of all the things he said you pick this one to show as your this guy needs to be banned because of quote? i dont think they ban people at tgg because they dont agree with you. i cant see any issue with this post other than he is telling people to take it easy as there have been plenty of wrs that came out and were supposed to be the next big thing and turned out to be hot garbage.
He didn't say that. He said that a lack of one or both of those major factors were a reason for those players failures. If you have elite athleticism and work ethic, it doesn't mean you'll definitely be a star, but it certainly helps. And if you lack one or both, you're facing an uphill climb.
What, besides having elite athletic ability and the desire to be great/love for football, would you say makes a quality receiver? Sure you could nit pick and say they need to be good route runners and have good hands and intelligent enough to understand the game... But pretty much, each one of those can be thrown into athleticism or work ethic. Name one thing that will hold Hill back as a WR?
I did not imply anything. I was simply responding to what Bills Over Jets wrote. He was wrong in what he wrote.
Route running, good hands, and intelligence is not nit-picking. Those are very important qualities receivers need to have to be consistently successful. You can also add beating press coverage, going in and out of your breaks with explosiveness, reading a defense, creating separation (different than straight-line speed) and a whole bunch of other stuff to that list. There are plenty of guys who can run fast that didn't have what it takes to play in the NFL. I'm not saying Hill is destined to become one of them, I don't have a clue, but you're kidding yourself if you think athleticism and work ethic is all it takes to make it.
More so breaking down each category further rather than nit-picking... Route running comes from practice and a good amount of natural ability, beating press coverage is the same thing, reading a defense is done after hours in the film room... Point I was making was that all of these can be in some way brought back to the need to succeed/love of the game and athletic ability. Arguably, good hands are the only criteria that could be separate, but then again it can be tied back to natural ability that can further be developed through practice. Hill is a raw prospect, but he has many to all of the tools that it takes to succeed, and those that arent yet developed, he has the drive to get better. And like Cakes said, if a guy does not have both (your example of just guys that can run fast), then they are not likely to succeed. Hill does not fall into that category.
Look at his post history and get back to me. This isn't nearly his worst, but it's just the icing on the cake.
If I were a Jets fan would you have been calling for me to get banned? Nope. The content of what I said isn't what pissed you off. Its that a Bills fan said it.
He has a good chance of being one... But after reading some of the stuff here, my problem is that this guy is still RAW. From this thread, you could see that the fan's expectations of him are to be an absolute beast his rookie year... Everyone should fully understand and grasp that this kid caught less than 60 passes all throughout college, and although he has all of the athleticism and determination to be great, he is going to take some time to develop into that receiver everyone is expecting him to be.
He actually caught 49 passes in his career. That should tell people how raw he is. He has unlimited potential, but he needs to some serious time to get himself ready to compete consistently at the NFL level. It's a big reason why I want us to bring in Braylon for the year. He will allow Hill to develop at his own pace, and still give us a consistent #2 threat. Yet his presence doesn't eliminate Hill's ability to get on the field and make the big play from time to time.
Don't know that it will take that long. After college and prior to the draft, he spent a lot of time learning/practicing the NFL route tree at some training facility or another and was catching passes from Vinny Testaverde. Based on tweet reports coming out of rookie camp, he was looking very good in his routes. Next up will be TC and other OTAs, so I'm willing to be that he'll be ready come the beginning of the season. Granted, all of the above take a back seat to real game time experience, but I think he'll be fine and will make a good contribution on the field this year.
Yeah I was too lazy to look up the actual number, I figured I throw myself some breathing room before I say he caught less than 50 passes and he actual caught 55, because then you would have some smart ass try and correct you... haha But 49 passes just shows that he is raw. I have no doubt that he will contribute right away. He should progress a lot, but the expectations in this thread arent made with him still being somewhat of a raw talent in mind. He could very well put up 800 yard and 8 TDs, but lets not dub this kid the next Megatron and expect him to be just that. Also, I would personally like to see him put on some weight because he looks lanky, and some muscle could help him withstand some of the beating he’ll be taking in the NFL.
My point is, there are people who have spent a lot of time working on route running, or sitting in the film room understanding different coverages, but still ended up failing to become a quality receiver. Some players are just flat out not good enough, even if they do have elite athleticism and a great work ethic. Can anyone here really speak to the amount of work put in by guys like Heyward-Bey, or David Terrel, or any number of other guys who didn't pan out? I want to reiterate, I'm NOT saying that Hill is gonna be a bust, because I don't know what's gonna happen. But as it stands right now, all we know about the guy is that he can run in a straight line very fast, and he's pretty good at catching the ball. He has no experience doing anything other than running go-routes, and he's gonna need to improve in a lot of areas before he can make a significant impact. Can he do it? Yup. Does his "great work ethic" guarantee he won't be a bust? Nope.
I don't think anyone expects him to come out and be the next Megatron, but I expect him to immediately add a new dimension to our offense.
Megatron had a pedestrian first season of 48-756-4 as a #2 WR to Roy Williams. But that was also Stafford's first year. In our offense I would be pretty happy for Hill to have 30-600-6 this year. Just enough to keep the safeties aware of him and to open up the field for others.
