I just came back from the diner here in Brooklyn. As I was going in, I held the door for a guy wearing a Roethlisberger jersey. "Stay away from those motorcycles," I said.

I don't feel bad for him at all. He was warned, and he saw what happened to Winslow. But he decided to be stubborn.

Its just like seatbelts, gang. You hear about bad accidents when people are thrown from cars and killed , The people who survived were wearing their seatbelts.

Coffins are more restraining than seatbelts.

thats because nobody really knows.. Its really impossible to say what his future will be at this point. I hope he is able to come back and play because it would be a shame to have such a promising career end because of a stupid mistake. And for all the people that are angry with him, you really shouldn't be. How about feeling bad for the guy. He was involved in an accident that most people that are commenting in this thread will never experience. So, if you are just going to post to be critical of him then just don't post at all. We all know that he made a stupid mistake and that he probably shouldn't have been riding a motorcycle. However, he made that choice and he was a kid. Remember that he is only 24-25 years old. People make mistakes. Now is not the time for people to be critical of him. Now is a time for people to care about whether 1.) he survives and is able to make something of the rest of his life. or 2.) If he can get well enough to be able to play football again. Because obviously football was his whole life and for him to never being able to do that again is like any one of you throwing your life's passion out the window.

Been there, done that. On July 7, 1989, I rolled my nine month old pickup truck on the NYS Thruway between Utica and Syracuse. I remember it like it happened yesterday instead of 17 years ago. I ended up hanging upside down by my seatbelt until an off duty volunteer fireman helped me loose the belt. I was bruised and sore with a minor concussion and a sore neck, but the fact is, I walked away from that wreck. If I had been thrown from that truck, I would have been killed or crippled but the truck cab acted like a roll cage and saved my butt quite literally.

Wear your seat belt -- and see to it that your passengers wear them, too, and put your kids in carseats.

If you ride a motorcycle or ATV or a bike or even ride a horse, wear a helmet!

If you take your pet in your car, either use a crate or a pet seat belt.

It doesn't matter whether it's the law or not.

    Really?
I heard the Knee(s) were NOT serious and that after all the surgeries they are thinking He''ll be ready for camp since the longest injury is the broken Jaw.
and that was from ESPN (TV)

^Yet while his knees appear only to have been skinned, there's talk that his facial injuries, if sufficiently severe, could cost him 2006. It's not simply a matter of six-to-eight weeks of wiring - if, for example, he's got face plates, a doctor quoted by Profootballtalk.com says that six months is a possibility.

I guess his knees aren't as bad as first thought, at least that was what's been printed/said this morning.

Head (face) injuries are always serious, though, even when they don't seem that severe. Head trauma can lead to problems with vision, memory, personality, etc, and each person is different, so there's no time-table. I had pain on the left side of my head when I lay on my left side and experienced some dizziness if I turned sharply left for about three months after my accident.

Training camps open at the end of July, about 6/7 weeks away, and the season starts in about 12/13 weeks ... I don't expect Roethlisberger to be ready to play before October, and I wouldn't be surprised if he missed the entire season.

It’s pretty refreshing reading the posts of a bunch of people who haven’t so much as ridden a moped give opinions on motorcycle safety.

One needs to ride a motorcycle to figure out that you need something between your brain and the pavement at 60 mph? On the road, your safety depends on other drivers. That means little old ladies, people that may not understand a street sign, color blind people that think green and red are the same color. It's a no brainer, and you don't have to ever get on a motorcycle to know this. If you ride without a helmet, you're a schmuck.

The NFL's standard player contract prohibits any activity involving "significant risk of personal injury" - outside of playing football. But many prominent athletes continue to ride motorcycles anyway, despite the personal risk and the possibility of losing salary. Recent accidents involving NFL players and other athletes:

2006 - Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and undergoing surgery. He was in serious but stable condition.
2006 - Houston return specialist Jerome Mathis, a Pro Bowl player, injured his hands and got scrapes and bruises, causing him to miss some offseason work.

2005 - Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. sustained internal injuries and damage to his right shoulder and right knee, forcing him to miss the season. With his leg still healing from a previous knee injury, he was learning how to ride his new sport bike in a parking lot when he hit a curb and was thrown over the handlebars.

2004 - New York Jets cornerback Jamie Henderson missed the entire season while he rehabbed from injuries sustained in an April wreck. The Jets waived him after he failed a physical.

2003 - Indy Racing League driver Dario Franchitti broke his back in a motorcycle accident and missed several races, including the Indianapolis 500.

2003 - Chicago Bulls guard Jason Williams crashed his new motorcycle into a light pole, fracturing his pelvis, tearing knee ligaments and damaging nerves in his left leg. The former No. 2 NBA draft pick hasn't played in the NBA since but was still working on a comeback.

2001 - Olympic skier Hermann Maier broke both legs in wreck, nearly lost one and was told he would never walk again, let alone ski. He won two gold medals at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and added a silver and a bronze this year at the Turin Games.

2000 - Tennessee safety Marcus Robertson needed 150 stitches in his face after a crash in December and missed the regular-season finale.

1999 - Miami defensive end Kenny Mixon missed a game with abrasions and bruises he sustained in a crash after his motorcycle hit a wet spot.

1999 - New York Giants running back Gary Brown was hospitalized in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident over the summer and was sidelined for a couple of weeks during training camp.

1998 - Green Bay defensive lineman Jermaine Smith smashed his elbow in a June accident, prompting coach Mike Holmgren to prohibit kick returner Glyn Milburn from riding the Harley-Davidson he won as MVP of the American Bowl exhibition in Tokyo.

1997 - Major league pitcher Steve Howe, who was attempting a comeback at age 39 with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the independent Northern League, was critically injured in a crash and later charged with drunken driving. Those charges were later dropped after prosecutors decided his blood test was improperly obtained.

1997 - Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Shawn Price injured his elbow in an offseason wreck and missed the beginning of the season.

1997 - Italian speedskater Orazio Fagone, who won a gold medal in the 5,000-meter short track relay at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, had his right leg amputated after a motorcycle accident, ending his hopes for a return to the Nagano Games.

1994 - Former NHL tough guy Bob Probert, who played for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, sustained minor injuries in a motorcycle accident. Tests showed alcohol and cocaine in his system, and was placed on inactive status for the 1994-95 season.
