Yes, there are a number of them who think he still can be a great QB, and that we shouldn't take a QB in this draft, but just roll with Sam. I'm not going to name names because I don't want to single them out and embarrass them, but if you pay attention closely, you'll know who they are.
Of course it does, but as scarce as good QBs are in the NFL, if someone thought they could really fix him or thought that he could come in start and play at a high level, don't you think that at least one team would be willing to give up a 2nd round pick or higher for him? For a low 3rd or 4th round pick, they're willing to take a flyer on being able to fix him. They'd sit him for a year or two, and work on his flaws. He wouldn't be starting.
Let's see what happens during the draft. I can see a scenario when a team is looking to take a QB project, like Newman maybe or someone else, he is taken ahead of them, and they may give a midround pick to the Jets. Or JD may have been made a mid round offer, and a player he liked falls to the spot, so he pulls the trigger then. There is still a decent chance Sam will be traded during draft or shortly after. But if not, I agree, we do need someone with experience to compete with the rookie for a starting job and/or possibly start while rookie learns. That guy could be Sam. He might actually improve under Mike and raise his value.
I don't see that happening at all. By that point, JD should have made his plan. Trading Sam at that point would leave them with Wilson and Morgan. The only vet he could quite possibly get at that point would be a bad one, except for Alex Smith, and he would cost too much.
Well, unlike you, I captured the essence, but your response was less so. Can you at least find a similar throw to what Zach made that Sam also made to make your point slightly more relevant? Could be College, Pro Day, NFL, a backyard workout. Not a completely different throw that is also good (which is completely irrelevant), but the one where he is rolling to the left and throws a dime 55+ yards to the right? Wasn't that the original (flawed) point - that Sam also made throws like that, and Zach wasn't the first to make it? As flawed as it is, to even make it, you have to show a throw that's like that. Not something where we both agree is a different throw.
Great post. Of all of MacCagnan's idiotic drafts, I thought 2017 was the strangest. Instead of taking Watson or Mahomes, he drafts a box safety Adams at #6. Then he takes another safety in the second round. Then he drafts back to back WR Stewart and Hansen in rounds 3 and 4 who both sucked. The he takes TE Leggett, a few more scrubs, then closes his draft with two MORE DBs. In that 2017 draft MacIdiot took 4 DBs and 3 receivers and ZERO OL and DL. Who would ever be that stupid? I thought they would fire him for that draft, and then after that season (5-11, just like the previous season), Chris Johnson ADDS two more guaranteed years to the one year still left on MacIdiot's contract. Dumb dips!
It sure looks like JD will take Wilson. If they take him I hope Wilson works out well but IMO a trade down is better. We could have made out like a bandit like Miami did. Actually we still can--Denver, Phil and Carolina would mortgage the farm to get Wilson because of all the hype. Trade down JD! I don't see it, either. Wilson has a slight build, he had only one good college season (like Sanchez) against a creampuff schedule, and the recent build up now is a throw he made at pro day with no defense on the field. Christian Hackenberg had a great pro day, or at least that is what MacCagnan kept trumpeting after they drafted him. Not saying Wilson will be that bad, but the jets are not one player away. A trade down could rebuild/restock this team for the next several years, AND the jets already have a QB (Darnold) under contract who received just as much hype in 2018, if not more, than Wilson is getting now.
Sure. 1:32 mark. Looks like if the receiver keeps running instead of leaping he catches this ball. Not to mention this was all done in the rain. The jerkoff fest over that throw is so ridiculous considering that throwing opportunity likely won't ever really come up in a quarterbacks life cycle in the NFL. Nice to showcase the arm talent and what not, but the throw is relatively irrelevant.
Thanks to JV for showing the identical throw, but I think we both know what the point of my response was, you just excluded it from your quote and didn't bother to respond to it. Too difficult I guess.
sam throw against the cowboys is better and more akin to the throw wilson made. sam had wow throws with the best QBs in the NFL. that's why I loved him as a prospect. he just never worked out the turnovers and we didn't do shit to help him as pointed out here with bad o-line, bad WRs and bad coaching
Thats why you keep Darnold for another year and get destroyed behind the Garbage OL the Jets have. Let Zach Wilson sit exactly what the chargers did with Brees and Rivers
Hard to tell if this is the same throw from that angle that went same distance, but he definitely missed it, while Zach's was a dime. Agreed, people don't need to masturbate over it, nor over Pro Days in general, but Zach had a really nice workout in front of GMs and people don't need to put it down.
While it is badly mistaken imo, I think this is exactly what the Jets are doing. That's why I'm beginning to have serious doubts about JD and Saleh/LaFleur.
The bold is really the point. The jealousy in some posters is blatant and palpable. It's clear that it threatens them so they have to try to denigrate and lessen Wilson to make them feel better about Fields or trading down or whatever. It's sad. They're the ones who are making a big deal about a Pro Day throw, not anyone here who likes Wilson. That's the irony of it all.
Did somebody doubt Sam's arm talent? The kid can throw he just makes to many bad decisions. Not only does he struggle with reading defenses but just throws stupid interceptions. You don't last in the is league throwing INT's.
IMO Sam's problems are psychological and two pronged. 1. He lost he ability to trust his protection. A lack of trust makes Sam constantly think there is a blindside hit coming, even when there isn't. All QBs have to learn to deal with this. When Sam tries to deal with that he holds the ball too long because its not actual trust, its just him trying to break a bad habit. His anticipation of the pass rush is all screwed up. 2. He has developed an INT phobia. Clearly he has learned the criticism he gets from throwing picks is hurting his career and may get him benched. He is now terrified of throwing picks. But that doesn't make him more accurate. It just makes him play overly conservative and robotic. He plays stiff. His decision making its not flowing naturally. Its contrived and forced. That results in his throws being contrived, forced, and out of sink with the offense. IMO both of these started in the ghosts game. Sam is a head case. If he cant relearn to relax and trust his football instincts again he will always be a head case. Even having some success wont do anything to fix his head. When Sam steps on the field there are two opponents, the other team and his own mind. He needs someone with experience dealing with this stuff to coach him out of it. I have a feeling a guy like McCown would have been a good person to do it because he went through a similar situation and finally overcame it. Just keeping McCown another year probably would have gone a long way to helping Sam develop. Obviously Gase was useless here. In fact, Gase probably just heaped more pressure on him without actually understanding the help he needed. Now that I think about it, Tannahil developed similar problems under Gase. QB Whisperer my ass, he should have the title "the QB Ruiner".
