If you truly believe that, then you are naive imo. Rex may not have liked a couple of the picks where his desires were ignored, but I'd be willing to bet that most of the picks have Rex's name all over them. No GM is going to continually ignore the offense and draft defensive players year after year after year. Even if not, Rex and his CS have done a sorry ass job of developing those young players. I'm not saying that Idzik is blameless. I want him fired as much as anyone else. It just sounds like you're trying to make more excuses for Rex, and as far as I'm concerned, there are none. He's the biggest culprit and should be fired in shame.
In fact we are largely speculating in year six just how much input Rex has had on the overall draft. I think here and there the tea leaves have come out to a sufficient extent to see Rex probably wanted this or that guy, and by default another guy may not have been his choice. And it's not just the draft - no way Ryan was on board for the diminution of Cb talent the last two years. To be clear and especially under Tanny I think Ryan had a lot of input. But you imply that Ryan has had a larger say on the roster than I think we can safely conclude. Especially under Iszik. Too many point to the 13 draft as continued influence of R yan, for example. Having traded Revis the Jets had little choice but to go Cb in the first round. After Milliner was picked, Richardson probably was BPA at his slot. Was Ryan on board with that? No doubt. Would the results have been much different if Ryan were not there? Probably not, not on those two.
Rex will not be here. Your premise that the g.m. should ignore the h.c. and scouting dept is impractical at best. With the draft and any big decision there should be convesation and exchanges of ideas. We don't need a g.m. who tunes out everyone and everything. Its a terrible way to run any organization
Perhaps "ignore" wasn't the right word. I do think he should allow the HC and CS to have some input, but unlike how it's been with Rex here, I think the GM should make his own decisions regarding who to select in the draft, and not just follow what the HC wants. Personnel ss the GM's job, not the HC's job. The HC and CS are charged with developing the players they get, and coming up with the right schemes and game plans. IMO it is blatantly obvious that both Tanny and Idzik pretty much followed what Rex wanted with quite a number of the picks. If the opinions of the new HC and GM coincide, great, but if not, the GM should go with what he thinks is best for the team and the hell with what the HC wants. If you can't agree with that, then we'll just have to agree to disagree, because I think a GM that allows the HC to influence him too much in the draft isn't competent to be a GM in the NFL.
A little funny tidbit, someone tweeted Woody that "he really needs to Fire Idzik because the roster is garbagio". And he favorited the tweet, but then later said it was inadvertent.
the single biggest problem this organization has is woody johnson. he is not a good owner, he is not a brilliant man, he does not know how to go about doing things to put this franchise at the top of the food chain. there are a number of different ways to run an organization, the way woody has run this one is not a good one. from the keep the coach fire the gm mess that we now have... now he has to decide on the gm without him ever having his own people in here. and as much as i am disappointed in idziks moves including his pretty much blatant fucking of rex ryan i cant blame him for putting himself in that position. the owner created this mess. and in all honesty if what i believe to be true, the gm undermining the coach actually did occur woody should have fired them ALL right there on the spot. middle of the season, middle of the week, going into a game. make a statement about what this team is. what this team stands for. ok im babbling. let me shut the fuck up
I have said over and over that the $20 million in unspent cap money was more Woody's doing than Idzik's. These guys have budget meetings . They know how much they can spend and will do so. IMHO, Woody didn't want to spend over a certain amount of cash. The last minute offer to DRC wasn't Idzik panicking, it was him requesting permission to pay more and Woddy not approving until it was too late.
Well, it looks like yesterday's dismantling of the Dolphins didn't change much. This thing will play itself out if not today, by the end of the week we all hope. Woody being the drama king he is, might drag this out but at least he saw yesterday's game not so much as a indicator of how good this team has been but instead, more like a last stand. I bumped this thread because I don't think there's been this many eyes on Woody since he was announced as the new owner. Just like Jet Fans everywhere, we're all hoping he gets this reboot right. He simply can't fck it up again. Here's looking at YOU Woody... Update: The axe has indeed fallen. There is regime change at One Jets Drive.
Really, really hoping that he doesn't fuck this one up, but history isn't exactly on side. I'm hoping for small victories, like Johnson hiring a well-rounded, experienced GM within the next week, and then allowing that GM to pick his own head coach. No more of this holdover "garbagio" that, IMO, doomed Idzik from the start.
