bowles stated when he got here how he handles competition. the starter is the starter until he shows he shouldn't be. this is a good thing at the qb position. qb competitions hold the entire offense back
no the hardest part is understanding the pro offense. He better take this time he has available now and make the best out of it, otherwise the Jets will find someone else real quick
Thanks. I somehow missed that comment or article. I know that most HCs have that philosophy, but I disagree with it, especially in the Jets' situation. How would it hold the offense back? Fitz already has great chemistry and timing with Marshall and Decker. We know what he brings to the table and his limitations. What if Petty could play at a higher level and have the ability to make the throws that Fitz can't? Another example is Devin Smith. We know that Fitz doesn't have that strong an arm and lacks accuracy on deep balls. Fitz could actually hold back Devin Smith's development or Enunwa's, or of the offense in general.
Bowles appears to be a guy who likes heading into the offseason with a starter in name. He did it with Geno last year without ever having met him or spoken to him or seen him in the building. Geno was the starter almost by default because there were no other options, even when we signed Fitz, Fitz was unable to play with the broken leg. So Bowles named him the starter. Fitz with his play and his leadership and his smarts deserves to head into the offseaon as the de facto starter and Bowles realizes that and respects that. The "competition" mantra was just bullshit started by Idzik and Rex because they didn't know what the fuck they were doing. Was Mangold really in a competion? Was Harris? Brick? No. There will always be competition and if somehow Petty or Geno blows away the building next year,, they'll start. But going into 2016, Fitz is clearly and deservedly the starter. For 2016. _
IMO it made sense this season precisely because Fitz was injured, and also as a sign of respect to Geno. I understand doing it again as a sign of respect and appreciation to Fitz, but I'm not so sure that there's still competition when one guy is named the starter. It wasn't just Idzik and Rex with the competition mantra, either. Mac said the same thing and I believe that Bowles did as well, and it was clearly stated as "Every position on the team" which of course, would include QB.
It's a bullshit mantra if you have an established starter at a position. Mangold has no competition. Nor does Revis or Harris or Wilk/Sheldon/Snacks whomever comes back. Nor Marshall or Decker. Nor Pryor. Fitz is in that category. Fitz did enough to establish himself as the clear and overwhelming starter next year. If we trade for Brees or Geno becomes Cam in preseason then that changes. For right now, Fitz is our clear staring QB and having a completion would be a sham and not terribly productive. And I'd love to see Petty become the guy. But he's not. It's Fitz. For 2016. _
it holds back the offense because it leaves them in a stagnant state working on the same plays instead of having the playbook evolve. just think what fitz, marshall and deck will do next year with a whole training camp stacked on top of this years experience vs taking alternate snaps from fitz, petty, geno or whoever else would be in the competition. or better yet think about it like this. decker and marshall just finished their b.s. in fitz&gailey. i'd rather they come in to mini camp working on their masters in fitz&gailey rather than a refresher course while starting another degree in petty&gailey
Can you imagine how much credibility Bowles would lose with the leadership of this team--both offense and defense--if he gets to training camp and says "yup, open completion at QB, it's all even Steven and we're going to alternate all 3 or 4 or 5 QBs in camp with first team snaps". Not happening. Fitz deserves the nod. _
