Anyone who queries our GM ability to deal with the SalayCap really amuses me as year after year we do the same thing. Nicks , Landry and Edwards would be a good start
We can't say anything specific until numbers are actually announced. But based on a Schefter tweet from last night, the 3 year extension is worth 40.5 million and the whole 5 year unit is worth 58.5 million. So if we subtract the last 3 years from the total of the deal (58.5-40.5) and we are left with a maximum of $18 million in the first two deals which averages to $9 million a year. Tanny also realizes we need cap space NOW and he could make year one 7 million, year 2 (coincidentally when the new TV deal kicks in, in 2013, and the cap takes a nice jump up) could bump up to $11 million or so. Which if true saves us about 7 million this year, which would in theory be enough to get the first year of a Mario Williams contract under our cap. Figure we had 8 million to work with before (already counted rookies), add 7 to it that gives us 15 currently. Williams will get a deal with probably 65 million in truly attainable money over about 7 years (although the reported total will be a hell of a lot closer to 100 million I'd bet.) So his first year salary in that case would be closer to 9 million. Which would still leave us with 4 million for Pouha this season. If Tanny can actually trade Scott and Hunter for used tampons, that gets us more than enough free space to to get enough low-level guys in here to fill out the roster. Fuck it probably would be enough to get Anthony Collins in here to replace hunter. end dream scenario/ Side Note: Realize that Sanchez' restructure was also reported in the $58.5 mil is $10 million in escalators which may or may not be reachable nor was it said when they are do. Remember Brick has like 2 9 million dollar escalators for blocking 7 kicks 5 years from now or something. Not all of this money is usually 'attainable' funds.
I've been looking to a sign Nicks/move Slauson to RT thing all winter Nicks is going to take a lot of $$$ though
You also have to keep in mind that we still have Cro/Holmes restructures on the table if need be to repeat again. An extra 6 or 7 million there could really put us over the top to free up any and all desired moves if Tanny wishes. With the cap increasing next year this seems like the first great opportunity to go out and break the bank on a headliner to me. With the amount of strength we can add in the draft all it should take is one big headliner like Nicks or Williams to let the Jets accomplish whatever they want on that side of the ball next year.
I really hope if we are gonna spend big bucks on one player it is going to be for Nicks. Nicks is a no risk signing and automatic upgrade at a huge need. The kind of signing that will improve the entire OL. Mario is too risky for that kind of money.Although I think it is more likely that we bring in multiple players that fill needs instead of the one big splash.
Not that I think we will go to the Holmes well due to his actions at the end of the year, we could go talk to cro though. and adding extra cap space that way would ensure us the ability to go after a big name and still add cheaper role pieces if we wanted without fear of lacking in space. Tanny is a wizard with the numbers, can't wait to see what he cooks up this week.
It's so funny how us jets fans have extreme knee jerk reactions. Tanny goes from being the best GM, to the worst, and back to the best. I think we at least need to make a pitch for Mario Williams. We have to force qbs to 3 and outs in order to win in the ground and pound formula. Turner isn't a bad replacement for hunter. I'm not saying Turner is faneca when it comes to run blocking, but he will do if we get Mario Williams. Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Gang Green = Bi Polar... Wasn't Tannebaum the worst GM yesterday?? Anyway I hope we get an impact player ASAP. I say OL then get a legit pass rusher in the draft. I have faith in Tanny.
With Nicks and DeCastro we could keep Brick and Hunter (playing as badly as they did last year) at the tackle positions and still have a dominant offensive line. We could also dump Moore (saving $4.5 mil of cap space)and keep Slauson for depth.
Dominant assuming the Jets really went to a G&P as the main plan with play-action, bootlegs and such as the crux of the passing game. Wayne Hunter can't stand in space against either quick or strong pass rushers. The quick guys run around him and the strong guys get leverage and throw him like a rag doll. The only real way to use Hunter effectively is to give him a man to push around in the running game and then let him do that. He was terrible in the zone-blocking schemes last year because not only did he have the problems above but he also couldn't figure out who his man was a lot of the time. The play where Shonn Greene got stopped at the line while both of Hunter's potential targets were on him and Hunter was 3 yards upfield with his back to the action trying to figure out what his job was is an extreme case but it happened more than once last year.
. Moore is a great guard. Why would we want to get rid of him? He has some good years left. I want Mario Williams. I've never been a big fan of drafting pass rushers because of Vernon Gholston (should have played in a 4-3). Bringing ina an established pass rusher is what this teams needs. He is young in his prime. He had the injury last year, but he is young and will easily get past it. I don't care how much money he wants. If we have it, we need to invest it in this guy. Maybin-Harris-Scott(maybe)-WilliaMs Best linebacking corps the Jets would ever have...... Fuck Pace
I've wanted Mario Williams before AND after the pec injury. This defense needs a destroyer that brings chaos (and the need to double team) to take pressure off everyone. Also this defense needs fluidity with reactions and execution rather than thinking and second guessing. If they can get Williams it frees up the 1st round pick to get WR or OL. Then they can go RB or Safety in round 2. Just makes sense to me.
I think we'd all love Mario but he will be demanding prime time numbers in his contract. I would assume something like 6 years 92-94 mil with about 40-45 mil guaranteed. Thats a big chunk of change for one player and would take up most of our cap room. It would be tough for us to get him.
Campbell won't cost too much and would be a good fit for the Jets. He would be a solid/dependable type QB that could play well with what the Jets want to do. He isn't going to start anywhere - when two teams give up on you as their starting QB, you are basically done as a starter in the NFL.
Agreed. I'm hoping for a more solidified O-line and some safety help, along with a nice replacement for Bart Scott.
Unless Campbell (or Henne) comes very cheap then its wasted cap space - we've just sent out a very big indicator that Sanchez is No.1. Before today, any prospective Jets QB may have thought they were in with a chance of starting if Sanchez has another mid-season meltdown. Still, anyone is better than the clipboard-holding, southpaw bankrupt.
I'm all for courting Super Mario. I'm just not sure even with the acditional cap space he's doable b/c he may very well command 20 mill a season. To me the real priority is safety. It's the biggest weakness on the team & is also the weakness of the upcoming draft. Either an incentive filled deal w/Landry(similar to Brodney Poole) or Reggie Nelson who I think matches up well with Gronk in NE.
