I would say that for the NYJ Chad is the ultimate team player. When he was benched he didn't bat an eye he kept his head in the game and he did everything he could to help Kellen when he needed him. They talked over everything on the sideline in case you weren't watching. I was. Chad and Kellen were two guys trying to get the job done. The rest of the team played their hearts out all year, even though the OL was lost, even though the season was over by week 8. The defense slowly got better, and actually helped us to win some games, in spite of the OL's awful failures. Perhaps the best game the NYJ played all year was the second game against the Pats. The defense held Brady to no touchdowns. If the OL had not failed on the second play and let Seymour in to blast Kellen who threw the helpless INT for a TD, this game was going into the 4th quarter 10-13. The OL kept the NYJ out of the game, but Chad kept playing, and the Defense kept knocking heads. You think without Chad, that Tui would have "rallied the troops"? You think a newbie that the team is still waiting on to manifest would be able to keep everybody into the game? There is a helluva lot more to Chad than that so-called "spaghetti arm" that somehow the NYJ CS keeps over looking, and doesn't notice, and keeps on giving him a pass on. Funny thing about that. The CS can't possibly see all of these chronic Chad weaknesses we're talking about, can they? What the hell's wrong with them, for crying out loud?
I for one have to agree with you I thought at first Chad could come back I now believe he must GO. He never could throw a good out pass and now has proven that he still can't I hope we find someone in the draft
Perhaps this "competition" is to let Clemens truly earn the starting spot so that he can build confidence, desire, resolve, and leadership. Why hand him it and let him get fat and lazy with the crown of starting QB... The young kid needs this test of strength, character, toughness- so that when we are down 13-20 with 3 mins in the 4th quarter he can lead us to victory... thus proving why he was worth the 49th overall selection.
He played better than Chad in preseason last year and technically should have earned the starting job then. There are other forces at play regarding this Qb mess!
The competition will bring out the best in both Chad and Kellen. The real beneficiary will be the NYJ regardless of who wins. I think it's a good thing.
If Kellen loses we all lose because Chad has already proven he can get us no farther than the second round with good teams. If Kellen loses the big debate will be should we trade up for the best Qb available in next years draft. He might be ready to win by 2011-2012.
I agree. However, we do have a real QB problem. You wouldn't keep hearing that from everyone who knows anything about football if it weren't true. I don't know if we address it this year or not. I think not. This is not a good year for QB in the draft. We will address it next year though.
I really believe that the NYJ has to build their foundation for a steady and successful running game. It is more important than any skill player. The NYJ have no respect in this league because they are not consistent in the trenches -- neither on defense or offense. It is the first pre-requisite for a winner in this league. Until the CS and FO successfully address the trenches, buying skill players is just a waste of money and dooms us to more frustrating failures.
Again, I agree and I think they have addressed them as much as any team can in a single season this year. I think we get Long or Golston in the first round to play OLB (I hope anyway) and a DE in the 2nd or fourth and that will pretty much do it.
I agree with you 100% regarding the Trenches but no matter how good our line is at some point during the season and especially the playoffs the Qb is going to have to throw when the defense knows a pass is coming. At some point the Man behind center has to step up and make throws that will decides how far you will go in the playoffs against the elite teams in the league.
If your defense is good enough as Baltimore and TB have proven in the past you can get away without having that elite QB and still win it all.
What about Eric Crouch? He's a fucking badass. Schottenheimer could bring the option to the NFL. I know we'd be a pretty one-dimensional team, but it would be fun to watch.
So your basically saying we have to have one of the top three or four defenses of all time to win a super bowl with Chad? Unfortunately we have nothing remotely close to Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Warren Sapp or Derrick Brooks on our defense so that is not an option. Although I do believe that Harris could be something special. Even If we had those defenses we still would prob not be able to keep the Chargers, Pats or Colts under 17 in a playoff game.
Not at all, don't read between the lines. I am saying we have to have one of the best defenses in the league at this point in time to win with either Pennington or Clemens. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about it either.
