Hope nobody shoots the messenger but it sure seems like they're going to stand pat w. the OL....Maybe one more depth signing to replace Doozier. Some outlet wrote an article about a week ago suggesting that this could happen & the team could look to retool next offseason. I didn't read the article so i don't know what the rub is. Cap related? Cohesion? Incompetence? Have no idea. Edit: Found it https://thejetpress.com/2018/03/07/new-york-jets-offensive-line-overhaul-may-not-come-until-2019/
Mac still not bringing lineman in to visit. He made the 1 signing, but you look at these other teams, they are grabbing 2 or 3 guys. Bills grabbed 2 today
1. DL - I think Claude Pelon was re-signed. I expect that they will re-sign Lawrence Thomas as well both as a DE and FB. Former Jets Ealy is still out there. Both Hankins and Williams are NTs. Why would the Jets have any interest in them? They're set at NT with McClendon and Pennel. They need DEs. Did Ed Stinson retire? I don't see him on the Jets' roster, he is a FA, but isn't listed on Spotrac at either the DE or DT position. The Jets have re-signed Xavier Cooper. 2. MLB - I don't think there's anything available here. Either the players are too old or aren't fits for the Jets' D. I think Mac will wait and sign a camp cut, draft someone, or sign a UDFA. 3. OL - Xavier Su'a-Filo was a starter in Houston. Is he injured? Was he awful last year? Is he asking for way too much money? I don't know anything about him other than he was a starter and was pretty highly rated entering the draft several years ago. I'm a little surprised that Houston hasn't re-signed him or that no one else has. Amini Silatolu is decent depth. I believe he played in a zone scheme with the Panthers. I'm a bit surprised that Dozier hasn't been re-signed as Bowles spoke highly of him. Maybe he's asking for too much money, Mac is in negotiations with him or someone else, or suspects that someone better will be getting released. Mac may also wait and see who the camp cuts are. 4. OLB - The Jets brought in Benson Mayowa for a visit. Have no idea if they have any further possible interest in him. David Bass is still out there as well. Marquis Flowers of the Pats is still available. He had 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble this past season. The rest are too old, no good, or don't fit the Jets' D. The Jets currently have Jordan Jenkins, Lorenzo Mauldin, Josh Martin, Dylan Donahue, Obum Gwachum, and Freddie Bishop on their roster. Assuming that they only keep 4-5, I think it will be Jenkins, Mauldin, Donahue, Martin (STs) and a draft pick. I would have liked to see the Jets sign Travis Carrie at slot CB, but the Browns signed him.
You listed some good players there, but I don't think Mac would have any interest in players due to character issues, so that rules out Suh, Pouncey (this is an edit after learning that he is a gangbanger and was involved in a double homicide), Fairley, and Smith. I also don't think Mac will have much interest in older players (Thomas, Bennett, Cushing, Pryor, and Misi), those with lots of injury issues (Pouncey, Joeckel, and McPhee), or underachievers (Ebron). I also hope that Mac brings back Ealy. Robinson and Auston could be good signings. Even if he is older, unless he has no gas left in the tank, I'd be interested in at least kicking the tires on Cushing. Too bad that McPhee has had so many injury issues. He's someone that I'd also kick the tires on. I know that Seattle's OL hasn't been very good, but if you think Joeckel is worth it then I'd be in favor of Mac bringing him in as well.
Not too comfortable giving our rookie QB a Tight end group of Legget and whoever else as his options... we could really use Ebron
yeah i can see that for sure with suh and smith. I wasn't aware of fairley having any off-field or personality problems though. same with the injury stuff, i was just listing options. under achievers though are the bread and butter for value. we took a chance on under achieving ASJ, i could see him taking a chance on ebron for the right price. it would be nice to have a TE with some experience and he's only 25 (26 to start the season) and has caught 500+ yards for 3 straight years. i'm not really sure if joeckal is worth it, but he's young and we need depth. I'm not going to pretend to know all these o-line players because I don't. nobody pays enough attention to individual lineman outside their own team to really know unless they are a huge name.
The article makes some sense, but not Mac's refusing to replace Carpenter and possibly Shell. I understand why he can't do anything with Winters this season, but he can Carpenter and Shell, or at least could have. That's another good reason to let the rookie QB sit this year and let McCown take as much of the beating as he can.
