Our FO doesn't seem to care very much about adhering to 'Gentlemen's agreements', so I doubt it's a priority for anyone else to honor them with the Jets. This was a pretty stupid trade if the Saints get him signed without a hassle.
Dear God this is misleading. I expected upon reading the title that Smith had been cut. His numbers ($530k in cap savings) don't exactly present a compelling argument for cutting him. The fact that we have a glut of receivers on the team does, and regardless of ST prowess, he and Wallace Wright have the highest cap numbers. Still, I'd prefer to see a trade happen, even if it's for a low round pick, rather than a simple release. If Mangini is high enough on him to consider Smith a #2 receiver, we should at least be able to get something.
I don't need to defend the OP, but for clarity the title does not say Smith is gone. Nor does the OP.
I have yet to hear a good argument in favor of cutting Brad Smith. He is a special teams ace with the versatility to play WR, RB, or QB. He costs next to nothing, we've spent the last 3 years developing him, and he's shown some skills. You don't just throw that away. You at least let him ride out his contract. edit: and yes, the OP does imply he is gone...
glad to see this isn't true. he's great on special teams and a low cost player. Hopefully he will progress as a wr in camp. If not, teams with poor st play will still want him.
A good contract would have called it an event of default were they to cut and resign merely to get around the comp pick. Oh well...
Good. I believe Clowney is "the real deal" and can't wait to see what he does this season. As for Smith..... more cap space
I would not get rid of Brad Smith. He does alot of things for the Jets & could be usefull in a Wildcat formation. Unfortunately his hands are not good enough at wide receiver. Tom K
You know what, I kind of like that...I still believe Anderson can be a quality NFL starter, he has all the tools that Ratliffe has except he is more proven (I am not a Ratliffe hater, just saying) I'm not saying bring him in to start but at least for competition.
You bring Anderson in, you bring him in to start because you're giving him starter's money. With that said, I don't want this guy at all. He's really not that good in my opinion.
I have no idea what kind of contract he has including guarantees and everything...do you think a reconstruction is possible?
guess i was wrong about brad smith.... i will once again say i have faith in our new staff... that is until they start doing retarded stuff that doesnt work out.
My mistake, I saw his contract and took it at face value which was 3 years at 24 mil. Supposedly he's due a 5 mil bonus soon and whatever team traded for him would only owe him 1.5 mil for 09? I don't know how accurate that is. If that's the case, I guarantee they try to get more for him because he'd be cheap at 1.5 mil. Depends on the compensation the Browns are looking for, but for that price, I'm now all of a sudden interested in giving it a look at least haha.
I wish Smith well but he is one player that I will never comprehend people's hate for. He was a great special teamer/gadget player who had ALOT of production for a 4th round pick. I'm not sure what people were expecting.
I'm not sure either way.But my comment was stating that if he does move on I wish him well..and regardless i don't understand why so many have such dislike for him.
