Why? What's the harm in a playet saying he thinks his team will have the best defense in the league?

It has nothing to do with a personal affront. It has everything to do with the way your franchise is perceived and what the team has NOT done on the field. They talk and don't back it up. It's stale.

It's like some guy saying that he has the strongest arm in the league and he's not even in the top 10 based off prior years. It's all conjecture and based on nothing of substance.

I would love it if Pace responded "I think we'll be the best in the league". That's not what he said. He said WE ARE THE BEST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE ROOOOOOOOOOOOAR JULY BEAST MODE HEAR ME ROAAAAAAAAAAAAR

Why care about how other football fans perceive us? Most still think Rex is a fat idiot who can't coach.

I recall them talking a lot of shit about other teams, and they backed it up and won games. They don't talk and don't win many. Now they talk about improving themselves and believing they are good, and you're losing your mind.

Ok let's not act like the Jets are this humble group of little sisters of the poor who are just fighting to get some respect. If that was the case then I'd be all for the boasts and claims and support everything they're saying. Yet, they bring all of this completely on themselves. All I'm saying is that they better back it up this year or else there needs to be accountability and changes at the top. Actions speak much louder.

When you're in the playoffs and advancing, yes you can chirp more than when you're playing to get to .500.

That argument might have some merit if Seattle hadn't just dominated the SB while the Jets sat home for the 3rd year in a row.

Seattle is stupid and pathetic for all their chirping before and after winning the SB but at least they backed it up. This is year 6 of Rex Ryan & Crew's nonstop talking and we don't even have a division title to show for it.

That's not what he said, but it's interesting that you interpreted it that way.

ok, so we will wait to se if the Jets win a SB then we can go back in time and say it was ok for them to talk. Got it.

we did better than a div title the first 2 years, we made title games and have chances to reach SBs.

but they had only won 1 playoff game going into last season.

Interesting comments here pro and con.

On the negative side, I get the argument that talking doesn't accomplish anything, and might make the Jets more of a target. I am not so sure about the target thing, though. Opponents get up to play who they are playing on Sunday no matter who they are playing, or what they said.

And on the plus side I can see positive comments as good for morale. But only up to a point. I just dont see that the talk helps much.

There's also the aspect that I find more troubling, which is what happens if the Jets do not play up to these expectations? I think it might tend to make some more doubtful about their CS, and HC in particular.

It is true that the players always say they love Rex, year after year. Yet Rex has also lost the pulse of the locker room a couple of times. Is this bit of not living up the smack talk part of the problem?

What is embarrassing is the Seahawks don't even talk this way and they really are the best. Well, maybe Richard Sherman does. Haha. Rex and the Jets have missed the playoffs 3 straight years, yet an 8-8 finish has brought all kinds of Swag back? Makes no sense. Walk the walk before you talk the talk.

It is a mental game Rex plays with his players. The Jets are just in NY so it gets blown out of proportion. You have to believe as a player team unit that you are and can be the best but to do so we need to work hard. Right or wrong this is how Rex motivates his team.

There is a difference in being confident and cocky. The Jets come off as cocky. Calvin Pace should know that the defense is going to be one of the best in the NFL, Dee Milliner should think he is the best CB in the NFL, Geno Smith should want to be a Top 5 QB in the NFL, Rex should feel this is the best roster he has had as Jets coach, but he doesn't have to say it out loud. Just comes off wrong to me. Puts unnecessary pressure on the whole team.

When you read the quotes in context, you realize nobody is saying anything terribly outlandish

+ a billion. Why do so many fans want our players to regurgitate useless non-answers like the Cheatriots? It boggles my mind. I would much rather them speak their mind, be confident that they are the best and then use that as motivation to go prove it. I don't want to hear crap like "it's a process, we are just working to improve a little each day, and right now our focus is to be ready for the first pre-season game". Screw that.
