I'm not sure we can even evaluate Rex's defense objectively since his HC ability is so piss-poor the team is mentally lost. There's a lot of talk about the team not quitting but I see a team that has no fire. They're going through the motions while Jamal Charles is running like his life depends on it.

Rex had his hands all over the drafts....its just not a good organization from Woody on down. Blown picks, putrid offenses and really just no vision or organization.

Somehow I don't think Rex had anything at all to do with the 2008 draft, nor the picks of Vlad Ducasse and Stephen Hill. What happened with all the vet trades is unclear other than the Jets weren't getting enough out of the draft to avoid making those trades in what passed for their window of opportunity.

You can't draft poorly over a period of years and get away with it for long. You have to bring in vets to fill holes and those vets are 2 or 3 years and out. If you drafted well in the 2 or 3 years the vets covered for you then you have a chance. The Jets early picks from 2008 to 2010 basically blew chunks and finding Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson from 2011 to 2013 wasn't going to cover up that fact. What area of the team is strong right now? The DL. What areas are weak? The areas the failed draft picks accumulated in.

I still can't figure out what the plan for Coples was because he's not an OLB and no amount of pretending is going to change that.

You also cant field a non NFL coaching staff and have Rex as the HC and expect players to develop. The talent has gotten worse, but so has the staff. It's not a coincidence the penalties and the poor special teams play is happening. If Rex needs a star at every position for his defense to be successful he has zero value as a HC.

again, in his time here he has had one true star(Revis) and 2 developing into stars(Wilkerson, Richardson). to say he needs starts at every position is asinine.

I'm not arguing any of this. It's a fair perception to have even if I don't agree with it. I was just pointing out that when you have sucked at drafting players for 4 or 5 years running it's not surprising when the wheels fall off two years later.

Ryan certainly has had his problems performing as the HC. But a significant portion of the blame for the poor D goes on Idzik. It was a trainwreck waiting to happen to depend on the DL to overcome one of the weakest Cb rosters in memory. People here were even talking about how Lankster could be adequate if the Jets' DL got to the Qb enough. KC showed how the DL can be taken out of the game and the secondary shredded.

You can't be so unbalanced that you iognore the need to have adequate quality at Cb. It is too important a position in the NFL.

There is no adjustment for competition, we faced Brees, Ben, Dalton and M. Ryan in our first 9 games last year. But back to the original discussion, at best we have Milliner on one side and ghosts on the other. That's assuming Milliner played a whole lot better than he did last year... cause he wasn't great last year.

No, you don't sign a free agent thinking your guy may get hurt, you sign a free agent because your guy is still a question mark and you have no one else at the position who can play at this level... There was this one guy looking for a 1 year deal, if you think Milliner is your future, a 1 year deal on this one guy may have helped him better understand the position of CB.

Getting back to the competition. We all know this has become a passing league, we knew who we'd be playing this year, the fight card wasn't changed at the last minute. We had no plan beyond Milliner at CB, and when he went down, we did very little to fix the problem. We had a rookie and a 6th round pick at safety, a second year guy who struggled at corner, and ghosts on the other side. And somehow you suggest if only Milliner had remained healthy, things would be different today?

I'll give Rex credit for not giving up 100 points a game, but this is as much his doing as anyone.

For sure. The drafts have stunk...we've lost a lot of strong coaches who kind of were Rex's bad cops...and now we play a sloppy, undisciplined brand of football...Rex has yes men around him now.

I dont think Idzik has done a good job either. This draft was a trainwreck. But the mental mistakes is on the coaching.

What makes Rex a good Head Coach then? Because the defense sucks and so does the offense. As does the ST.

Let me ask you a question here: do you really believe this team would be a lot better off than they are right now if the Jets had signed Alterraun Verner at $6.5M a year?

The offense has been really bad all year long. That's why the Jets are where they are. Couldn't take advantage of two gifts the Packers gave them week 2. Couldn't punch the ball into the end zone and had 3 TO's against the Bears. Miserable performance against the Lions. Shut out by the Chargers. Couldn't run against the Broncos and couldn't get anything going in that context. Ran up and down the field against the Pats but couldn't put the ball in the end zone. 3 picks in 3 drives against the Bills and the game was basically over. Then this nightmare on Sunday where once again the offense drove up and down the field and then choked in the red zone.

This offense gets less out of more than any offense I've seen in years. It's like they play well between the 20's and just blow chunks when they're backed up against their own end zone or knocking on the door on the other side of the field.

Because calling out players for being bums when there's literally no one to replace them is a good strategy for keeping your locker room together.

Yea,. Rodney Harrison and Asante Samuel/Randall Gay are basically the same players as Calvin Pryor and Josh Thomas/Marcus Williams ( sp? / who are these guys ).

Troy Brown didn't start at CB he was used in reserve/nikel role, They had a proven solid rangey Safety, a CB in his prime, and an UDFA that played with them the entire season in Gay ( and he played well, but fell apart in subsequent seasons ). Comparing the 2 situations is so out of left field, People are just being butt-hurt about losing.

Seriously, Enough with this shit. Go be a pats fan if you love Bill so much.

No, but the "defensive genius" should have made it smell a little less.

    Two things:

---a mediocre QB probably gets us an extra TD a game and maybe a TD to replace a FG. That is 11 points. Just guessing of course, but we might be good for 11 more points a game and better defense if we cut down on the INTs. Suddenly a low talent team is pretty respectable.

---Verner? Meh. How is that DRC doing for the Giants? You still want that long term contract, folks? You cannot anticipate a guy blowing out his Achilles when you are trolling through the off season. You can refuse to give long term money to guys who have not been good every year.

QB is such an important position. The bad thing is it is also the hardest thing to replace.

Dude, the Jets D has given up the most points in the league. Just because there are problems on O doesn't mean you raise the white flag on D. Yes I do think the Jets would be better off if they had signed a quality Cb, or just kept Cro, and certianly if they had done both. Your positino that Cb is an unimportant position is an article of faith not borne out by the facts, the very evidence we saw two days ago. A top DL WILL NOT overcome incompetent, inexperienced and ineffective cornerbacks. Face it.

Half the squad has been mailing it in.

Time to evaluate effort as well as talent.

I'm pretty sure Points allowed is a great metric of a defense when the QB coughs up the ball on their side of the field on a regular basis
