The crazy thing about that Rams game is that we had a KO Return for a TD, an INT Return for a TD, won the turnover battle 3-0, dominated TOP and STILL found a way to lose! I bet that recipe adds up to a win in the NFL 95% of the time. Leave it to the Jets to turn it into a loss in a playoff determining game. I think that game was followed by Herm's "letter from the commissioner" press conference.
eh 2004 we were 10-6 with the 4th best Defense in the NFL. We lost two OT games that regular season. That team didn't back into anything.
I'll say 1991 when we were 8-8 (even though we won the last game in Miami in miraculous fashion) seemed more like a back into the playoffs)
If we lose out this season but still get in at 8-8 because everyone else lost out too, then I can say we backed in!
They got off to a hot start and then Pennington got hurt in Buffalo (I believe), that injury is really what began all of Chad's problems. But they did lose 3 of their final 4. Anyway you look at it, that's a pretty crappy way to end the season. I believe Buffalo that year got really hot but fell short of catching the Jets. They won out of their last 10 games but lost a close game to a really good Pittsburgh team to end their season. I'm not entirely sure but I believe if they would have won that game and we would have still lost in St.Louis, we would have been out. But as a RobA said, we would have approached OT differently had the Bills won and we knew we had to win to get in.
Jim Caldwell, but yes, we were incredibly lucky that year. We were 7-7 after a heartbreaking loss to Atlanta that included missed field goals, turnovers, and our defense letting the falcons come right down the field with the game on the line. Then, we got the Colts to put in Curtis Painter after being up by a touchdown early in the third quarter and then we got the Bengals who play the JV squad in week 17, on national TV. We made the most of it by getting to the AFC Championship game, though.
Yes, this is correct, although: 1) Buffalo lost to (mostly) Pittsburgh's backups at home (Pitt was 14-1 and had already clinched the number 1 seed), with the playoffs on the line, making that an absolutely brutal loss for them. 2) Even though we didn't play well during those last 4 games, 2 of our losses were to the two best teams in the AFC (A 17-6 loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh) and a 23-7 drubbing at home to the eventual Superbowl Champion Pats. Chad struggled in both games. I really, really, really wish we won that Doug Brien game (easily a top 4 all-time worst loss in Jets history, IMO), because we had played NE very tough in NE earlier in the season (We lost 13-6 in NE, with both teams entering the game at 5-0 - and the only touchdown of the game came after a very questionable roughing the passer call that extended a Pats drive). Our defense played New England very well that season. (If I remember correctly, the only reason we lost to them so badly at home later in the season was turnovers) I think we would have given them a hell of a game in the AFC Championship game. We would have lost, but it would have been a great game.
Not sure why everyone is sleeping on the Ravens,The cheifs put up 10 points last week.I predict a loss to the Ravens.I'm calling it now the two wild card teams will be the Jets and the Steelers.......
It's funny. When the Giants barely get in they're "sneaking" in or they're "getting hot at the right time." When the Jets struggle in the middle of the year and turn it on at the end to get in we're "backing in."
Backing in is when a team that does not need to win loses, allowing another team to get in. Not a difficult concept.
Sounds a hell of a lot less stressful than managing 53 guys for 10 months out of the year. In all honesty though I can't understand fans animosity towards Herm. Was he a dope at times? Yes. Did he get us to the playoffs 3/5 of the seasons he was here? Yes.
So if the Jets lose one game and get in that means they'll have won 5 of their last 6 and subsequently backed in because of the timing of the loss?
No, it means if the Jets get in because someone loses, that is backing in. That is not the situation now. It happens if/when it happens. At this point it's week by week. You can't start talking about "backing in" until the situation presents itself. Right now it's all hypothetical.
Good point. Go ahead and name all of the teams that don't need to win in this scenario to get into the playoffs.
I agree ... Don't get it. The Jets only won 10 games four times in the 30 seasons before Herm. Then he does it twice in his first four years! ... and takes us to the playoffs in three of the four, including a division title. After our third playoff season, he has a 4-12 season because Chad and Fiedler both go down and we're forced to play Brooks Bollinger and 45 year old Vinny Testeverde at QB ... So they fire him. Completely assinine firing IMO. The next season Chad is healthy and we win 10 games again under Mangini.
animosity - no. He never did anything to me or family. But he was always a goof and even more so, as time went on. Nothing more to read into that. The question is, could we have done even better with those teams with someone a bit sharper in there.
I suspect what you're feeling is that we always have to claw into WC spots because the Pats have dominated the division for so long. In fact, the Jets haven't won their division often (I think just a couple times in decades) so we almost never get that coveted spot where you're guaranteed a post-season berth regardless of record. Instead we are always scrambling for the WC. Because of the wonders of the NFL playoff system a losing team can win their division and make the playoffs while a very good team can come in second in their division and not get a WC spot. Anyway, I think this is why you feel like we are always backing into playoff spots and just constantly clutching to get into the playoffs. To be frank, we are....
