I never said he wasn't, but he took the 1997 summer camp by surprise for being a late third round pick from a small midwestern school.
Yes in 1978 Robinson was thrust into the starting role when Todd broke his collarbone in week 4. About midway through the season he led the Jets to a huge comeback win in Denver against the reigning AFC champs - their biggest comeback in history up until the Monday night miracle. Then in 1979 he beat Todd out in training camp for the starting job but sprained his thumb wrestling with Joe Klecko at a bar a couple of nights before the opening game against the Browns. He and the Jets trainer hid the injury from Walt Michaels and managed to get the swelling down but not without a tight tape job. So Sunday morning they confessed to Michaels. They went on the field pre game and demonstrated that Robinson could throw fine (probably saving Michaels from a stroke lol) so he started the game. It was a tough game but the Jets took the lead with a little over a minute left. Robinson - who was in pain despite the tape job - tore off the bandage thinking the game was over. The Browns connected on a Hail Mary with 7 seconds left allowing them to kick a long game tying FG. Meanwhile his thumb began to swell again. In OT his throws were all over the place and the Jets couldn’t get a decent drive together. With a minute left in OT Robinson attempted a long pass to Wesley Walker which came out as a wounded duck and was intercepted and run back into FG range. The Jets lost. That was the last game Robinson ever appeared in for the Jets.....
