that Atlanta had the defense of a pee wee league team.
I actually erred on the side of caution and put "too soon to say." Here's the problem, who's to say whether or not Geno Smith would be a better or worse QB than with the Jets? Almost every single QB to come through the NFL is a system QB more or less. There are a very few RARE exceptions such as Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and a few others...but for the most part most are. Notable system QB's over the last decade or so have been Brad Johnson, Rich Gannon, Trent Dilfer, Russel Wilson, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco...to name a few... Not a single one of those system guys I just mentioned would flourish within other types of "systems." Having said that...who's to say?
