If we move up from 23 we should be looking at Surtain, a pass rusher, or one of the top three receivers unless Sewell is still there at 10 or later.
The point is our pass rush should be greatly improved with the scheme and with the players we have added. Lawson's sacks should definitely increase, as that wasn't a big thing for the Bengals and they really didn't have another edge rusher to pair with Lawson, he still got a ton of hits and pressures. The Jets didn't sign anyone named Jenkins. He was their former OLB. His sacks were coverage sacks and he isn't a scheme fit. Do you mean Raskins? When healthy he gets a ton of pressure as well. Davis' sacks came as a blitzer. This scheme and Saleh rarely blitz. Davis wasn't signed as a blitzer. He was signed for his speed and potential in playing LB vs the run and in coverage. With Raskins, JFM, and Q on the inside supplying pressure, Lawson on one side, JFM and perhaps Q occasionally on the other side, or Huff, Zuniga and Phillips, we should have a greatly-improved pass rush. Sacks aren't the only important statistic from a pass rush. Constant pressure leads to TOs and inaccuracy on throws. If Zuniga, Huff and Phillips don't get the job done, then we can add a DE in next year's draft. We were never fixing all of our holes in just this year's offseason. Next year there will be 2-3 blue chip DEs in the draft and the Jets will have two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks. We should easily be able to get one of them. There are no blue chip DEs in this year's draft, just a bunch of wannabes. JD has already thrown a ton of resources in FA onto what was already the strongest unit on the team. It would be dumb to expend any more resources this year on the pass rush or DL and ignore other equally important positions and units. In general the D is way ahead of the offense. We're drafting a rookie QB and the #1 priority should be fixing the OL and building around him to ensure that he has the best chance to succeed. Adding another DE does nothing for that, and in fact, would lessen the chances that Wilson will succeed.
I don’t want to predict who will be drafted because that is not my strength ButI will say that JD is going to make “boring” selections or trade down to garner extra picks. These boring picks are going to be hopefully solid picks that help build the foundation, starting with a QB, OL and CBs.
if the jets roster didn't suck and they had a QB on the roster the sly way to play this would be to slither down from the 2 for picks this year and trade out of the 23 for picks next year. of course we likely wouldn't be at 2 if the roster didn't suck, but these are the jets so anything goes.
JD will need an empty bucket hanging from his belt for his yuge balls IF he trades out of 2...... starting to think this is the way to go to secure trask or even jones. one of these guys is going to be big. my bets on trask.
Why would this be "the sly way to play this"? If the Jets already had their QB and their roster didn't suck, then they wouldn't need to replace so many players, and wouldn't need so many draft picks. What they would need is some studs on both sides of the ball at key positions like WR, DE, CB, LB, TE, C and RB. In that scenario, the last thing they'd want to do is trade down just to accumulate more picks. If anything, they might want to trade up to get an elite prospect or two, or at least stay put and take the BPA. The Jets don't have their QB and they have a lot of holes, so your "what if" scenario makes zero sense. This is a very strong, and deep draft. Why in the heck would the Jets want to trade out of early picks for later round picks and picks next year? They already have 11 picks next year, including two 1st and two 2nds. They can get their future QB and either a stud OL or CB in the 1st round and then either take the other position that they didn't take at #23 or take another OL at #34. Regardless of who is playing QB this season, the Jets need help at OG NOW. I'm sure that JD may trade down a time or two as it is, but we need players now. This is the draft to get as many of the needed pieces on offense as we can so they can begin building chemistry and timing, so the team will be ready to compete sooner. The last thing anyone should want to do is to put that off for another year. Next year's draft isn't going to have 4-5 QBs taken in the top 10, much less top 6-7 picks. There may not be the depth and strength of the WR and OL classes, either.

Could be 3rd rounders, could be future picks. Who knows! With 21 picks over the next two years, there is a lot of flexibility. Trading up from 23 doesn't necessarily have to be a gigantic leap up the board. I think we could use pick 66 to make a small jump up to secure a player like AVT or Jenkins. This wait SUCKS!
I’m in this boat as well....from all I’m reading, there aren’t any great pass rushers in this draft. Yes we could use another starting quality DE for sure, but you can’t draft what’s not there, right? I prefer to use that 23 overall on OL or WR personally, but I could also get my head around a CB if one of them falls to us....that is a huge hole right now as we don’t have any proven starters at that spot, just a few kids with potential in Austin and Hall...we need help here in a big way and I’m honestly surprised we didn’t do anything in free agency on this. I think CB is a bigger hole for us than DE right now. but if we do go CB at 23, then the next few picks HAVE to be offense...OG, WR, TE, RB, whatever is the best ranked position when we pick because we need help there, probably in that order...
i'm not a fan for trading up for someone that is falling. of course there are big exceptions, e.g., Sapp Rodgers Tunsil, but there are often good reasons for slip. The issue is some of those guys were not on our radar for deep due diligence. Now if we were smart enough to diligence them and liked them then that's a different thing
