Von Miller, Trevathan, Shane Ray. Speed kills. Jets should take a page from Denver and address edge rusher/OLB via FA, draft.
Cause he isnt going to accept a 1 year deal when he could get more years somewhere else. And then they are S.O.L in the QB department.
Too bad Mac and the Jets didn't have a TON of cap space this year for FA. They could have stolen a chunk of the Broncos' team. LOL I don't think their situation is as bleak as you think. Following is a list of Denver's FAs. They have 25 FAs, 2 more than the Jets, but have 9 starters (1o if you count Osweiler), among that whereas the Jets have 8 (Mo, Fitz, Harrison, Pace, Ivory, Davis, Colon and Quigley, although most of us don't want Colon, Quigley or Pace back, and most think Ivory will ask for more than he's worth). They look to be about $10.5 million under the cap, but can quickly shave $19 million off their cap if they cut Peyton Manning if he doesn't retire. Another way they can gain a significant amount of cap space is to release Ryan Clady. They would save $8.9 million if they cut him. Prior to 2013 that would have been unthinkable, but he missed 14 of 16 games in 2013 due to a Lisfranc injury, then struggled in 2014, partially due to struggling to recover from the Lisfranc injury. He missed the entire 2015 season with a torn ACL. He signed a new contract prior to the 2013 season for $52.5 million with $33 million guaranteed the first 3 seasons, but he then missed almost two entire seasons of those three. They may seek to get Clady to take a pay cut or restructure him since he's only 27, but if they were satisfied with the play of Ryan Harris, they might opt to cut Clady so they can keep as many of their starters as they can. Another less likely option is that they could seek to draft a new LT or sign a FA. Some posters have posited that the Broncos may cut Demarcus Ware, who is due $11,666,668 next season and they could save $10 million if they cut him. If Manning retires and they cut Clady and Ware, they'd save almost $38 million against the cap. They could possibly re-sign every one of their starters for that money alone. [ have bolded the ones I think they may/probably try to keep. *denotes starter] Von Miller, OLB* Vernon Davis, TE Evan Mathis, LG* Antonio Smith, 34DE David Bruton, S Andre Caldwell, WR Todd Davis, ILB Ryan Harris, LT* Brock Osweiler, QB* Tyler Polumbus, RT Ronnie Hillman, RB* Kyle Williams, WR Shiloh Keo, S Jordan Norwood, WR Josh Bush, S Omar Bolden, CB Brandon Marshall, ILB RFA* Malik Jackson, 34DE* Danny Trevathan, ILB* Sam Brenner, C ERFA Lerentee McCray, OLB C.J. Anderson, RB RFA Brandon McManus, K ERFA* Bennie Fowler, WR ERFA Matt Paradis, C ERFA* I doubt the Jets will have cap space to sign any of the players the Broncos don't re-sign. I don't know how good Tyler Polumbus might be, but he backed up both LT and RT for the Broncos this season. Also, if the Broncos don't cut Clady, perhaps Ryan Harris might shake loose. He obviously played pretty well in Clady's place this season. Could Jordan Norwood shake loose? Andre Caldwell was ahead of him on the depth chart, but they may opt to keep Norwood and let Caldwell walk. If Norwood is available, the Jets could possibly sign him. He would be a great addition as a 3rd WR, PR and KOR. If Trevathan is available, as several posters here have speculated, he would be a great addition, but I'd be surprised if the Jets could afford him. Antonio Smith and Todd Davis could possibly be available, and they may be better than the Jets' current depth at those positions.
I wasn't talking about the Super Bowl itself. I would agree, that a good defense probably has a better chance at winning the game than an elite offense. My argument is about what it takes to get to the Super Bowl. My facts were to back up my point that teams with elite offenses get to the playoffs more often than teams that rely mostly on elite defenses. You can't win a Super Bowl until you get into the playoffs as the Jets have sadly learned over 55 years with only 14 trips. If we want to continue that miserable record then we should, as the OP suggests, ignore the most important position on the field, QB.
Denver had the top rated defense in the NFL, so I'm not sure where you're getting your facts saying Denver was 'good but not great'. And to say last year's SB was won by the Offense just means you didn't watch it.
If Seattle, Arizona, and Carolina had 'better defenses than Denver', than why was Denver's defense the top rated defense in the NFL?
I agree Turk. The only thing better than getting Von Miller is drafted the next Von Miller for the next 5 yrs for $2M/season!
Or, let's look at the Giants most recent 2 rings, last year's SB winner, and the winner of SB 50. 1) Defense. 2) Defense. 3) Defense. 4) Defense.
You could be right, but 'give me a franchise QB' could take another 20-30 years. In the mean time, lets win us a few rings with the best defense the NFL has ever sceen
Might be a Wilkerson type thing over there. They'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to keep him, but simple math says 'nope'.
You could be right about Rex not valuing pass rushers, but everything he did and said would seem to imply he was desperate for one that never came along.
First off I think we are more than 1-2 players away from being an elite D... Secondly Von Miller has one of the best 1st steps I have seen since LT and Ware is almost a clone of Reggie White so it's not like there are a plethora of these types of talent in the draft... If we want to be the best D in the league we need more speed and natural freak ability at OLB, FS could be upgraded and ILB needs to be a huge upgrade. That is 5 spots that need major upgrades and we simply don't have the cap space to keep all the others and upgrade the areas of need.
Von Miller: "I tried to rub my nuts on Tom Brady's face". Can't make this shit up! http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/broncos-defender-admits-rub-n-tom-brady-article-1.2510995 Denver Broncos defender admits trying to ‘rub’ privates on Tom Brady’s face BY Nicholas Parco NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 10:48 AM Broncos Defender: 'I Tried to Rub My Nuts' on Tom Brady's Face NY Daily News If it was up to one Denver Broncos defender, Tom Brady would’ve had to deal with a different kind of sack during the AFC Championship Game. Balls are nothing new to Brady, who throws one for a living — though how inflated he prefers them is questionable — but a Bronco told Monday Morning Quarterback that he actively tried to place his own two on the New England quarterback during the game. “I tried to lay on him a few times,” the anonymous Bronco said. “I tried to rub my nuts on his face." WHAT DID PEYTON MANNING SAY TO BILL BELICHICK? David Zalubowski/AP Tom Brady was sacked four times and knocked down on 20 plays in New England's 20-18 AFC Championship Game loss to the Denver Broncos. Even though this particular Denver defender didn’t succeed in his personal quest, he had plenty of chances to. The Broncos defense sacked Brady four times and altogether knocked him down on 20 plays in their 20-18 AFC Championship Game victory. While the identity of the Bronco who tried to physically and mentally torture Brady isn’t known, outside linebacker Von Miller celebrated rather crudely after a big defensive stop in the third quarter. Two quarters earlier, Miller intercepted a Brady pass. He kept the football and in the locker room after the game, the linebacker posted a video claiming the ball may not be fully inflated. “Man, this ball feels a little flat to me,” Miller said in the video, poking fun at the deflategate issue that has surrounded Brady and the Patriots since last offseason.
Granted, we keep building the D and OL while we're looking for that QB, but I don't think we'd win one, much less multiple rings without a quality starting QB.
