I think he took the Jets too lightly. They had the momentum going into overtime, and the past few drives we had were ineffective. He probably figured they'd stop us, then Brady could march down and give Gostkowski position to kick for the win.

Belicheck clearly deferred in OT. It's always a gamble, but he felt his defense would force a Jets punt at around the 50 yard line, putting the (game winning) ball in Brady's hands.

What Belicheck didn't count on was FitzMagic for the score.

Apparently NFL coaches don't have a lot of free time to watch the NY fucking Jets!!!!

    No of course not.
Going for it on 4th downs was just a mistake. 4 times
And Gronk, that undisciplined mofo, disobeyed his coach late in forth and converted on 4th and forever.

Holy shit. Can you be more pathetic?!

Yeah, that was strange. It looked like Slater thought he could choose to kick/receive *and* which side of the field they wanted to defend.

That's when the ref told him, you already chose to kick.

He must have been confused, because you don't get to pick both.

The winner of the coin toss gets to chose: kick or receive. The other team gets to chose direction. Pretty simple really. Beli won the coin toss (and elected to kick), Jets choose the direction.

Hard to believe, but all indications are that he definitely chose to defer. As others have already pointed out, the confusion was over the direction.

    Typical Pats* fan response.

Do we think they wanted to jam it up our ass by winning home field advantage in our stadium? Umm yep! Bottom line, Bellicheat got outcoached then tried to get cute and ate shit for it. Accept it, admit it and move on.

I kind of tongue-in-cheek suggested that Belichik wanted to eliminate the Steelers from the playoffs in the other thread but it's possible that's what he really wanted to do.

There's no way the Pats have a better chance to win this game kicking off in OT. They give the Jets a guaranteed possession to score and win the game and if the Pats receive there's at least some chance the Jets never get the ball in OT.

Yea I was kinda thinkin that but they fought so hard to get the game to OT so that theory goes out the window imo

Bellicheat has beaten the Steelers more than any other team, why he would postpone clinching the top seed just to eliminate the steelers is something that is too far fetched.

I think it was just a mistake or he was overthinking the strategy, I bet he probably would not do it again if he had the chance to do it over.

Not bullshit. The player had a stupid look on his face, because he wanted to kick off AND pick which way to kick, which is not in the rules.

There was no better way for them to lose this game than missed on 4th and forever. Actually, they could punt and not go for it at all. Or not tackle Enugwa and let him run into the end zone.
But according to you the master plan was to even up the score and THEN give the game away.
Sorry, but this is just dumb.

Not to break your balls, but according to the rule, the winner of the toss can choose either: kick/receive - or - side of field to defend.

    It's Rule 4, Section 2, Article 2:

"Unless the winner of the toss defers his choice to the second half, he must choose one of two privileges, and the loser is given the other. The two privileges are:
    (a) The opportunity to receive the kickoff, or to kick off; or
    (b) The choice of goal his team will defend."

He did not defer. He chose to kick, which meant the Jets had the choice of which side to defend.