I can live w. Shell b.c at least he's young, has done some decent things & just needs to put it all together. He also has good cohesion w. Winters.. Carpenter could've been upgraded but than again he's arguably our best linemen & maybe it makes sense to wait till we replace Beachum as well as to have a brand new left side. I'd still like to see some linemen drafted for depth, competition & potentially developing into starter(s) in a year or 2. Sitting the QB year 1 makes all the sense in the world on so many different accounts..none bigger than the suspect OL
Just an fyi, next year's free agent class has some nice o-linemen including some good guards. We're projected to have a lot of cap room even with this year's signings and could sign one or 2 linemen next year.
They'll probably re-sign Sterling. He's a RFA. Troy Niklas is only 25, but he's had major injury issues. In his four year career, he's only started 18 games and appeared in 41. Ebron's a classic underachiever. GB's Richard Rodgers is a FA and only 26, but he's had some injury issues (or just didn't appear in a lot of games most years) and more of a depth-type player. Chris Gragg is familiar with the CS and system and is 27. Mychal Rivera is 27, but was either on IR or out of the NFL last season. Ed Dickson was signed. He is a graybeard, but can block and make some good catches for you. I imagine that Mac will either draft a TE, sign a camp cut, UDFA or roll with what we have, but SolidGoldBowles changed my mind, and Ebron or Julius Thomas would be a good signing.
I loved Fairley at Auburn, but think he's both had some major health concerns and some character/or off-field issues, but could be wrong about the latter. Yes, I figured you were just listing some good players who were still available and possible options. Wasn't trying to be critical. As I said I like several of the players you listed, and could be wrong, but think Mac will steer clear of players with injury issues as well. Good point on ASJ. Hopefully, Ebron won't be greedy, and the Jets can sign him on an incentive-laden deal. With Leggett missing most of his rookie season, I'd be very nervous going into the season with Tomlinson, Leggett and Sterling as our only TEs. I'd rather roll the dice on Ebron than some of the older guys, but if Mac is thinking about signing one to a one-year deal, and they still have gas in their tanks, then maybe Bennett or Thomas would be a good option. I don't know anything about their characters. Bennett only appeared in 2 games for the Pats last season, and only 7 the year before (starting all 7) for Green Bay. Thomas started 12 of 14 games last season. He hasn't been as good the last 3 years with Jacksonville and Miami in terms of TD passes as he was his last two years with Denver, but has caught over 40 passes 2 of the last 3 years.
bennett has been dinged up quite a bit and never really hit his potential despite his massive size. thomas has been an injury risk for quite some time. ebron hasn't missed a game i'm aware of and is consistent. he's not the player Detroit expected when they used a 1st round pick on him, but he's young and reliable and proven. we could really use that at the TE position.
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...Copeland/698795cb-5f94-4c99-9804-4a222626ae33 The Jets have signed LB Brandon Copeland. If he makes the team, he will be a STer for certain. Not cure which position he'll play ILB or OLB, but based on his size (6'3", 263 pounds), my guess is OLB.
Pouncy would be terrible. Besides the off field issues. He can't stay healthy. Has 2 bad hips. If anything, his future is at guard. His last good season happened to be as a guard. Long is better suited at center in our new blocking scheme.
I just did some further checking on Ebron. Following is what I found. (italics are mine) https://sidelionreport.com/2018/03/17/detroit-lions-right-call-eric-ebron/ Ebron apparently has some remorse over his play with the Lions as he made the following Tweet: Jeremy Hill signed with the Patriots, and he's trying to recruit Ebron to the Patriots. I don't know if Ebron was one of those players who coasted, didn't have a burning desire to be the best he could be and/or be one of the best at his position, and didn't work hard, but it seems like he was. If so and the Jets are interested, they'd better make sure that he is motivated to do better and sign him to an incentive-laden deal.
could be the case for sure. I think a lot of it leads to last year, the team felt he gave up because he was unhappy with his usage. he's also very hard on himself as well. Sometimes players just need a change of scenery. he's produced good enough IMO to take a flyer on. not amny other 26 year old TEs out there with 1800 yards over the past 3 years
