... doesn't speak very well about Petty's prospects, but time on the bench hopefully will do him good. Aaron Rodgers had footwork issues apparently also coming out of college, so being on the bench did do him some good. If the Jets draft a QB early, then I don't think Petty has the support we thought he had. Cook and Wentz both OK prospects at this stage. Cook has a higher floor, a decent size ceiling. Looking at Wentz [only 1 or 2 tapes I've seen so far], he's got some good traits as well, but I see him having a lower floor and higher ceiling. Regardless, these guys will need to be coached up big time, but I am very confident in both of these guys and their abilities to make any throw on the field. I saw that with Petty, but that tape of him vs WVU left a very sour taste in my mouth. I think both have some good tools to work with and are both very coach-able. This draft will be intriguing.
He was injured pretty much the last 3rd of the season. Again, completion % does not correlate to NFL accuracy. I don't think the MSU line was great by any means, you have 1 pro prospect on that line and the weapons on the outside and the run game were average to below average. Watch the game where both of them battle it out last year, watch any tape of Petty in college period. He misses on throws ALL of the time. Petty however runs an offense that is much more simplistic compared to the MSU offense, where's there's no smoke and mirrors. You watch the tape, it's clear to see Cook is extremely confident in his ability to make any throw, and he's decent at reading defenses. Like I said, I like the skill-sets he has, and I think the Jets could win with Cook or Wentz if drafted. Considering we might not get a good line prospect, or a good linebacker - I'm all for it in the 20s. I think both will go in the first and a total of 4 Qbs will be drafted in rd 1
He was awful all year and inaccurate his whole time at MSU. EVERYONE can make great throws and EVERYONE misses throws--Petty's arm talent is superior to Cook's and his athleticism and leadership dwarf Cook's. In Cook I see an inaccurate and uncoordinated guy confident in inaccurate throws. With a VERY good line. Petty was twice the QB Cook was when they went head-to-head in the bowl game last year and Cook almost threw the game away twice on the last drive. And Cook to me seems to be somewhat of a dick. I'm only taking a dick like Cutler because of his supreme talent. Cook is no Cutler. _
Before the season 101 said he'd give up on Cook if he couldn't--IN COLLEGE AS A SENIOR FOR A TOP 10 TEAM--complete more than 60% of his passes. 56.1% this year. We're in for another 5 months about hearing about "big boy" throws and how complex his offense was and how he was injured blahblahblah. _
Lol, fair enough - you either hate the guy or think he brings something to the table. That is the enigma. Cutler is a loser, Cook is a winner. I don't like that comparison one bit. A collegiate QB may make 1 great throw the entire season, but Cook makes a great throw at least 2 to 3 times a GAME. Petty hits or misses more often then you think, you put that WVU tape on he was missing receivers all day long. I think Petty has a lot of potential, but I need to see more for sure. Cook actually won the game for MSU at the end despite the mistakes earlier on, but real character is when you make a bad mistake how do you rebound? See tha'ts the thing, some QBs after bad throws / decisions put their head down and pretty much check out the game [see Mariota v the Jets where he head was clearly down and discouraged]. Cook is a dick btw, but that doesn't bother me all that much as long as his head is in the game and the game alone, I could care less. The greatest QBs in the NFL were complete dicks. Cutler is a dick, but at the same time he's a loser that doesn't give a crap. Cook is a dick, but at the same time cares about winning. Big difference. I'm OK on 2 QB prospects right now. The lesson you should take in this discussion is this: Completion % does NOT correlate to a QBs accuracy and the ability to make throws. If you want to nitpick the fact that I said he makes big boy throws then fine, feel free to build on that FACT. Not every QB does this. Saying this only confirms the fact that my assessment is true.
It's very possible that Fitzpatrick will sign a deal easily with the Jets if he knows he's going to be the starter and might choose to hit free agency and see what opportunities are out there if not. Remember that he has no money needs. He's already made the big contract and undoubtedly salted it away for the future. What he's going to be looking for next year is the best opportunity to play football and then after that maybe worrying about the $$$ involved. I'm guessing Fitzpatrick has a very reasonable number in mind and if the Jets extend him the job for next year he's an easy sign. Where's he going to get receivers like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker from if he leaves for the best money offered?
