But thats not true at all. We did not give up a first for Jolley. We received several other picks in the deal as well as him. The details are the details. if you want to discuss something, it helps to have them right.
You don't give up on a franchise QB for a 1 year wonder no matter what your relationship is w/ a player. The reason denver was supposedly such an attractive job opening was b/c of Cutler. There's more to it than just having worked w/ Cassell. Hypothetically lets say he got the Saints job, you think he's trading Brees to bring in Cassell?
Cutler is a crybaby. He and his agent are using this situation to get him more $$$$$. When Denver needed a win last year he shit the bed in his last 4 games. I'd take a chance with the quarterbacks presently on the team.
To me, I clearly believe that McDaniel's should be fired. He gambled that either a) He could pull the trade off. b) that cutler wouldn't find out about it if he failed. He lost. You want to talk about someone who has shown nothing, its McDaniels. He's just another coordinator plucked from the NE tree. To me, the fact that he was taking over the 2nd rated offense from last year and felt so strongly that he needed his own guy, just shows how he has NO confidence in his ability as a head coach. That team would be FAR better off without McDaniels than without Cutler. Period.
Cutler either isn't happy with his new coach. Or that, he wants a new contract. Which hasn't seemingly been the case, at all.
We won Week 15, where did it get us? Denver folded like a tent just like we did. If Denver were the Jets half the board would want to run Cutler out of town already, especially they way he's crying now.
He said they lost the last 4 weeks. I was correcting him. Again, they gave up 112 points in the last 3 weeks including 30 points to Buffalo at home.
That's fine. I'm not pinning it all on Cutler, it's a team effort. But we've heard this nonsense for years now about a QB "stepping up" and "carrying a team", all while discussing Chad, now suddenly Cutler too is a victim of not having a good enough team around him. It's a double standard. So what's to say he's going to carry us any further than who we've had here, whether it's Chad, an aging Favre or Clemens? Cutler was on a team with a top notch coach, took over the job at 7-4 and playoff position in 2006, had it there for the taking this past season and never got there. He's young and has a great arm, so is Brett Ratliff. One you have to give up the farm for, one you don't, neither has proven he can carry a team to even the first round of the playoffs--which we've established here isn't nearly good enough and why Chad had to go.
Yep. Sounds right to me. I'd be all over getting Cutler if the Broncos had actually achieved anything with him at QB. Instead they've kind of drifted during his tenure and they collapsed last year at the end. Defenses that think they have a chance to win at the end tend to suck it up and at least play passably. Defenses that think they're going to lose anyway tend to collapse. It just is what it is.
I don't get the idea that McDaniels should be fired before he is ever given a chance to coach the team... and really, do you think it was McDaniels alone that signed off on the Cassel trade idea? Yes, he took a huge risk trying to go with a new QB over their 'franchise QB', but HCs have surmounted larger odds than this. I think the fact that the Donkos' FO and ownership signed off on trading him is proof enough that the organization is not completely in love with the guy. But they shot themselves in the foot and now they have to figures out how to stop the bleeding.
Cutler of 2008 would have taken the Jets of 2004 to at least the AFC Championship game IMO. Cutler has the tools to attack top defenses and isn't afraid to try and throw it into tight spots. I don't know why this has to go back to Chad though. It's about stepping up and being able to attack top defenses when the game is on the line. Look at the Broncos 3rd down percentage, look at what Cutler did in the 4th quarter. I don't think that team would have won more than 6 games with Pennington. The current Jets have a solid o-line, running game and a defense that looks very good on paper. Put Cutler on that team and I guarantee you playoffs with the potential to beat anyone. Maybe you guys are right, what do I know, I wanted Favre last year.
I never suggested, nor hinted that McDaniel's tried to make this trade by himself. However, the Broncos are clearly on the cusp of the playoffs. The offense CLEARLY was not the problem. They had addressed quite a few holes on the defensive side of the ball already this offseason including hiring Nolan. They should have been a MUCH more balanced team at that point and ready to make a run at the playoffs. My only assumption I make is that I believe that McDaniels was the prime reason they made a play at Cassell. Well guess what, he failed miserably. Again, my MAIN POINT is that the Broncos would be better off with only Cutler, than only McDaniels.
Shanahan traded up to get Cutler. The Bucs did everything they could to trade for him three weeks ago. Granted Gruden isn't there anymore but I am sure they learned from him the importance of a QB. Shanahan and Gruden know a wee bit more about QBs then everybody on this site combined. I can't see how he can hurt the Jets. The only QB I can think of who threw for more yards than Cutler in his second starting year was Marino when he set the all time single season record. Not bad company, yet all this hate.
Courtesy of The Big Lead comment section: (for reference 18 teams gave up 22 ppg or fewer last season)
The defense had a lot to do with the Broncos falling short of making the playoffs. It's not all on Cutler. Saying that you would take a chance with guys like Ratliff and Clemens over Cutler sounds good in March. But what if these guys are not the answer? Then we are going to be in the same situation next year looking to draft a QB. I have no problem seeing what these guys can do but if there is a better option out there like Cutler and the Jets can get him then they have to go for it. Cutler IMO would be to good to pass up on. In the end I dont see Cutler coming here and im not against giving Ratliff or Clemens a shot but the Jets should look into trading for Cutler if the Broncos start taking offers.
Only because Chad's who we had for a long time and that's the discussion that's been going on here for years as to why he wasn't good enough. You've got a huge "what-if" going there, too, regarding 2004. Are we talking about Cutler with a torn rotator cuff or comparing a healthy Cutler to an injured Chad? Pittsburgh was a 15-1 team playing at home, it's hard to assume anyone would have just beaten them, especially a guy who didn't exactly rescue his team in the regular season when they needed him and has never been to a playoff game, let alone won one. A lot of people didn't figure a Miami team coming off of 1-15, with a rookie coach and bringing Pennington in late in camp would have won 6 games either, and look what happened. That's why it's hard to make such assumptions. The grass is always greener on the other side. I think Cutler is clearly better than who we have, but at what cost? And do we really know who we have? Plus, this whole situation really raises doubts about how he'd handle it here. It's not a Madden game, the QB of the New York Jets is a high wire job, he's going to be ridiculed on the back of the papers eventually no matter what he does, how is he going to handle that? How much do we give up to take that risk? Favre came relatively cheap and was a known quantity in dealing with the pressures and media, etc, Cutler is the opposite of that.
I don't buy into the whole thin-skin theory. Some players perhaps, but some players get pissed off and perform better when prodded. Cutler, I believe, falls into the latter category.
