It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for Rex. -If he starts Sanchez and he struggles, people will bitch that he was thrown into the fire prematurely. -If he starts Clemens, people will bitch that we invested all that money in a superstar QB only to have him wear a hat and hold a clipboard. And you all know it's true. It's just the nature of New York Jet fans.
I'm not big on bumping old threads, especially ones that I have started, but I wonder, the people who voted in this, now with hindsight, would you change your mind now? If Sanchez started to throw another Bills type game, I think I would now be inclined to give him some air and watch KC/EA/KO (?) make the same mistakes. I totally agree that he should take the lumps, but after watching that presser, I got a reminder that this young man is just 22 years old and has a whole lot of football in him, plus a potentially great career. We're not going to the big one (again) this season, so lets stop panicking and keep our draft picks and get what we need next draft. We have a young team and youngish HC. I'm still upbeat that things will be ok
i wanted him to come in half way thought the season. But i've seen these lumps before. You do well, then they get tape on you and you either adjust or fail. Sanchez is too smart to fail. He'll adjust. He's starting, he goes through the whole season. Eli Manning sucked for 2 years before he got his shit together. Its going to take time. To think that he was going to be amazing every week is foolish. This is the adjustment period. if the team can get Cotch back, the offense has enough weapons to outscore the Raiders.. that's if this hobbled defense can hold a bust QB at bay.
I didn't see this thread when it was originally up, but my vote at the time this thread was posted would have been to start Clemens and let Sanchez steal the job when KC starts sucking. But from the point they announced that MS was starting, I strongly felt that he should play out the season for better or worse and let him take his lumps. I haven't changed my opinion, he should stay on the field.
If Schotty stops calling plays with his head in his ass he'll be fine. If Schotty thinks it's prudent to throw 55 yard go routes into a 25 mph gusting wind then I'm a bit more concerned
The Jets have a good young prospect at QB. They need to play the guy and develop him into a good QB. The only way Clemens should see the field this year is if Sanchez completely collapses, in which case the Jets need to absolutely clean house on everybody involved in his development and get some people in here who can develop a top 5 pick at QB, or if he gets hurt. Good franchises develop their QB's as the single most important thing that they are doing at the time they are doing it. Bad franchises never develop a good young QB and so they remain bad.
Keep on playing Sanchez (unless he has another QB rating of 8.6 game). It's questionable if the Jets will make the playoffs this year, so give him some experience.
I am for playing sanchez throughout, the kid one rookie of the 3 week 3 out of 6 weeks this season and won it for the month of september, geez everyone relax. I do have to take a stab at this point though, your saying having Clemens "rack up numbers" would be bad thing? Who care who is successful and what they are paid. Do the cardinals regret starting Warner of Leinhart and making the Super Bowl, do there fans get upset and cry in cereal that Matt rides the Bench.
Its hard enough breaking in as a rookie quarterback in the NFL, but Sanchez was playing with a wide receiver making his first start (Clowney), a tight end who looked disinterested (Keller) and a receiver (Edwards) who has been with the team less than two weeks who was being double teamed in the wind and rain.
I remember a Mike Holmgren interview regarding Favre in his first year. I'm not sure exactly what game it was, but Favre totally shit the bed. Terrible performance. His confidence was in the crapper when he was called into Holmgren's office. Holmgren basically said, "you're my guy. If you get benched, it's because I got fired." Now I personally can't stomach the Sanchez=Favre or Sanchez=Manning comparisons, but that's the kind of thing Rex needs to say to Sanchez. "Me and you vs. the New York media, kid; let's go."
That's basically what Rex said in Monday's press conference, not so much vs the media but he certainly had Sanchez's back.
I had voted to bring him in around mid-season. Based on Sanchez' solid start it seems obvious I was wrong. If he continues to struggle like he has been I don't think it would be a bad idea to pull him for a few weeks though.
Actually Rex and Mark are a little too close for a coach/player relationship. Almost like being too close to your boss. Mark even goes to Rex's sons Summit high school football games with Rex and his wife.
They just asked Rex if he thought about pulling Sanchez in the Bills game and the answer was no. Rex seems to handle the media with relative ease, he tells it like it is.