Why do people continually believe this? It's never true. You're also ignoring that the NFLPA exerts pressure for players to take the best deal possible so the contract can't be used against other players. The agent has no interest in advising him to take less money. Fitzpatrick is going to get a good deal. Everyone can put the pipe dreams down that he is signing for league minimum because this year was so "magical".
Not necessarily. Williams being drafted wasn't an indictment on our d-line. Mac is big on BPA. If it's a QB, he's drafting him.
He would look like an "idiot" (that's a bit harsh) if he goes into the offseason claiming Fitz is going to be the starter if we re-sign him and then come week 1 Bryce is the starter. Not only is he flip flopping, he also pretty much made it clear he doesn't have any faith in Bryce being able to take over the reigns in '16. I just don't like the message he sent. There was no need to make a comment like that. Honestly, nothing, nobody profited off of this. Except for Fitz and his agent. You're underestimating our idiotic beat writers if you don't think they'll dig this quote up in camp and preseason and come week 1 if Fitz starts to struggle and suddenly Bryce or whoever ends up starting for us. "Todd, you committed to Fitz as your starter when the season ended, you didn't seem to have enough faith that Bryce could be your QB this year, what has changed since then during the offseason? What have you seen?". Manish and company know how to turn this into a story. Remember, that's the same guy who wrote a week ago that Rex would have led this team to the playoffs this season.
Hopefully that's the case. But I mean realistically if we sign him to a 2 year, 20 mil. contract or something like that he's going to start. So essentially I guess Bowles is right when he says if Fitz returns he's gonna be the starter. You don't re-sign him for that money and then have him sit on the bench. I just don't like that he went on record with this. The media is going to dig this up again, it's just more fodder for those talking heads to create a story and go after Bowles.
Last year he was inaccurate and you were telling us all he was a better pro prospect than Mariota. This year he was inaccurate and you're excusing it again. Making a "big boy" throw is an silly made up description--it's sounds like Francesser talking about a "window throwa". I saw Petty make more "big boy" throws at Baylor then Cook--his arm talent is far superior to Cook's and MSU is a winner because of that team--not because of Connor Cook. Every decent college QB makes 2-3 great throws a game--Cook is no outlier here. The lesson you should take from this discussion is this: He's a career 57.5% thrower in college. He's going to be a 52% passer in the NFL. _
Again, I'm still not sure if you're being serious. He'd look like an absolute idiot if he announced today it's an open competition for QB next year. Fucktard alltime moronic idiot. If Petty blows people away next year and he unseats Fitz in preseason (i) I don't give a fuck what the NY media says and (ii) the NY media will EAT IT UP. They will be ALL OVER IT. Wow. _
Apples and Oranges. Very little downside to drafting Williams at #6. Can you say the same about drafting a QB in that spot? When you draft a QB in Round 1 you have to be committed to him body and soul. You pretty much have to start them right away. Can't be like Petty, 4th rounder, where you can sit them down and wait for them to develop. There's too much money and performance on the line to ignore.
There isn't a QB in this class worthy of a top 20 pick. Yet someone is going to get overdrafted--hopefully 4 of them--and that drops 4 better prospects at every other position to us. _
I agree. That is not to say one of these guys can't be a top NFL QB. However, as far as the Jets are concerned, I don't see one of these guys as being the guy to take us to the promised land. I think a guy like DeShaun Watson of Clemson, could be that guy but I don't know if he is coming out for the draft this year. The guy from Memphis, Lynch 6'6", is intriguing, but I haven't seen him play. Could be the next Joe Flacco.
If the Jets draft a QB, Petty is more than likely an afterthought. We can go back and forth on it but there won't be a budge. I don't expect them to however, but I've been wrong before.
I agree with you on that--if they take a QB in rounds 1-3. If they take a flyer in the 6th, I think Petty is their guy. Westoff seems to think he is. _
