I wouldn't mind re-signing Hamilton at the minimum. reminds me of last year, incomplete starting line and little to no back-ups.
I love what Tangini is doing. There getting rid of all the old/dead wood. There cleaning out the shed....SO to speak. They will be an improved team, whether there record indicates it or not. The team will be bigger, tougher & meanier. ALso...the depth will be better. Only small steady steps are neededd for Jets' this season.
What are they doing? They cut Blaylock who was a bad signing to begin with. They cut Hamilton who will probably retire, he was a one year stop gap. Clearly neither of these guys were in the future plans so it's not like they are doing anything that isn't obvious. On what basis are you saying they will be an improved team? Do you know who they will draft and who they will sign? How can you be improved if all you've done is cut some players who weren't important? How will the team will be bigger tougher and meaner? Why is the depth better? I just don't understand how you can make any of these assumptions at this point of the off season.
I don't really get the reason to cut Hamilton. We traded a draft pick for him, and he reportedly stepped up as a leader in the locker room, and loved being on the Jets. Plus he was a solid depth player making limited money. Blaylock was pitiful though.
blaylock didnt do a dam thing since he got here. he was hurt one entire season and last season he was put in the game and didnt do a dam thing. now im not the smartest man but a guy who has(season stats) 25 carries and 44 yards with 1.8 avg yards and 6 yards as your longest run and no TDS. (you do the math) I think if you put a blind mand in there with a walking stick and a seeing eye dog can get more yards then him. So if we draft anybody the would put up more yards then him in one day.
We all know Blaylock sucks, but it's not like he played last year. It's not like the cutting of Blaylock now leaves a void that has to be replaced. I figured regardless of whether they cut him they would draft another back in the mid rounds to compete for touches with Leon and Houston. It's pretty obvious that Mangini was going to turn the roster over in due time. The only thing I care about this off season is that we draft and or sign multiple lineman on both sides of the ball. I don't care about the running backs, once we have a line that can block you put basically any nfl running back on the field and he will perform.
It's not that 30 is old(Ellis) But I just feel at his salary and age, it is necessary the Jets draft the guy who would eventually replace him in 2-3 years. A. He could be cap casualty next offseason or after, I doubt it, but a possibility. So you would need someone to step in. B. He does a solid job, and I like Ellis, but when it comes to 31/32, the Jets need an understudy to him. And for this season, someone who can give him a consistent breather, keep him fresh, because since the depth was very poor last season all over the DLine, Ellis got ALOT of reps and he wore down a little to me.
I read somewhere that Hamilton was making a good amount of money, and we save over $1M by cutting him. I think it's a very good possibility he's re-signed for near the vet minimum. EDIT: According to Cimini (http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/), cutting Blaylock and Hamilton saved $2M in cap space. I believe Blaylock saved a very small amount of money, infact it might have cost some money... so Hamilton must have had either a large base salary, or a big bonus coming to him. Given that, like I said, I think it's very possible he re-signs for close to the vet minimum if he doesn't retire.
If we do re-sign him, I'd hope we cut Kimo. I just think having 2 guys at the position who offer little on the field beyond "veteran leadership" will hold this team's personell back.
Hamilton was firey but thats about it. Blaylock just sucked. Theres nothing else to say about him. I think these cuts are a sign that the Jets are gonna make a strong push in free agency in 2 days. Im psyched. What number do you think Adalius Thomas will wear?
I agree, and I really hope they didn't decide to cut Hamilton over Kimo. Not that Hamilton's a great player, but he was one of the veteran leaders, and I thought played well in a rotation. My preference would be to cut Kimo, draft the new starter at DE, and re-sign Hamilton for near the vet minimum to play in the rotation for another year.
I agree. Hamilton gave us a spark off the bench. Now perhaps Kimo would do the same in that role considering he wouldnt be taking the "starter's pounding", but based on my eyes, Hamilton offers more physically at this point, than does Kimo.
i'd look for them to cut kimo and then just bring in alot of young players through the draft and FA...no need for hamilton
Jets | von Oelhoffen will likely be released Tue, 27 Feb 2007 20:07:09 -0800 Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Jets DE Kimo von Oelhoffen will likely be released by this weekend. He is due a $600,000 roster bonus Friday, March 2. ......hopefully we cut them both and move on....we can find another vet or hopefully a handful of young players
Is the team salary on the TGG home page accurate? If so, we should really cut the following: NAME-SALARY McCareins, Justin- $2,242,000 Barrett, David- $2,055,000 Ramsey, Patrick- $1,438,000 Hamilton, Bobby- $1,035,000 von Oelhoffen, Kimo- $950,000 Cutting Barrett, McCariens, von Oelhoffen and Ramsey can save a hell of a lot of money it seems... There must be something I'm missing though. I'm not especially familiar with the cap and how it works.
bobby hamilton really didn't play that bad. Then again, the guy got barely any snaps. Also, i cannot see us cutting david barrett. The guy may be slow and give up a big cushion, but his ball skills while the ball is in the air is second to none. He's quality depth at a position that can always use it.
