I like this move. He's great against the run and B. Cox/Hermann will teach him how to play 3-4 OLB. I'm surprised Hobson is staying at OLB though, he'd be a great 3-4 ILB.
Well I don't think we can really compare him to willie mcginest. but I remeber when I first heard that mcginest was switching to LB and I thought that was crazy, thinking that he's slower now than he ever was, that he wouln't have enough speed. but it really revived his career and BT is much younger, so it SHOULD be easier for him to make a switch. Mcginest of course has exceptional instincts and is an all around great player for reasons that can't really be graded at in the stats column. The major thing that helped him out though was that the defensive packages he played in at LB for the Pats the last few years were made for him.If the Jets want BT to have even limited success in small packages at OLB they have to create a system/plays that play into his abilites. I think the only real knock on BT since he has come out is that he can't shed blockers, unfourtanetly I think it's that he just isn't that smart. This will not be an easy switch for him, but if he gets his work together, works on his footing, and abiltity to read and react to offensive plays, this could really work out for him. I would love to see it work out at LB for him, he's been stuck behind to very good DE's during his career, so maybe this will give him a second shot at being a starter.
Don't forget it's much easier for players to explode off when they are standing upright without a 300-330 pound monster standing in their way. This move might turn out to be excellent. I think with the addition of Kassel and the move from Thomas to LB, drafting a top LB seems out of the picture at this point. The Jets are set at LB. They are at least 6 or 7 deep already with players who can make the team. They will address other positions.
I'm not sure I understand which LB is going to play which spot, other than Vilma - and I guess THomas. Hobson, Barton, Kassell, Chatham, who's going to play where? I guess I would go Vilma and Kassell inside, Hobson and Barton outside, CHatham backing up all over the place. And what about Mark Brown, he's been pretty good, too.
Yeah...he started taking crack when his opinion was different from yours. It was too much to take. You will find most posters start taking crack when they differ from you...so be gentle. As far as Thomas goes...Im of the opinion...and can easily be wrong...that the previous coaching staff couldnt put the right guy in for the right job even if they knew how it would turn out before hand. Want to try Thomas at LB? Why not..he has great speed..just couldnt handle most offensive lines. If all of us can agree on one thing..he was pretty damn solid against the run...so the instincts are there. He was just brought in to be a "sack machine" and that cleary wasnt the case. Who knows.
Belichick has shown that he places talented people in many different positions and formations and he thinks outside the box. Mangini has learned a lot from BB and will get the most out of every player on the Jets. Fans here that are already knocking this move are scared that their bust label on BT was wrong.
i havent said one damn thing what my opinion is, smartass. but go ahead... its hard to become a sack machine on the bench. he was great when he replaced john abraham. thomas had 3.5 sacks as a backup, thats pretty decent (well technically he had 5 sacks). he played some NT, some DT, some DE...i really like him.
yeah and Anquan boldin ran a 4.65, it works both ways. he was never given a full shot at DE and hes too small to play end in a 3-4. they have no other option but to put him at LB. lets just see what happens. i think he can do it.
Wrong. We're playing ithe 3-4. Mario WIlliams does not fit. We signed KVO to play end. If he moves to NT, then they are going to play Robertson at end. They also signed Pope to help out at NT. If we're switching to a 3-4, it's to avoid big money in the ends, not spend more.
I think that Mark Brown is gonzo, as of a few weeks ago. The only one not mentioned in your thread is McGlover, who is a burner, ST beast but was sidelined very early last season. I think that we still need one more addition before I would consider this unit to complete, and I use that term loosely. Talk about a hodge podge group.
When Mario Williams is a NY Jet and Mangini gushes how his versitility is PERFECT and the hinge pin for what he wants to accomplish on defense, I'll expect the most Knowledgeable Poster Award to be revoked
kudos to the posters that pointed out back 2 years ago that BT may be better suited at LB........ and those opinions were without the hours of film and recruiting time spent by the former GM jil
lol...I was kidding you about the crack...jk. He did get plenty of time when Abe went down...but was too little too late on many drop backs. Hey...dont get me wrong...When a guy is as big as BT is..and is blessed with his speed...theres a position for him...I totally agree...just not sure playing DE is it. He was as solid against the run as any of the other guys...but is too small to be stuck in the middle.
