This is what one writer had to say about Jay Cutler: 1- Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt This is so blatantly obvious that I am amazed that any team will pick Cutler in the first round (of course someone will). You would think that NFL GMs and coaches would be smart enough to see this disaster waiting to happen. Every year there is a QB who was decent in college, nothing special just decent maybe a 2nd and 3rd rounder at best. Then at the combine, senior bowl, or pro day the QB shows great athletic skills (rocket arm, good mobility, solid 40 time, etc, etc) next thing you know the QB shoots on the draft board and start challenging QBs who have won national titles to be the first QB taken. I call it Kyle Boller syndrome. I went back and watched tape on Cutler and about 10 other QBs that will be drafted this year. It is obvious that Cutler will be a back up QB in the NFL at best. In his defense he didn’t have the greatest talent at Vandy, but great QBs usually raise the level of their teammates and Cutler never got Vandy over .500 in his career there. You will be making a big mistake (especially financially) by drafting Cutler high in the 1st round. You would be better off drafting Omar Jacobs, Brodie Croyle, Kellen Clemens or Charlie Whitehurst in the later rounds because they are all better QBs than Cutler. Who knows what at the end
I said it in the draft forum - Culpepper needed Randy Moss, this kid won't have Randy Moss, he does not possess what it takes to be an NFL QB.
I'm with you on this... The only team I think Freeman has the potential to succeed on is the Detroit Lions. Scott Linehan worked wonders with Daunte Culpepper in Minnesota...he's now the OC in Detroit. Calvin Johnson would be Josh Freeman's Randy Moss. I still don't know if that would be enough... I said earlier in this thread - Freeman needs a big time wideout to rely on.
What has Jay Cutler done that's so great? He's put up decent numbers. That's it. He's led the Broncos to 7-9 and 8-8 seasons...and they haven't made the playoffs with him as their starter. I know they were on their 50th or so running back, but still... In 2008, they lost 4 of their last 6 games in a monumental collapse. He threw 7 TDs to 6 INTs over that stretch. Get off of Cutler's diabetic wein, man.
The point that was being made is that Cutler is starting. The rest of the QBs from that class are holding clip boards. Is he a Franchise QB? The jury is still out, but I do know that he was third in the year this league with yards thrown (4526) Not bad for a guy that some considered a bust
I love the guy who said "Freeman doesn't have what it takes to make it in the NFL". Seriously man? Freeman has every physical tool necessary to make it in the NFL, he played with subpar talent around him at KS, and improved every year in college. I can understand saying that a guy like Harrell doesn't have what it takes due to his questionable arm, but saying someone like Freeman doesn't have what it "takes" to be an NFL QB is ludicrious. The attraction of guys like Freeman, Cutler, Ryan Leaf, and Akili Smith is the fact that they have exactly what it takes to be a star QB in the NFL. Whether they can harness that talent or have the intangibles to lead a team is a different story.
And that is the key to the QB position. Can they make the transition to the pro game and become that guy. That is really what is trying to be evaluated by scouts. Something that isn't necessarily prevalent to see. Its more of a gut feeling when it comes to knowing if they have "it" or not. Unless you're Matt Ryan - his "it" factor basically smacks you in the face if you aren't paying attention. His interviews back in Boston College were all I needed to see to know he was the next generation QB.
I agree with that, and I think until we see or read reviews of their interviews, it's ridiculous to assume that any of these guys have bad intangibles.
That's fine and I have no problem with Matt Ryan, but Matt Ryan did not become a full-time starter until his senior season. Not taking anything away from him, because I can't, but some of the other guys were starters for longer. We'll see
Have you seen this kid play? I wouldn't blame the Bronco collapse on him. Their defense was one of the worst in the league! Tell me you wouldn't want him taking snaps from Mangold every Sunday. Lets not forget to mention the Broncos went through like 5 running backs this season. 8-8 doesn't seem so bad for a one trick pony in Denver. Especially since it's the kid's 2nd season as a starter!
Yes, I've watched him play. He's got a cannon, but scouts knew about his gunslinger mentality before the draft. At Vandy, he was never put in a situation where he could win. With Denver, he has plenty of weapons, especially at wideout. I mentioned the lack of a running game, and that sucks. It still doesn't change the fact that he locked on the Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall in the last stretch of the season - forcing balls and getting intercepted...in close games.
I watched nearly every Bronco game the past two or so seasons. Cutler has a bit of gunslinger in him, but he is going to be a very successful QB for a long time. He was forcing balls to Marshall and Royal b/c he had no one else that could make a play. The RBs were terrible out of the backfield, Nate Jackson was out for the season, Sheffler and Stokley were banged up. And Graham got a few more balls down the stretch. Cutler went out on every offensive possession last season feeling like he had to score due to their atrocious defense. Add on top of that the complete lack of any running game (save for two games with P.Hillis) and I think the Broncos are lucky they got to 8-8 with Cutler being the main reason they even performed that well. Sure he forced some balls, but that was a combination of thinking he can make any throw (see the end of the Bills game) and the need to put up points every time.
I'm not calling Jay Cutler a bust - I just want to know why people think he's such a stud. I know how banged up the Broncos were last season, but Cutler still needs to be smarter with the football. If this 2008 season gets to Cutler's head, he's going to nowhere but down. Before he had Randy Moss, Tom Brady was a great passer - he had a bunch of smurf, mediocre-at-best wideouts playing with him in New England...He rarely forces a throw and he's smart with the football. Cutler can't keep locking onto his receivers. I don't care how good they are. That trait alone will kill his career.
I mentioned it on an earlier thread - i think it was "What do you think of Josh Freeman?" thread. I see Steve Clarkson from the Debartolo Sports University several times a day and about two weeks ago, I asked him who the best QB in the draft was. Josh Freeman was the answer. This is a guy who taught Ben Roethlisberger (and Matt Leinart, J. P. Losman) so he knows his stuff. And USC is LA's nfl team out here, and he still likes Freeman over Sanchez. Freeman should be the goal of this year's draft.
Who else would he force throws too? He did utilize the tight ends as well. Graham and Scheffler did pretty well. I would still love for him to be our QB.
He reminds me of a young Culpepper( small school QB) even little McNair . The Flacco comparison is pretty good. Flacco played at Delaware in a shot gun O. Flacco appeared to be a more accurate passer, though. This will be a very interesting draft. I wonder if this kid has a brain, which is really the most important thing for a QB( see Vince Young, both Vicks, Ryan Leaf and Jeff George, Browning Nagle)
the kid is pretty good... he would fit right in on the jets i like his ability to roll out and pass the ball becuz 9 out of 10 times he will have to do that with the jets line....
What the hell are you talking about? The Jets' offensive line is much improved - it's not 2007 anymore. You probably based your entire post on that youtube video of Freeman throwing that deep pass on the run, huh? The guy's deep accuracy is very, very questionable. It's clear that you don't know much about college football. 1. Kansas State isn't a small school - they've just sucked since Snyder's been retired. UCF is a mid-major, but they spit out a good prospect every now and then: Kevin Smith in '08's draft. 2. Joe Flacco played in a shotgun oriented spread at I-AA Delaware, while Josh Freeman played in a non-shotgun oriented ace spread at K-State, which is in the Big 12. There are no similarities besides height and arm strength -- they are two completely different types of quarterback.
Very much improved Running wise Favres 22int's and 30 times being sacked says other wise.... So what the hell are you talking about..
