First off, formating, it CAN work for you! I think you are taking an inaccurate view of the agent-player relationship. Technically the player does work for the agent, but it's not as simple as that. In order for the agent to do their job, they are going to ask their client to do as they tell them. I work as a loan officer and even though I technically do work for my applicants, they end up doing what I tell them to do far more often than I take my cues from them. This is because, in this situation, I am the specialist. If people were capable of providing their own financing I wouldn't be required, but they can't do my job and, thus, my services are needed. Apply this to football. Most players lack both the wherewithal and desire to negotiate their own contracts. Hence they hire a specialist, agent, to do it for them. Technically this specialist works for them, but they frequently defer to this specialist's expertise. If the team offers X amount of dollars and the agent thinks they will offer more if his client refuses that deal, the player is going to listen. Agents aren't some pure as undriven snow victim of this situation, they are very often the driving force behind holdouts and contract issues. And yes, it isn't Keels job to be a parent to his clients, you're right about that. HOWEVER, his track indicates that either he gravitates toward troublesome cases or even somehow negatively impacts their behavior. The proof is in the pudding, and his ain't exactly a delicious Jello Pudding Pop. And I do hate that Keels is black and successful because it inspires ignorant, paranoid, straw-man, and racist (yes, racist) statements like the one you choose to close your post with. Nicely done...Mr. Keels.
I agree that Leon is a dangerous weapon, but I'm just throwing that out there for comparison's sake. Jacobs has been a starter for two season and, in doing so, has allowed the Giants to accurately gauge his abilities. Jacobs has shown that he can take over a game and exert his will upon a defense in a manner that is most unpleasant for them. Jacobs has established himself as a leader in the locker room and off the field. Jacobs' absence from the field has a very notable and very negative impact on the offense as a whole; he sets the table for the rest of that unit. These things can't be said about Leon (though I will concede I know little of his locker room standings and leadership qualities). I know it isn't Leon's fault that this is the case, but can you blame the Jets for having some misgivings about backing up the dump truck for him in light of all these things?
A million/year difference from what they're offering now (and the current offer is backloaded from what I understand) is not backing up the dump truck. Let's use Brandon Marshall as an example... Marshall's getting paid 2.2 million a year... feels he's worth more, so went to practice, walked during sprints, batted down passes, punted the football, acted like a menace, and spoke poorly of his organization every chance he got... the reason he did this is because Denver didn't immediately cave to his demands. On the other hand, Leon let the team know clearly he needs to get paid (he's getting about 550k now)... but showed up for training camp, played his ass off, and is looking great going into the season. The guy has been absolutely nothing short of a class act since he's been with the Jets. However, when you consider that players are paid to play football... let's look at Leon's impact on the Jets last year... 9 total touchdowns, 2,337 yards... and this is a guy who only got on the field around 200 times or so. The guy is a weapon, and he's durable to boot. He's going to be the starter for the Jets next year when Jones is gone, and this year his load is going to be upped considerably. He's well worth it.
I was using the dump truck analogy only to accentuate a point. Though if you look at other RBs salaries I think you'll find 6 a year is QUITE comparable. I don't want to start a "let's compare Leon to other players around the league" trend because then we'll easily hit 1000 pages before deciding anything (and probably not even then). The point I was trying to make in comparing Leon with Jacobs is that in Jacobs you have a player who has proven more by virtue of his playing time and he is still receiving only slightly over 6 a year (on average, I don't want to get into the particulars of how each contract is done or we'll be here forever). Leon may very well be "the guy" for the Jets in the next 3 seasons and put up amazing numbers. But he hasn't done that as of yet, and this should give the Jets FO pause. Leon's value as a KR may not be what it once was due to the rule changes, and this may give the Jets FO pause. Leon is a class-act and no one can argue against him being a weapon on the field. However, and your post itself shows this when you say "he was only on the field 200 times or so," Leon also has never been asked to carry a large percentage of the load. This being the case, we don't know about his durability. Remember that injuries were a concern about him coming out of college. If Leon were to have, say, 10 carries and 5 receptions a game (which I think he should as he is the most dynamic weapon on that offense) how would he hold up over a 16 game season? Even if he doesn't miss a game, is he still able to play the way the Jets want come playoff time? Numbers aside, the Giants were given a good sampling of what they have in Jacobs and made what they felt is an appropriate offer. The Jets can't say the same about Leon as his body of work, brilliant though it may be, is limited at this time.
i didn't take his argument seriously before that part of his post but that just added to ludicrousness of it. Some people on here fail to understand that first and foremost we, for the most part, are Jets fans and the only color that really matters it that on the uniform. Idiocy wears many different colors.
