A lot of good ones already mentioned, but Seinfeld is a cut above the rest. I Love Lucy was fantastic and in my opinion is a close second, I am a fifth grade teacher and I play my class episodes on rainy indoor recess days. The Honeymooners rounds out my top 3. Three's Company and Mad about You are 2 I haven't seen mentioned
When I was a kid, I'd watch Nick at Nite, and absolutely loved: 1. I Love Lucy 2. The Munsters 3. Coach Now as far as modern day shows go, it's an easy top 3 for me, even though one is pretty new, undervalued, and still on the air. They are: 1. The Office 2. That 70's Show 3. Parks and Rec
Pretty good list. I hate Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin's politics and I think it probably hindered their ratings, but 30 Rock until the final season was seriously good comedy. Sounds strange, I know, but I could start watching Green Acres on a Tuesday and go nonstop through to Friday. The Beverly Hillbillies could sometimes do that to me also. But, mostly, I had a thing for Eva Gabor.
I'm old enough to have watched all of these, and I don't mean on reruns, either. Going by the decade in which they started: 60s: Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (defining sitcom loosely, but it was one of the funniest shows ever) 70s: Barney Miller, Bob Newhart Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, M*A*S*H, The Odd Couple, Taxi, WKRP in Cincinnati 80s: Cheers, Night Court, The Simpsons, The Wonder Years 90s: Friends, South Park, That '70s Show 00s: The Big Bang Theory, The Office Top 5 would be M*A*S*H, WKRP in Cincinnati, The Big Bang Theory, The Office, and Get Smart. It should also be obvious why people called the 70s the decade of the sitcom. The Saturday night lineup on CBS in 1973 was All in the Family, M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and The Carol Burnett Show, undoubtedly the best lineup ever (and I wasn't a big All in the Family fan), although the Thursday night '80s NBC lineups were pretty amazing too.

I disagree, because The Simspons has been average now for equally as long as it was great. Although I think season 12 was equally brilliant, there was a very vocal contingent of people who hated it, and season 13 was where it took its nose dive in trying to revert back to the pre season 12 style of humor which it has never recovered from. at best it has had 11 great seasons (though I still say 12), followed by another 12 that nobody really gives a shit about. unfortunately in its quest for longevity the Simpsons has cancelled its greatness out. which is a shame, because at its best it was as great as anything that has ever been on TV.

Crazy to think there were only 3 seasons of Father Ted and I'm pretty sure that's what they wanted. Any chance at a reunion is non existent as Dermott Morgan suffered a fatal heart attack the day after they finished taping the show. One of my other favorite Britcoms was My Family. Not very well known in the states but insanely funny. Ha... never seen it but I do love my Golden Girls... lol I know a lot of people don't like Everybody Loves Raymond but it really reminded me of my family. No sitcom has ever done that but unlike most sitcom's Ray's wife wasn't super hot until she had plastic surgery (in real life) to look hot. She was maybe average when the show started but she played the roll pretty good. I also loved the dad... he was absolutely awesome.

Haha I was just flipping through this weeks TV Guide and they have a feature on the top 100 comedies of all time. I'm gonna see if I can find it online to share.
That's a really interesting point. I had this same discussion with my friend about 2 weeks ago. We were discussing what would probably be the top 10 episodes ever and we both were pretty much in agreement that they all came between seasons 4 and seasons 12. To be fair to seasons 1-3 there were also some awesome episodes and some very funny scenes. One of my favorites was when the plant gets taken over by the Germans and they tell Homer they are from the "land of chocolate" and in his mind he starts prancing around with chocolate houses, rabbits and rain. He then proceeds to start taking bites out of everything. Homer at the Bat is also a classic episode from season 3. Season 4 is really where the show takes off in terms of overall funiness... You have Kamp Krusty, Streetcar named Marge, Homer the Heretic, Itchy and Scratchy Movie, Mr Plow, Monorail, Duff Gardens, Whacking Day and IMO one of the best episodes ever when Homer becomes the president of the union at the Nuke plant.
