I don't post much but here's my nickles worth. I see no reason, other than possible salary cap issues, not to sign Pace and then draft Gholston, assuming of course that he's still available at #6. I've seen mocks with him going as high as #2 and as low as #7. Personally if I had my choices, and mind you I'm not sure where our cap is at currently so I may be off there but hey I'm an amature... Try and sign Pace, if Pace signs then market D-Rob, most likely for a draft pick or two. Secondary needs abit of work, especially if they want to do some Man 2 coverage. I suspect the Eagles would want more than we can offer for Lito but I'd float the idea of Coles for Lito swap...It probably wouldn't fly but you never know. I like Coles but he may have talked his way out of New York. Of course trading Coles would necesitate drafting a WR early in the draft. That all said the more likely scenario and probably the better course to be honest would be to sign Randall Gay. Probably my last free agent move would be to sign, optimistic of me I know, But, assuming he hasn't signed and i missed it, I'd take a flyer on Max Starks, He's got a transitional tag so the Steelers could match an offer but it wouldn't cost a pick if they declined to match the offer, of course there is some concern with him coming off of a knee injury but if healthy he's a great choice, of course the knee makes it abit of a risk and he would be expensive as the Steelers have tabled a 1 year 6.87 million deal for him last I heard. if that didn't pan out I'd go for the second best option with Olivea for the Offensive tackle position. with a healthy Starks We'd have an elite offensive line IMHO, of course like I said Starks is a risk. For the Draft in round one my option list would be in order, and I'll list six options even though I know 2 of them for certain won't get down to the Jets. 1. Chris Long (no way he gets down to #6 unless yellowstone erupts between now and draft time). 2. Gholston. Land him and Pace and the LB core is pretty elite. 3. I know I said I'd list six, but I'm going to cut off here sort of with McFadden, the reason being is if McFadden is on the board and the above two are off the board I'd try to trade down as most of my other choices would be around lower in the draft most likely and if we can pick up another draft pick on top of a lower first round pick all the better...Of course if McFadden is still on the boards that #6 will be more valuable than with other options still open. Havent' really thought much about it past that point.
If there's one guy I'm going to trust with the cap, it's Tannenbaum. Whether it's a good football decision to give Pace $20M is one thing, but it must not kill the cap or Tannenbaum wouldn't do it.
I agree.... I'm not sold yet, at all, on Tannenbaum when it comes to choosing where to allocate our funds. However, I trust him completely to keep us out of cap hell....
I think that Tannenbaum is a cap guru, and there are many ways he can go to work it out -- FA plus draft and all.
There is no way Pace is worth the kind of money that is being bandied about in the news reports. Literally no way. You get that kind of money for being a 14 sack monster not a Bryan Thomas who had two good seasons in a row. 20 million guaranteed is a joke and yes it will put us in cap hell if we pay that much to somebody who is not a top-level player.
I felt he was one of the top 10 best outside linebackers in the league in 2007, so I'd list him among the top players at his position. Demarcus Ware, Mike Vrabel, James Harrison, Shawne Merriman, Julian Peterson, Keith Bulluck, and Ernie Sims were probably the only OLBs that were better last year.
If Parcells is in love with him, if perhaps the best cap guy in the league is willing to give him $20M guaranteed, and the one guy here who actually paid close attention to him, who happens to be one of the most knowledgable posters here (Cakes) thinks he was a top 10 OLB last year... there's gotta be something there.
Pace and Gholston. Let's go for broke. Besides, in this day, the concept of "Cap Hell" is obsolete, in my opinion. After next year, there is a good chance there will no longer be a cap. Even so, with the popularity of the game, the chances are that the cap will advance several million $$ once again as it has steadily for the past few years.
Parcells liked Kenyon Coleman too... Tannenbaum paid up for him.... And many, many posters here liked it... He clearly was not as good as advertised....
Clearly? He can't pass rush, but against the run he is amazing. Like most people, you're probably going to claim that all of his tackles came 3-5 yards downfield on the opposite side, too: If that were the case, that would mean that Shaun Ellis was getting run over on a constant basis. Like most people here I would assume that you don't think that Shaun Ellis is garbage, so make your pick: Kenyon Coleman was good and Ellis was mediocre, or Coleman was bad and Ellis was the antichrist crossed with a traffic cone. If you don't make that ridiculous claim that most posters on this board make, then you can't question the fact that Coleman made the tackle practically every time that the other team ran at him. Kenyon Coleman played very well for us and earned every penny that we paid him. He can't rush the passer well. Who cares? That's not his job.
I don't remember what were the terms of his contract. I thought it was an okay signing, nothing big. He was an upgrade over Kimo von Oelhoffen for sure, though. Coleman is not a difference maker. If Pace's head is right (meaning that he played well because he was finally utilized properly as opposed to he played well because he was in a contract year and was playing hard only for money) then he'll be a difference maker for the Jets or Dolphins because he does have quite a bit of talent.
20 million guaranteed is a salary you'd only pay to a pro bowl caliber player, and one who had demonstrated that a couple of times. Do you know what happens to the Jets if they sign Pace at a absolute top tier rate and he then comes in and turns out to be a David Barrett-level linebacker who just happened to be putting out his best two seasons about when you'd expect him too? They live with a cap catastrophe for 3 seasons.
He wasn't good against the run... To make tackles down the field, you don't need to chase down a play from behind... When you allow an OL to engage you and push you off the line, as Coleman did so often, you end up making tackles 3+ yards down the field.... Coleman's ineptitude had nothing to do with Shaun Ellis. He did a good job not giving up on plays, but he was simply not stout, at all, at the point of attack, and gave way too much ground on running plays.... I don't think he is starting material. Yeah, he was better than Kimo, but that doesn't mean he was an effective starter, at all...
the cap is becoming more and more of a joke...if woody wants to spend the money let him in a few years the cap will either be raised significantly or non-existent also...in a year or two, the money pace will be getting will become the norm if the FO wants him...lets get him it also prevents us from having to start a rookie right away... and linebackers dont play every snap in a game...if we take golston it gives us the option to only situationally rush him until he develops every aspect of his position
Didn't Briggs just sign for 13 million also? If thats true, then I have to wonder if the Jets would reconsider there supposed offer.
That's right. The Jets and Dolphins really have to do their homework on this guy. They both must have really grilled this guy in the interview room. The guy can clearly play OLB in the NFL. Will he continue to play well after signing a big deal? That is the question with him. Pace won't record 15 sacks a season. That's partly due to the fact that he'll play on the strongside. However, he should be able to record 7 or so sacks a year and he should play very well against the run.
This is a good comment. I'm not a big fan of Gholston, not now, at least. From what I saw last year, it looks like in 2008 he'd only be good as a designated pass rusher as an NFL rookie. He could play well in such a role as a rookie.
Parcells liked him and Coleman turned out to be solid. But Parcells obviously likes Pace even more if he's willing to spend this type of money. By the way, what was Coleman advertised as? If I remember it was as a solid starter who improved the size and strength of the line. Even if he didn't start, he would atleast provide good depth. He did all of that.