You're right, a top 10 D keep this team afloat. I can see us being a 9+ win season if the D keeps us in the game, allowing the O the margin for error. I don't know which QB would make less errors, but I feel Clemens would make less. He doesn't throw game ending interceptions.
You're pretty wrong. Even though I agree that he is not the guy we should start this season, most of your comments differ from what just about every NFL analyst and former-player-turned-commentator including QBs. I was watching NFL Total Access yesterday, and as they said "it seems like the Jets are spending all this FA money because they have a win-now attitude, and if this bolstered O-line can provide some run support, Pennington has to be the guy to have back there". In a way they are right. My opinion is that finally our real problem is actually the QB. It never was last season, regardless of how many people thought so. It was O-line and our defensive scheme. Now, if these FAs solve our problems, QB is finally the biggest weak spot. If we have a win-now attitude because we're pluggin in players with known ability, why would we want a player with questionable ability (Clemens hasn't proven himself yet) behind centre? However, why would we want a player with proven but limited ability back there (Pennington)? A rookie starter is going to reek of rebuilding, so we can't do that either, because thanks to FA we're supposed to be rebuilt now. If we can consistently establish a good running game, then right now I think Pennington gives us the best chance, especially if he only throws 20 times/game. I will feel this way until Kellen proves that he can be consistently accurate, and be more patient. Basically, for me to really believe in Kellen, I want to see the 4th quarter of the Baltimore game every week.
Bingo!..that's what I have been trying to say for weeks but you put it so much better. Also why McFadden would be better now than Long or Golston. However, if he isn't there then Long or Golston has to be taken. We have to put ourselves in a position to get one of the three no matter what the cost in picks is for the reasons you have already outlined. It's win now.
No, it's not. Why should we bank our whole draft on one or two players again? The pick at 6 could/should net us one of Long, Long, McFadden, Mendenhall, Gholston, one of the corners, or someone like Harvey or Groves. The whole reason they went and filled G, OLB, RT, and NT in pre-draft transactions is so they could go BPA in the draft. It's the strategy they had last offseason, and even the offseason before that. This offseason we just had a little bit more money to spend and got to sign some bigger names/better players. We're still a really, really young team...I'm not sure why people forget that.
What Don't You All Understand?? AND I APOLOGIZE FOR THE CAPS BUT THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THROUGH TO YOU ALL. The NFL is a business, and it not what you did last year or in 2004 or 2002 that matters, ITS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME NOW. Because of this Mangini, like any good business, has employed a competitive environment to judge top talent. SO, the Jets will have a highly publicized and reported QB competition in the summer and pre-season. BEST MAN WINS. PERIOD, that is the better QB and will start. Of course if Pennington wins he can execute every throw this coaching staff is asking of him, so would you all shut the F up about his weak arm. If Pennignton's decision making is sound, he will start, so will you all shut the F up about his bad decisions last year. It is very simple, competition is king and the best man will start, its that easy to understand. It's not about the past, that Pennington is 31 (which is prime for a QB), surgeries, Free agent pickups...its about who kicks ass in the summer and that player starts.
Who said anything about our whole draft and who said anything about one or two players? I said we need to get one of those three guys. If we can't do that we need to get out of the #6 spot. Since there is no assurances whatsoever that we can trade down then we need to move up to get who we want or need. Moving from 6 to 4 would cost a 3rd (which we don't have) or two 4ths plus our number 6. We need to do what makes sense. Of course there is also no guarantee that we can get Davis to accept it. If you can guarantee that Chris Long, Golston or McFadden will still be there at #6 then great. Nobody else can. Mendenhall at #6 is poor value. Jake Long won't be there. They won't take Ryan. Ellis and Dorsey are 4-3 DTs and won't help us at all. I see no other choices. Oh, and the strategy last year was not to take the BPA, but to trade up (twice) to get the player they wanted. Last year it made far less sense when we had a ton of holes to fill. This year it makes perfect sense when we have already filled so many needs through FA.
