Bingo I was upset when I first heard that the Jets had traded back into the first round for a tight end. I didn't know much about the guy. haven't seen a lot of Pur football, but after watching several you tubes of the guy, I am convinced he will not be lined up as a TE. He just might be the best receiver in the draft. In MT's defense, it's not like he is lying, I'm sure somewhere during the season he will be lined up as a traditional TE, but 90% of the time he will be an H-Back, and from the look of it, a very good one
3 years in the league..thats my criteria. How many rookies made the probowl last year. This regime has had two drafts that have been on the field so far. I have no idea how anyone could HONESTLY debate how well those drafts were unless half of them are out of football. I have no idea how anyone could be critical of what this front office has done from a draft perspective. If anyone wants to tear it apart, the other side of the coin is that they have 3 very strong chances at getting pro bowl players this year in Revis, Harris, Mangold to name a few. Unless some do not like these players, this being critical of drafts this early is pretty amazing. Tear apart the coaching job? Im sure that could be done. The draft?
On Harris, no I don't think he played at a pro bowl level once he was inserted in the lineup. He had two great games and then people started accounting for him and he was a good player, nothing more. That's not to say he won't be a pro bowler at some point but not at this point and probably not next season, unless he steps up and starts dominating like he did for two games last season. Compared to Vilma he was very, very good in the 3-4, but he wouldn't be starting for the Pats until Bruschi sat down. As to Revis, yeah he looks good. Let's see how he plays with a pass rush to back him up. The Jets can trade up as much as they want too to cherry-pick players because they are not confident of their ability to find gems at the spots they are slotted. That will not catch them up to the Pats, all it will do is give them really nasty decisions to make in a few years when they MUST sign these guys to their second contracts because they have no quality depth on the roster to replace them. You think Revis and Harris aren't going to be looking to be the highest paid at their positions if they pan out and the Jets have no talent behind them on the roster because they keep trading up?
You have got to be fucking kidding me. I really can't believe you somehow managed to make even that sound negative. "He was good, but lets see how good he is when the team is better." Must be it. You and Don have really got this thing nailed down. We've come away with such shit players, and you guys are really the only shining lights in a dark, dumb, overly optimistic (homeristic) board. True. Most coaches build depth first when they have to replace almost every starter on the team...I'm telling you man you really should be writing for the Post or some other really good paper. More people need to see and hear this. Why the hell does any of us care about 4 and 5 years from now? There might not even be a cap in the future, so what're you crying about that now? Aren't you all about the NOW anyway? Or is it the past? Or is it just 2007?
I tip my hat to you trying to spin their performances into something less impressive, but we watched the games too, and I feel that i'm not the only one that strongly disagrees. I don't know what your looking for out of these players. What would be good enough for you that the FO should do? Help us out here.
What would be good enough would be that they follow the patterns that virtually all successful teams in NFL history have followed to achieve dominance: use the draft to take the best players available, trade down where possible and stickpile picks, WIN PLAYOFF GAMES as a direct result of that policy. Pittsburgh, New England, Dallas, Indianapolis, this is not freaking rocket science here, do what the good teams do. Don't confuse NFL football with rotisserie or Madden, because it's not. So far our FO is doing a great job of pretending that the point of the draft is to get a few good players. That's not the point of the draft. The point of the draft is to replenish your team over time and accumulate good players as part of that process. The Patriots had three opportunities to get David Harris last year and they traded one away to this season (Mayo) and took more appropriately valued players at the other two slots. That's how you set yourself up to potentially win a super bowl. Trading two picks to select Harris? Thats how you set your self up to go 4-12 because your offensive line and pass rush didn't get bolstered appropriately.
Brad, with all due respect, I do not get your logic. The Pats, with an aging linebacking crew, would die to have Harris..and wouldnt have needed Mayo. See, the problem I have with the real negative posters is that they throw in everyone else face, the Patriots and the Colts...both teams that would never, ever ever had ANY superbowl rings if it were not for their qb's. The Dallas you reference must be the Dallas of years ago? Because they have done nothing lately if superbowls is what its all about. Your Steeler arguement is solid...and thats really it. BB and Poli..waited almost two full days to get their qb that has delivered the only superbowls they would have ever won. If not for Brady...BB would still be standing there with his...ummm...camera? in his hand. I think this regime. MT AND EM, finally saw how you can take down a team with a great qb even if you only have a good/average one. Pass rush...studs on the line and stud linebackers. How can you argue that they have not gone after that. Will it succeed? No clue here...but that is the recipe for success. Show me the great running backs that have single handedly beaten any of those teams you mentioned. There are none.
