I think realistically, it might cost more than 4 million to get Vick here. Kyle "garbage" Orton makes 4 mil in Dallas, and may have set the market for backup QBs. I would rather look at a Shaun Hill or Rex Grossman - granted they aren't good but they would be cheaper options. Chad Henne also. Really wish Jason Campbell were available.
Vick had his best year as a pro in MMs system that landed him $100m deal. He never repeated it but has had success in MMs system, fwiw. That being said, I don't want Vick because of the headache and durability problems.
any qb they bring in should have the potential to be the starter for the foreseeable future. i wouldn't look like guys like vick who will be going year to year at this point in his career. no band aids, young potential is how to find the long term starter.
Vick is the best QB that will be available. I definitely don't want to spend 4 million on a backup QB. There will be other solid options if possible I'd bring in Hasselbeck or Fitzpatrick.
If you believe Vick stunk in MM's system I wonder what you think about Geno's performance in his system?
It's hard to tell how much influence each guy had, but it would be fair to speculate if it was Reid's system, MM saw how to make Vick an effective QB? PHI is really strange to figure out who did what. Reid went to KC, took Alex Smith, and field a great team with a good offense with a QB nobody really wanted. Chip came to PHI, started Foles, and with his offense, created something that turned Nick Foles into an All Pro candidate and LeSean into the top RB in the league. MM came here and was given a very stacked deck of injured QBs, injured WR, a decent OL, and injured RBs. We'll see going forward what he does, as he gets to groom Geno and try to get Geno mechanically better and better at reading defenses.
I think there are five reasons to get a vet Qb instead of a rookie. One is FA is before the draft. Too risky to let FA go by and count on the draft to get a Qb. Sure they could still get a vet after, but the pickings are more slim, or you would have to depend on another team to do a trade. Second is a vet is a better match for where Smith is in his career. With a good vet, Smith could learn from him. And when the vet gets older, hopefully Smith takes over having learned something. (Ftr I am not at all sure Smith will in fact develop enough, but this is kind of a best case scenario consideration.) Third is to get a rookie Qb, with Simms and Smith already on the squad, means the Jets will be developing at the same time THREE Qb's? I don't think so. Fourth is that the Jets have too many needs to fill with high draft picks, and a lower draft pick is probably not even an upgrade over Simms, let alone Smith. I want competition for Smith, not someone who right away goes down in the depth chart. Fifth is that the Jets have more value to use in this off season in cap space than in draft picks. WHy not use some of that cap space on a vet Qb? Those are the considrations for the Jets. A more overall consideration is I don't see real value at qb falling in the draft. If anything teams are too desperate to reach for a Qb. Russell Wilson is a huge exception in recent drafts, but a Tom Brady is a once in a lifetime situation. I just don't see relying on the draft for this situation.
Despite their more mediocre second half of the season in KC, I have great respect for Andy Reid. Imo one of the top HC's in the league. But his main move at Qb was trading for an already seasoned Qb. Andy did not have to develop Alex Smith. Plus Andy has an OC out there. It's not all Andy as far as Qb is concerned. Having said that, and also thinking highly of Marty, I have a hard time understanding what the Philly coaching staff did not see in Foles the year before. In fact many here, including me, thought Foles would have been great to bring to the Jets last off season. Ooops. Too late now for that. But what did Andy and Marty fail to see there? Did Foles just blossom or what? On the other hand I thought Andy and Marty did a great job with Vick when he first came to the Eagles. Maybe if Vick had played for them his whole career, and was nicer to dogs, he would not only have had a much better career, he might be more healthy, too. But he did accumulate some more injuries in Philly, so it's hard to say.
That is true, he didn't have to develop Smith. I kind of attributed the whole turnaround to Andy then praised the offense because of that which is misleading. While he didn't need to develop Smith, I think he made an offense that is good enough and got the best out of Smith than anyone else. Granted Alex Smith had his limitations and Reid hit the wall with all the injuries in the playoffs, but he created what felt like a big play offense even if it wasn't a scary offense. I really haven't studied Chip's offense, but my educated guess is that had to play into it. More often than not, it felt like Foles was never required to make a "tough" throw. You could see he was afraid of making mistakes, to the point where he would routinely let pressure bother him and take a sack, but it still was a very spectacular year. It required great QB play, but I feel like it never required the QB to make "all the throws". I know I am talking in cliches, but that's what it felt like when I watched the majority of the games the Eagles played in. The definite thing MM didn't have that Reid got in KC and Chip got keep in PHI were playmakers. DeSean, LeSean, Charles, etc. If the Jets find someone like that in the draft, I trust MM to take full advantage of them. Now it's just up to the fact if our QB can take full advantage of that too.
I wouldn't say I'm comfortable to have Geno starting but I am excited to see if he takes a step forward. I'd be comfortable if we had a vet back up. If Geno regresses then turn it over to the vet. I can't see wasting a high pick on a rookie QB this year.
GTFOH with this shit. The guy was fucking awful for most of the season, went through I believe a 4 game streak without even completing double digit passes and people are racist if they don't like him? Unless someone is specifically talking about the color of his skin you can pretty much shove the race card directly up your ass and keep it there.
It's the same system. Reid and MM are disciples of Holmgren. The may have differing styles or philosophies but the system is the same.
It has nothing to do with being defensive. People breaking out the race card when it's completely unprovoked are ridiculous and need to be called on their bullshit.
He wasn't awful for most of the season. He had a horrendous 4 game stretch. But his first 9 weeks he was up and down and he had some okay games and some good/great ones in between with a few stinkers. He was up and down in the first 9 weeks, then horrible for 4 weeks then he bounced back nicely in the last 4 weeks.
