I coached against Aaron Murray when he played at Plant HS in Tampa. He's pretty damn good! Never seen a kid his age (at the time) with touch like he had. I'd welcome him as a Jet for sure!
If the Jets decide to move on from Sanchez then I think Flynn would be someone I would be interested in looking at. He's a young guy who has been around for a few years and has played behind Rodgers and is someone that could be a starter in this league. But for the right price of course.
I want no part of Flynn. He's 27 already and still a career backup. He's 6'2" tall. He was a 7th round pick. Nothing at all in his profile says that he is ever going to be a superior NFL starting QB. He got beat out by a 3rd round midget *after* the Seahawks guaranteed him $10 million. If that's not the clear sign of mediocrity I don't know what is.
OUtside of players like Luck who is a no questions asked QB? Murray is an athletic QB, with a strong arm who can make all the throws and a grasp of wnhat they are trying to do on offense.
Oh is it the leak stuff in an attempt to save your job despite incompetence part of the season? I love that part of the year.
There are two QB's in the NFL right now under 6'4" tall who are clearly in the top 10 QB conversation: Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. There are eight who are 6'4" or taller. That doesn't include people like Joe Flacco and Josh Freeman who are very tall but not really top 10 candidates yet if they ever will be. This is a league full of tall dominant QB's right now in which a few short guys prosper. Taking a short guy and hoping he fits in at the top is more likely to get you Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mark Sanchez or Christian Ponder than it is to get you a star and then you'll have a short average QB instead of Joe Flacco back there. People understand this argument when you're talking about a slow WR. Taking a slow guy just limits what is possible except in very rare circumstances. Taking a short QB does also. Except in rare circumstances.
So, would you rather have Landry Jones over Aaron Murray because Jones is 6'4? I don't know that I would and I'm a Jones fan.
We still have Flynnites in Seattle, but the talk is regressing week by week. When Flynn goes, he will be cheaper. I can tell you this... I am very happy we have him right now. If something happened to RW, he should be ready to prove himself start worthy.
I wouldn't want to have either of them at this point. If I had to choose I'd choose the guy who wasn't throwing out of a valley every time he took a 3 step drop. Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are pretty unorthodox in terms of their pocket presence and placement. Brees will throw from 8 yards behind one of the tackles fairly often as the Saints tailor the pocket to be more like a wall against one sideline.
He produces in college football. We have maybe the most productive college football QB ever backing up Mark Sanchez right now. I really don't want the Jets making guesses this time around at QB. If they have to wait an extra year or even two to get it right they should do that. Taking Murray would be guessing. We'll have a draft in here soon where there are 3 QB's worth taking in the top 10. That's the time to make a move and get the guy the franchise will be built around. Until then the Jets can go with Sanchez or even take the lost year next year and put Tebow out there to get that out of Woody's system. That would even work well in terms of getting the Jets into the top 10 for 2014. If Murray slides to the 2nd there's no harm in taking him there. That wouldn't be a huge bet and the Jets wouldn't be screwed for another half decade if it didn't work out.
Tebow is not a QB that you build a franchise around. I don't think Murray would be drafted in the first round, and I wouldn't be for drafting him that high either.
If the Jets are going to take a shot on a QB next season the place to do it is high second, like in the top 10 picks of the second round. They could get lucky there and they won't have to carry a first round contract alongside Sanchez contract for the next couple of seasons. I'd still prefer they go with a big guy over a short dynamic guy though. Whoever the next guy is he's going to be carrying the world on his shoulders once he steps on the field and it would be nice if he was broad shouldered.
Taking the big guy isn't a panacea. It's just common sense. The Jets could very easily wind up with a 6'4" version of Mark Sanchez with the only difference being he could see the field better from the pocket. That's basically what Joe Flacco is. Put Flacco on the Jets right now and he would be struggling mightily with Shonn Greene behind him and only Kerley and Keller to throw too. That said, its still better to get all the value on the field that you can at QB and guys who are tall enough to see over their offensive linemen in most situations are just more valuable than guys who have blocked lines of sight more often.
