Howard, Edwards, Landry and Devito are the right FA's to start talking with. The TE's i haven't been impressed with, and wouldn't pay much for. Brandon Moore and Bryan Thomas are 2 old guys i would still be interested in bringing back as low cost depth. Maybe even Jason Smith if at minimum.
I'm still a little confused on how the tender process works. Can somebody correct me here: Howard is a restricted FA. Instead of signing him to a long-term deal, Jets used an option to force him to accept one-year contract. The amount of money they offer him determines whether he's a 1st round, 2nd round or 3rd round tender. If some team offers Howard a better contract he leaves the Jets and Howard's new team must give Jets the appropriate draft pick. It sounds like a very good deal for team which originally has the player. Why isn't it used more often?
It's used all the time, teams just rarely choose to pay the draft pick of the tender so you rarely see guys who are tendered signed by another team. This is how the Jets got curtis martin btw, that and a poison pill clause.
tannybum should get fired for not putting a poison pill in suckchise"s contract alone. ...oh, wait , he already was!
Haha, the Jets should put a poison pill in Howard's tender: "Upon acquiring Austin Howard's services from the New York Jets, signing team forfeits their second (2) round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and must pay one half (1/2) of Darrelle Revis' base salary for the remainder of his tenure with the New York Jets." Bad joke aside, Curtis Martin signed with the Jets for 36MM/6years. The 4th all time leading rusher at 6MM a pop. I wasn't paying attention to contracts back then but, man it makes contracts these days seem absurd.
doesnt mean we will get a 2nd rnd pick if the Jets trade him remember Leon Washington had a 2nd rnd tender and only got a 5th rnd pick out of it
Not worthy of a new thread do I'll hijack this one: Wayne F. Hunter has been cut and is looking for a job. When he was a backup he did very well. Should we?
No way. This guy is a bum. Always hated the fact Jets even gave him the RT spot to begin with. Ever since he was too tired or lazy or forgetful to even put his hand in the dirt when Jets were on the goal line against Pitt, he should've been cut. WFH is useless trash & not even worth the vet minimum.
He is? He's a young guy with limited experience who showed promise in the run game particularly. He has upside. I'd hardly call him a stiff. He's not an All-Pro but he's not a liability either. He's the type of guy we need on our roster. If someone wants to cough up a second then yes I'll take it gladly, but I'd like him on the team.
Pass x 10000. Guys like him don't suddenly emerge. His problems are mental. If he had a tougher mindset he might have made it here the first time.
Except the results, rather than your assumptions of his mindset for which you have no idea what you are actually saying, because you've never had a conversation with him. He was serviceable at the position and he's young. Again, not an all-pro, but not a terrible player either. I'd be fine with getting a second for him obviously. I'd also be fine letting him battle it out at RT with someone brought in and if anything stay as a backup. Given our cap situation, and our aging offensive line in certain spots, it causes absolutely no harm to keep a guy who just started at RT for us in his first year as a starter.
