Atlanta should hire someone to run the Run and Shoot offense. Vick is great when he's rolling out and is a threat to run, and he's mediocre at best when he's in the pocket. I like what I've seen so far of Schottenheimer and I hope that no one hires him this offseason.
I don't doubt that it could happen, but I hope it doesn't. Schott is doing an amazing job with the Jets this season, and I want him to stay for as long as possible. His play calls are going very well, and when even though sometimes he has you thinking "Why the hell did you call this!", it actually works out.
I love what I've seen from Schott and hope that we get to keep him for another 2-3 years, but I fully understand that he'll probably be the head coach of an NFL team by the time he's 34 or 35 years old if our offense continues to progress at this pace.
I know that it's a copycat league, but I find it highly dubious that Arthur Blank will follow on one young, pedigree head coach in Mora Jr. with another in Brian Schottenheimer. It seems to me that such a scenario sets you up for repeating Atlanta's present disaster.
Haha. Good one. It would be horrible if Shott left after this season. But I don't think it will happen. The Jets didn't have a top notch offense this year. It got the job done but no one is talking about how scary the Jets offense is. That plus Shott's age makes me think he's not a serious candidate. Either way, if it happens, I'm sure that Mangini has his own list.
Why would that guarantee that penny leaves ? If schott does go, hes going with the intention to play schaub. Vick cant run that offense.
If I were Schott I would look at the Atl situation as a "Can't Win" kind of deal. Expectations are way too high based on one player who is a guy who is more important to his franchise putting fans in the seats than winning football games. Another strong year as the Jets coordinator and he can put himself in position to step into a much better situation.
If your dream is to be a head coach, you take whatever opportunity comes your way while you can. Any team that fires their head coach is coming off a bad season. All things considered, Atlanta is a good place to go.
A big part of our offense is that Chad is a smart QB. Somehow I dont think Vick could handle running the no huddle.
Eh - I agree and disagree. After seeing Schotty's success so far I'd have to imagine that the expectations of his dream to be a HC have been elevated to the desire of wanting to be a successfull HC. Atl's blueprint for success is a little cockamamie. There is really no way to get away from Michael Vick, period. Unless Schotty has some vision of running a dominant offense through Vick it would pay to wait on a better situation - or at least one in which he'd be able to scrap and start fresh.
I think the best place for Schott if he were to leave us (PLEASE DON'T), would be Arizona. He has a QB who seems smart (Leinart), with a ton of talen on offense. With a decent line, they could be great on offense.
Schott's O is all based around the head of the QB... Vick is anything but cerebral. He would fail miserably under Schott...
Im suprised the Falcons havent tried to bring back Dan Reeves the season Vick had with him in his 2nd year of playing was one of his best if not his best season. Now I guess there could have been becuase people didnt know how to play Vick at the time, but that was also one of his lower rushing seasons only like 700 yards 300 less then this year.
I don't agree with this Vick is uncoachable talk. First of all, he's a phenomenal athletic talent. No one can dispute that. He hasn't shown that he can be a smart QB but part of being a smart QB is having good plays drawn for you. Mora, Jr. was incompetent. Vick had every right to call him out. Vick can be coached - it's probably more of a challenge than other QBs but his ceiling is huge.
People said the same things about Mangini. He was only a DC for 1 year. I could see this happening if he interviews well.
I'd be surprised if Blank didn't hire Whisenhunt before barking up the Schotty Jr. tree; that is, if Whisenhunt doesn't get the Steelers' top spot in the likelihood that Cowher resigns. He's a GT guy, a former Falcon, a respected offensive coach and a guy who has gotten the best out of another young quarterback (See: Roethlisberger, B.). The Falcons also don't have the luxury of cutting ties with Abraham, so the next coach is going to need enough credibility (which age tends to confer) to tame the Predator.
If the Jets beat New England, this may be a moot point. The Falcons already have an extensive interview list, and they are likely to act quickly on Whisenhunt (before the Falcons, Fins or Steelers do.)
