I really hope we keep Brad Smith. He is very valuable to ST and is very cheap. Also, I think he can be utilized better than he has been. But even if he doesn't improve, he's worth keeping around for the ST play and his price.
Brad Smith was a decent player who did some good things for us. Terrific STer and a threat with the ball in his hands. I wish him luck on the Browns as one of Mangini's "character guys"
Don't agree with the move when it means that we'll lose one of our 2 special teams aces. Outside of Wright, the last "Ace" we had on the squad was McGlover, and that was quite a few years ago- meaning that you can't just hope to sign another guy of equal or greater caliber the next day. Maybe they hope that Carroll can pick up the slack on ST- he certainly wasn't terrible back there. On O- his hands were questionable at best, however he did show decent cuts/moves once he had the ball in his hands. Gadget plays never really worked and the one time he lined up behind center and actually threw the ball I think that I measured the distance in terms of "minutes" not yards. I'm excited that Clowney will now get the opportunity, but just hope that there won't be a signifiant drop-off on ST. Westhoff can't be a happy camper this morning.
I agree. The guy is a great special teamer and versatile athlete on the cheap..... I don't understand some people around here.
An easiliy replacacble facet of the game. Yes he was/is good at STs , but those type of players come and go
This is great news. Wallace Wright is our special Teams guy. We need receivers who can play the position and BS is a Gimmic Guy. Period. Best of luck in Cleveland.
see the one problem with keeping both Smith and Wright as special team's Aces is that they are both recievers! So as a result you automatically are keeping 6 recievers already! plus you have the 6'6 guy we drafted last year in Marcus Henry. You guys also want to draft another reciever to bring into the mix. thats 8 guys looking for 6 spots you can assume that Coles/Cotch/Stuckey are safe, You want to keep Smith and Wright because of their great ST play, and I completely agree with that. so that leaves Clowney/Draft pick vying for a spot. You guys would flip a gasket if we cut clowney for a high draft pick. You would also flip a gasket if we cut the draft pick for Clowney. And Henry a huge target at 6'6 is already an afterthought! You just don't have the ability to keep 7 recievers, hell 6 is generally considered too many. Numbers is numbers, how many ways can you help the team? Clowney has no ST ability, but he is a hell of a burner. Wright is the best ST player not only on our team, in our conference but IMO in the league. He is going NOWHERE. Henry is a gigantic guy with decent route running ability, if he isnt a viable redzone target I have no idea how big you need to be, to be one. Stuckey has hands of Gold, I have yet to see, or even hear of him dropping a pass from his first TC through all of last year. Hell remeber that one third down grab he had in New England? a two yard pass where Mayo absolutely laid him out? that was a great catch, Stuckey is going no where. Coles has his salary garunteed, why get rid of him? You still have to pay him. The fans would go Apeshit if we somehow moved cotchery. A first/second round pick isnt getting cut. and Brad smith is the "utility" guy, he is a ST ace as well, he also has a big frame for a WR he is essentially our gadget player. Who are you going to cut (not draft) to make the numbers work?
Me, too, but since I am not that high on Stuckey, and Coles is tailing off fast, I really hope they still try and pick up someone good. Clowney might work out at #3 WR, but I doubt he proves to be starter level quality. Hope I am wrong...
I think this post is pretty spot-on with maybe an exception about the best STer in the league, although I do know Wright is a fantastic STer on coverage and kicking teams. Brad Smith is also a very good STer, but he is probably odd man out with Ryan coming in if only for the fact that he is a wideout and we'll probably be concentrating on the defensive side of the ball heavily. If BS had contributed more as a wideout, he would probably not be going anywhere.
I'd take Becht back in a second. He couldn't catch well, and when he did catch he would just fall down, but he was a blocking machine.
Doesn't this qualify as "fake news"? To quote the article, which is here by the way, It's some random jackass (Read: Hutchinson) just saying what he thinks should be done. This is not a rumor from a secret source, hell, this isn't even an unsubstantiated rumor. THIS IS PURE CONJECTURE. Idiots.
