All of this so called "talk" has been taken out of context in relation to the questions that were asked Therefore none of it bothers me.
Geno's comment isn't cocky at all, IMO it doesn't even sound cocky. He said that he EXPECTS to be a top 5 qb in this league. He never said that he is top 5 or ever will be top 5. He's saying that he is putting everything he has into his craft and EXPECTS that to translate to a top QB.
The media plays he say/she say games. The players aren't walking around with microphones and digital recorders. The players for the most part don't want to talk to the media. However the media is into the game of selling perceptions. They give the impression as if the player hunted them down, trapped them in a corner, and screamed in their face. It's the exact opposite. The media wants to create a fan base that is emotionally charged, but hardly thinking beyond what they are told. I wish people were more aware on how they allow themselves to be pawns in someone else's game.
This is what I've been trying to say. If these players were scheduling their own press conferences and saying these things I'd have a problem. But that's not the case. The media is going to ask them LEADING questions until they get an answer they can write an article about. It's their job, it's what they do. Let's look at the Dee Milliner comment. He's asked who is the best CB in the league. My guess is he said "I am" because it can appear weak to name all these players who are better than you. Now, could he have said something like "Revis, but in a few years I plan to be the best." Of course he could have, and that probably would have been a better answer but he's a 22 year old kid, was probably caught off guard and didn't really have time to think of an answer.
Don't teams have media consultants in the locker rooms to make players more aware of how these things work? Particularly a franchise as PR savvy as the Jets? As anybody with a computer knows, once something is out on the net, its out there forever. Just like politicians, Pro Players in any sport always have to assume that the "mic is hot" and you always watch what you say to the press. Stop blaming the press for this. They don't set out in the morning to trap some poor innocent Jet player into saying something stupid.
How do the comments rex, milliner, pace, geno or any other jet player really hurt anybody? If we win it gives the team even more confidence because they backed up their talk. If we lose or the certain player underperforms at worst they look stupid. Teams want to beat us and rex ryan regardless if we talk shit or not. If I remember correctly our team did quite a lot of talking before we walked in NE and won our biggest playoff game in our team's history (minus sb III). The next week before playing the Steelers we took it down a notch, were all humble and .... came out fucking flat in the 1st half on that sunday.
http://bleacherreport.com/tb/ddAPX Article via Manish Mehta. 'Excerpts of Milliner's responses.' Mehta asks him who the best CB in the League is... “The best corner in the league? Me,” Milliner told the Daily News after practice on Saturday. “I ain’t gonna say that somebody else is better than me.” “I’m not going to say somebody that plays the same position is better than me,” Milliner said. “Don’t care if they’ve been in the league 10 years and I’ve been here five months. That’s how it’s going to go. I’m the best. I’m not going to say that another man that plays the same position… and say he’s better than me? I can’t do that.” “I want to be great,” Milliner said. “That’s the difference between the players that are in the Hall of Fame and not in the Hall of Fame…. You want to do great things. That’s what I want to do.” When asked to assess his first season in the NFL... “It wasn’t too good at the beginning of the season. So, that’s an ‘F’ right there,” Milliner said. “I give myself a B-plus how I finished. ... But it ain’t about the grades. It’s about what I can do each week. Whatever it takes for us to win the game, that’s what I need to do.” Leave it to Mehta to put him on the spot. Not thrilled with his response, but at least he elaborates that it's a matter of confidence and that he believes in himself.
11 weeks to the bye week. That's gonna be one hell of a campaign to show your the best. Better start making your dead pool stadium signs now. The 2014 N.Y. Jets Defense Dead Pool Matt Schaub Rodgers Cutler Stafford Rivers Manning Brady Manuel Smith Roethlisberger Tannehill Cassel (Ponder) Locker Cross them off one by one. It's just a harmless game right?
I'm not sure teams have media consultants in locker rooms or not. Whenever I see a player being interviewed it's usually the player by himself with about 15 microphones in his face. So I would say no? And the NY sports media will prod and poke until they get an answer they are looking for. It's their job to do it, it's how they earn a paycheck. If you don't know that, you don't know anything. And despite you thinking every 22 year old should be media savvy, the fact is they are not. He's just a kid, not a PR person. I don't know, I guess I can just see things from other people's perspective easily. I couldn't imagine having to deal with the NY media where anything you say can be twisted out of contetext.
I have never heard of any effort on the part of the team to tamp down on smack predictions. Therefore I don't know why i would think they have a problem with players who do that.
You cannot possibly just blame this on the NY media. We've seen a heavy dose of this talk since Rex arrived. The players obviously get it from him.