Yes, they made the mistake last year of not taking care of important positions and they paid dearly, we know that. Building a team is a slow process, and they are going about it in a different philosophy- but it is working. The drafted starters are all above average players. Its not rocket science, or an exact science- and thats why its so fucking difficult, your analyzing humans which is one of the hardest things to do. Don't confuse it with reading the meter in the basement and writing down a check or an 'x'. You named 4 teams out of 32 who can do it consistently every year- thats 12.5 percent of the leage. So 87.5% of the league can't draft... which would make drafting a very hard thing to master, right? And the Jets are replenishing their team, they have get the starters first to win, and then they'll worry about depth. Having alot of depth with no true #1 starter is not how you win. Last year the talent was overrated, this year they learned from the mistake. How do the lines look now? I'd say they are pretty bolstered.
Having to learn on the job that NFL games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage and that your lines suck eggs is not a quality that successful NFL coaches and GMs have. Now we're going to pay for the "don't trade up for players because depth is key in an injury-filled business" lesson also?
Dude he knows better than you. Some rules you should use when judging teams: 1. The last season is always the best way to evaluate what will happen with the team the next season. See last years Browns, the '99 Colts, Bill Walsh's 49ers, Chuck Noll's Steelers, BB's Pats, and so on. 2. Once bad, always bad. 3. Any coach with one bad season after a very good coaching season is not worth his salt. 4. Trading up means they have no idea who to pick. That one makes real sense. 5. Great teams have ALWAYS traded down. Always. 6. Phrases like "slow process" and "they have a very obvious plan that they are executing" are excuses. 7. The only good players are Pro Bowl players and players on winning teams. See Kerry Rhodes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Roy Williams...Williams was on a 13-3 team and Rhodes wasn't...who can prove me wrong? Should I also remind you that Williams went to Pro Bowls while Rhodes never has? 8. Despite the fact that Br4w4y5ux seems to treat rebuilding like Madden, it's still mandatory that you remind the people telling you this isn't Madden that it's not Madden. Iunno anymore...but ROTFL at this guy trying to convince people that trading up for Harris was a BAD thing. See, what he realizes that us idiots don't is that Harris and Revis were drafted for 2007 alone...the team got worse...therefore it must have had something to do with them. In fact, theres a million ways I could rip that one line but it's not even worth it...I've done it a million times before.
Thats it in a nutshell. In less then 3 years, there is barely a carryover from the previous regime. If people stated when this started that this was a 3 to 4 year gameplan, you can be as critical as you like but this is the crucial year. This front office has gambled greatly and lets not be blind. They have spent a ton of draft picks and signed a bunch on hard hitting players without even looking at the glory positions on offense. That still could comeback to haunt them. We know that...but that has nothing to do with the gameplan YET.
Always build a good defense before you build a great offense. Well not always...but logically it's just more practical to build a D. They stop the opposing team from scoring, they can score, and they can't really turn the ball over like the offense can/will. Theres probably more reasons, but you get the point (I hope).
Will always agree with that philosophy...which can be very frustrating. Losing low scoring games. Great defenses beat great offenses almost always.
I only bring the best insight possible to the table. Heres another football tidbit you probably didn't know, unlike me and Br4dyw4y: 9. If a rookie or second year player is not already a consistent Pro Bowler, somethings REALLY wrong with him.
True, the only players worth drafting are the ones who make the hall of fame right out of rookie training camp.
Yea, I guess investing two first round picks on the O-line in thier first year was learning on the job. So they over values Clark's ability in season two. Whoops one mistake on the o-line. Really, how do you come up with this bullshit? Your amazing at it.
You're catching on fast. You might be ready to help me burn down the houses of the two idiots making our picks. Then Br4dw4y5ux can take his rightful place as GM and HC of the Jets.
Those teams don't always trade down and stockpile picks. On 4-20-02 the Patriots traded their 1st, 3rd, and 7th round choices to Washington. In return, New England received Washington's 1st round choice. The Patriots selected Daniel Graham at 21. The Redskins selected Patrick Ramsey at 32 and Greg Scott at 234. They traded the 3rd round choice to Baltimore.
