It was awful and poorly timed.

I say no thank you to Fireman Ed. He'd be welcomed back about as cordially
as Richie Incognito at an NAACP convention.

The drumline is a joke, can't stand it. Its a poor attempt by the Jets to replace Ed leading the chant.

I don't have an opinion on Ed but I'd much prefer if they have someone to lead the chant, whoever it is but not the drumline.

The chant has nothing to do with in-game crowd noise other than it does help to focus the crowd and get them into a frenzy for a few min when there wouldn't be noise (just before kickoffs).

I'd rather that they designate one of the flight crew each week to lead the chants, I guarantee participation will increase when a pretty lady is shown on the screen ; )

    No kidding.

What other team's fan base knocks it's best known cheer-leader to this extent?

Let's face it. We're Mutants. Dysfunctional. F'd in the head.

    Go Jets.

Chad is too injury prone. He'll start the chant and throw out his shoulder.

I hope he stays far away. I like it much better without him.

I was thinking about how awesome it would be for Ed to come back for the playoffs if we'd be so lucky to have a home game.
Truth be told, I miss Fireman Ed. There was nothing that rocked that stadium better during a big game then that J E T S chant with Ed leading the charge.

We're all fans of the same team so I never understood the Ed haters but as a season ticket holder since 1980, I can tell you there's something sorely missing since he hung up the helmet.

I think a good looking woman would work wonders leading the chant. Seems so obvious.

This is a good idea. Let a different cheerleader do the chant each game.

Loved this when I was a young kid at the games. Didn't get played all too often since it only seemed to be played late in the game at blowouts but it was great.

If Ed came back later in the season and the Jets had a winning record and/or for the playoffs, it'd make him look like a bandwagoning douche and there would be plenty of fans that would point that out.

time for a quick story that proves the point

1999, the Jets are 1-7 or so with Rick Mirer at QB...

Sunday AM, Fatso is on the radio and takes a call from Ed who explains that he can't make it to the game that day because "his wife is not feeling well"

Now, let's speculate on this scenario if Testaverde hadn't got hurt and the Jets were 7-1 of 6-2 at the Anzalone household

Mrs Ed... I'm not feeling well today, Ed

Ed... no problem dear.... just try and stay alive until around 6 PM and when I get home from the game, I'll take you to the Emergency room

I like the drumline but they didn't do the chant at the Saints game. At games prior they led it on the big screen, somebodys got to do it.

Maybe not waiting for some mascot to initiate his dopey chant (during time outs when it is worthless) was the reason for the significantly increased noise levels when opponents are on offense leading to burnt timeouts, false starts and delay of games

I think your giving him too much credit. He only controlled the crowd noise after touchdowns, and it was cool to hear the entire stadium get dead silent and then erupt into a chant. He didn't control anything else, or at least I didn't pay attention to it. Maybe he is a douche like everyone says, I don't know him, but it was nice to have a coherent chant. I don't seem why the drumline can't do it though, they play a cadence and then count in the chant. They did it the first few games (so I thought), not sure why they stopped.
