Mr. Keels may have had Leon's best interests at heart, but he showed exactly why he was totally incompetent to represent him or anybody else with a finite lifespan in a high-risk occupation like the NFL. I too would be upset if my neighbor's house was sold for $500,000 and mine was the same and my agent told me he could only get me $300,000. But if the neighborhood was about to be a war zone that could render the real estate practically worthless (think: career-ending injury) OR if I desperately needed $300,000 and nothing less, I would NOT risk holding out when I risk getting even less as the market clear. If this isn't clear, Mr. Keels, try Googling "Subprime Housing Bubble." Mr. Keel's wasn't offered $300,000 for a $500,000 home...he was offered $450,000 and decided to hold out. The market has changed -- both for healthy players and certainly for one coming off a serious injury like Leon -- and rather than admit his mistake he's calling some of us racist. Like people who hold stocks to the end, not willing to miss out on that last 5% or so, and they are the ones who invariably get caught holding the bag riding the market down 30-50% or more.
Mr. Keels is right on one point: he works for Leon Washington. Ultimately, it was up to Leon to say YES or NO to MT's offer. My questions for Mr. Keels would be: what was your professional advice? What was your opinion ? Did you say, "We could get a few bucks more if everything breaks right, but we're taking a big risk not signing....I'd take the money right now" ? Or did he say "This contract is an insult...an absolute insult...we can easily get 20% more money next year, no doubt, and if things go right maybe another 50% or more." Which is it, Mr. Keels ?