I had no idea while reading the article until I scrolled down and saw the picture. I was actually picturing a greasy Drew Rosenhaus type. Let's face it, black or white, these guys are all scumbags. Next question!
Who called anyone raciest..funny how defensive people get..and quick to say there not raciest when no one called them raciest..Pretty soon everyone is about to start posting the number of black friends they have...my best friend is black..my brother in law is black..blah..blah..my favorite palyer of all time is Curtis Martin..i voted for the president..i know i know..racism is dead in America..i get it. Only thing that sounds more suspect then that is those saying I didnt even know he was black and i read the article or the post..one the front page of the article and the top of the post there is damn near a life sized picture of the dude. ..lol.llol..how the hell can you miss it..its damn near bigger then the whole friggen post. Let me guess some of you are blind..but some how can read print and type you just cant see big a$$ color pictures. As for all the real estate agents.....Great example and i couldnt agree with you more..if my niegbor sold his house for 500,000 and my house was just as nice if not better no way in hell i would take 300,000. I would expect my agent to get me 500,000 or i would fire him and sign with the agent the people next door used..why the hell would i take less for my home..espically when my buyer has way more money...i know what market value is and i want that for my house..if my agent is going to try and tell me what a great deal 300 is for my home im going to fire him. I didnt hire him to get me less then my house is worth..i can do that on my own...but he good luck being a real estate agent make sure you let all your clients know you specialize in getting them less then there home is worth. Im sure the clients will come pouring in when they hear that
^ We really need to get your keyboard an Enter key, Alvin. BTW, feel free to call me raciest any time you like. I think I've earned it with some of my threads. Raciest poster on the board. So damn racy.
See, Alvin, here's where you started backpedaling and could have rescued some of your pathetic and half-legible nonsense that you've posted here so far... and then you follow it up with: Pretty much calling people racist out the side or your mouth. Or keyboard, as it were. I didn't even read the rest of your post because I'm pretty sure it's worthless, like your existence on this board. You could have defended your argument about the role of a sports agent, but instead you continue to call people racist. You're the pea-brained racist in this equation, my little friend. And you're failing with wild colors here. By the way, I'm white and I have a bigger dick than you.
Learn how to format your posts in a readable format, then people will listen. It is like looking at a jumbled mess. I get annoyed with those that are quick to point out race, such as you made the effort to do so.
I'm reading between the lines of this post (which is damn near fucking impossible because you won't use the enter key) and I've gleamed (which is what the gold fillings in your entirely too white teeth dos in the sunlight) that not only have you deemed the enter key racist, but you've also decided the rules of punctuation are racist...oh, and logic. Apparently logic is racist too.
Ah but you see, if no one is going to offer you more then 300$ you're stuck with not selling the house. Market value isn't how much YOU think something in your possesion is worth... it's how POTENTIAL BUYERS feel your assets are worth. If you think your house is as nice as your neighbours but the buyers don't well then you can either sell it for less or not sell it... either way you cannot force the market to do something just because you think it's right. As for the first part of your answer let me make a summary: If you think an agent is an asshole and the agent is white then you might be right... If you think an agent is an asshole and the agent is black then you might be racist... Mmm... I wonder if anyone can see where the logic doesn't sum up... All in all I don't blame Leon for choosing Keels and I don't blame Keels for doing it's job. But from a fan standpoint I want what's best for the team (signing a fair deal, and 5 mill a season is) and not what's best for the agent (making as much money as possible). This is why I tend to be supicious of agents.. their goal is different then the fans goal.
No wonder why Leon hasn't signed yet. His agent can't even type in proper english how the hell do we expect him to read and understand a contract?
You know it is pretty much trolling here. Guy makes an obvious reference to skin color, and sits back and watches the fireworks as people rightfully bash him for it.
Exactly.. I made a simple example to explain the situation... all the added complexities, deriving from the "house" being an NFL player and the "buyers" being the NFL teams, favor the Jets leverage in this situation.
