Not totally sold that we are getting Gay. Might just be posturing on the Jets part. Do they really want to part with a pick that would add to the 10 the Pats already have?
barrett has his deficiencies(speed) but he has a nose for the ball and he actually defends passes from time to time. he also has a bit of a nose for the ball. he does not just tackle guys like so many corners seem to do.
There is no way the Jets make this move. If they did then we'd all have to start wondering if Tannenbaum and Mangini were what we think they are right now.
barret ran a 4.4 comin out of college. u probably just look at his madden rating and hate on him because they dont show his speed any love. he had a big year for us in 05 and he will be back. he's a good competitor and is tough as hell. as for adding randall gay and possibly giving up pick 63. its a move that i dont necessarily like but it does make sense in many ways. gay is comin off injuries but u know we will work him out hard and if he's in good condition, then mangini might jump on him. yeah it adds picks to the pats, but it also gives them another hole to fill. also, gay ran a 4.29 coming out of college so he has the speed and he's played in this system in a super bowl so he has mangini's respect and trust.
Yeah kinda .. although basically the Pats have right of first refusal on Gay, they also have the situation with A. Samuel brewing. I would not put it past Mangini .. or Bellichicken for that matter ... to simply setup a meet n greet to make the other team sweat. Its really not beyond the realm of posibility ... seeing as they have history over players already with the whole Branch mess.
Anybody who has seen Barrett get burned deep knows his 4.4 college speed is a joke. Running on a track versus running in pads, recovering on a bad bump, backpedaling and lateral movement are so totally different that many people these days disregard college 40 times altogether. We've all heard about Coles' legendary 4.19 40 and know it didn't translate, although he is still pretty fast. I agree that he has a lot of heart and he did come through for us in some tight spots in the past, but his speed is not great.
Barrett's rep is as a player who will allow separation deep but then close it up in a hurry at the end. That's one of the reasons his INT's tend to come down the field. Obviously his ability to catch-up just does not matter when he's matched up against a Reggie Wayne or Larry Fitzgerald type receiver who can run away from him at will. That's why he's a good #2 CB but you better have #1 on the field or things will get ugly.
However, Reggie Wayne cant run away from Miller at will, and people should cut our DBackfield some slack.
I think as long as Dyson and Barrett are healthy and on the roster our defensive backfield is not the weakness that some think it is. Drew Coleman can play some CB, Hank Poteat can play some CB, heck maybe even Justin Miller can play some CB if he gets his head screwed on straight. Add a second day guy to that mix and the corners are probably no problem at all. Cut Barrett and I'm a lot less happy with the talent back there unless the Jets grab a good 1st day CB.
While Fitzgerald has great hands, body control, leaping ability, physical strength and runs great routes, he is not (and has never been) considered "fast" by any objective measure.
If barrett learned anything from curtis martin, one of them would be knowing how to help the team in everyway. I doubt he wants to leave and i doubt the jets want to see him go, david barrett should know to restructure his contract, if he truly wants to win with the jets. if he does become a CC then we would look to no other than asante samuel, i mean we should. makes no sense loosing barrett and not going for someone of samuel's caliber.
